Effect of cord blood double collection method on cord blood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation-related indices and blood gas analysis.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood has been widely used in clinical transplantation. Blood gas analysis of umbilical cord blood is routinely used to evaluate neonatal asphyxia. This study aimed to evaluate an improved umbilical cord blood collection method that does not affect the results of umbilical cord blood gas analysis and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation-related indices. METHODS: Three hundred pregnant women were recruited between December 2019 and August 2022. In total, 270 umbilical cord blood samples were included and randomly divided into 3 groups. Group A was defined as the g

Study of Arterial Blood Gas Analysis in Moderate-to-Severe COVID-19 Patients.

Background The high prevalence of pneumonia and renal involvement in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) leads to frequent acid-base abnormalities in serious patients and affects prognosis. In this study, we aimed to assess the arterial blood gas (ABG) and acid-base patterns in COVID-19 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital. Methodology A retrospective observational study was conducted in a designated COVID-19 hospital involving 267 reverse transcription-polymerasechain reaction-positive COVID-19 patients. Demographic and laboratory data including ABG data within the first day after adm

Angiostrongylosis-related restrictive pneumopathy assessed by arterial blood gas analysis in a dog.

Pulmonary angiostrongylosis was diagnosed by the Baermann method and larval identification from faecal and bronchoalveolar lavage samples in a five-month- old male mongrel dog with dyspnoea and cough. Arterial blood gas analysis indicated arterial hypoxaemia and restrictive pneumopathy. In addition to the palliative treatment, fenbendazole was administered (50 mg/kg/24 h per os) for 14 days. The respiratory signs subsided within a short time clinically, but serial arterial blood gas analysis demonstrated an ongoing ventilation disorder. Repeated haematology, thoracic radiography, bronchoscopy

Laryngeal microsurgery under general anesthesia using small-bore endotracheal tubes: blood gas analysis.

This study reports variations observed under general anesthesia through small-bore endotracheal tubes in PO2, PCO2, HCO3, percentage saturation of O2, and pH levels in 39 patients who underwent laryngeal microsurgery lasting from 10 to 100 minutes. The tendency to an increase in PCO2 levels reached statistical significance only at the 100th minute but did not constitute a risk for patients as values remained within the limits of "permitted hypercapnia." PO2, percentage saturation of oxygen, and HCO3 levels did not vary significantly. pH values tended to fall (respiratory acidosis) in correlati

Unmasking hypoxemia: the role of standard PaO₂ in interpreting Arterial blood gas analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the assessment of acute respiratory failure (ARF), PaO2/FIO2 ratio is widely used, but may be misleading in the presence of hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia. The standard PaO2 (stPaO2), a theoretical value corrected for PaCO2, may improve clinical interpretation of gas exchange severity. METHODS: We conducted an online survey among Italian physicians using a case vignette of three hypothetical patients with identical PaO2 values but differing PaCO2 levels. Participants were asked to rank the severity of the cases based solely on arterial blood gas analysis (ABG). A second ro

[Continuous intravascular blood gas analysis. Clinical evaluation of a new fiber optic monitor].

Continuous monitoring of blood gases and pH could add substantially to patient safety. During the last decade, efforts have been made to develop continuous optochemical blood gas sensors. The initial evaluation of such fibreoptic-based systems showed major patient-interface problems [11]. We evaluated a new intra-arterial blood gas monitoring system (PB3300, Puritan-Bennett, Carlsbad CA) under routine clinical conditions. METHODS. After institutional review board approval and with written informed consent, 38 sensors were tested in 25 patients with acute respiratory failure (e.g., the acute re

Comparative analysis of hemoglobin, potassium, sodium, and glucose in arterial blood gas and venous blood of patients with COPD.

The study aims to assess the accuracy of the arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis in measuring hemoglobin, potassium, sodium, and glucose concentrations in comparison to standard venous blood analysis among patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). From January to March 2023, results of ABG analysis and simultaneous venous blood sampling among patients with COPD were retrospectively compared, without any intervention being applied between the two methods. The differences in hemoglobin, potassium, sodium, and glucose concentrations were assessed using a statistical soft

Peripheral venous and arterial blood gas analysis in adults: are they comparable? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Peripheral venous blood gas (PVBG) analysis is increasingly being used as a substitute for arterial blood sampling; however, comparability has not been clearly established. To determine if the pH, PCO2 and PO2 obtained from PVBG analysis is comparable with arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis. A search was conducted of electronic databases as well as hand-searching of journals and reference lists through December 2012 to identify studies comparing PVBG with ABG analysis in adult subjects. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and

Analysis of Metaldehyde in Animal Whole Blood and Serum by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Metaldehyde, a widely used molluscicide, is the third cause of intoxication by pesticides in domestic animals in Europe. Most mammalian species are susceptible, and its exposure may lead to death within a few hours. While metaldehyde intoxication diagnosis is in most cases presumptive, based on the symptomatology or from "postmortem" analysis, few analytical methods are currently available for live animals. The aim of this work was to describe a fast analytical method for the specific and quantitative determination of metaldehyde in animal whole blood and serum at concentrations of toxicologic

Value of arterial blood gas analysis in patients with acute dyspnea: an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic and prognostic value of arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA) parameters in unselected patients presenting with acute dyspnea to the Emergency Department (ED) is largely unknown. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of two different prospective studies to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic value of ABGA parameters in patients presenting to the ED with acute dyspnea. RESULTS: We enrolled 530 patients (median age 74 years). ABGA parameters were neither useful to distinguish between patients with pulmonary disorders and other causes of dyspnea nor to identi

A case of cyanide poisoning and the use of arterial blood gas analysis to direct therapy.

Cyanide poisoning is a difficult diagnosis for health care professionals. Existing reports clearly demonstrate that the initial diagnosis is often missed in surreptitious cases. The signs and symptoms can mimic numerous other disease processes. We report a case in which a suicidal patient ingested cyanide and was found unresponsive by 2 laboratory coworkers. The coworkers employed cardiopulmonary resuscitation with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The suicidal patient died shortly after arrival to the hospital, while the 2 coworkers who performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation presented with signs

[Comparison of blood gas analysis and skin oximetry in phlebopathic dermatitis of the lower limbs].

A cutaneous oximetry and blood gas analysis study was performed on the return system from the dorsal aspect of the foot and the vein at the third median of the leg in 65 phlebopathic patients, using the cubital vein as a control site. The series (25 men and 40 women) comprised 32 cases of non-ulcerative lesions. The statistical analysis of results from the dorsal aspect of the foot in patients with ulcers showed an inverse correlation between transcutaneous O2 diffusion and the blood levels of O2, which was probably associated to AVA hyperstomy. In the vein at the third median of the leg, in b
