Blood group antigens have been implicated as markers in oncogenesis; however, studies of blood group antigen expression in the prostate have yielded conflicting data. This study examined the expression of A, B, H, X, and Lewis antigens in 30 prostates removed for adenocarcinoma, by utilizing monoclonal antibodies, Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (for H type-2 chains), and the secretor status. An antibody found in the serum of a Japanese blood donor detects a new high-frequency red cell antigen named UMC. UMC is absent from Inab phenotype cells, weakly expressed on Dr(a-) cells, and destroyed by alpha-chymotrypsin but not trypsin treatment of red cells. UMC is, therefore, a Cromer-related antigen. Immunoblotting with anti-UMC showed that UMC antigen, in common with other Cromer-related antigens, is carried on a red cell surface glycoprotein with an apparent molecular weight of 70,000, which presumably is the complement regulatory protein decay-accelerating factor.

BACKGROUND: Knowing the prevalence of blood group antigens in a given population is important to prevent hemolytic reactions. The Duffy blood group system (FY) has two main antigens, Fya and Fyb. Antibodies binding these antigens can cause immediate/delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions as well as hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is a major risk factor for chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. Some findings show increased frequencies of these diseases in individuals with type O blood and in secretors (expressing Le(b) antigen), but other studies have not found any relationship between blood groups and this infection. The study of the association between the coat-color variants and the blood-group system D antigens in the populations of two related trotter breeds (Orlov Trotter and Russian Trotter) showed the presence of three associations between these characters in the Orlov Trotter breed. In the populations of Russian trotters, these associations were not detected. Possible reasons for the formation and maintenance of these associations and the role of the selection for coat color in the differentiation of breeds by the frequencies of some system D antigens are discussed.
