Using a novel assay termed prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) assay to determine prooxidant-antioxidant balance in umbilical cord blood of infants with meconium stained of amniotic fluid (MSAF). Passage of meconium in amniotic fluid is associated with increase of neonatal mortality and morbidity. This complication occurs in about 15% of infants and is more widespread in postterm neonates. Bartonella quintana was isolated from 34 BACTEC nonradiometric aerobic resin blood cultures for 10 adults. Nine patients were initially diagnosed by routine acridine orange staining of routine cultures that had been incubated for 8 days. All subcultures grew on chocolate agar within 3 to 12 days (median, 6 days). The PLUS 26 high-volume aerobic resin medium, combined with acridine orange stain and subculture, is an effective system for detection and isolation of B. quintana from blood.

Human pathologic specimens from eyes with several different disease processes were immunohistochemically stained with antisera directed against rat or human serum albumin. In 33 eyes with no known ocular disease and no pathologic abnormalities, positivity was seen in the choroid and within retinal vessels, but not within the retina, except in one case in which focal staining in an area of outer retina was noted. In eyes with a history of ocular disease and/or pathologic findings, extravascular albumin staining was seen in areas of the retina generally corresponding to pathologic abnormalities.

Certain changes in the morphological and tinctorial features of the panoptically stained blood-smears suggest the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathies in cases in which these are not even supposed. The mechanism of such alterations is discussed and emphasis is laid on the practical value of these findings in the detection of myeloma and other related syndromes in patients without clinical symptomatology or followed up for years for other diseases.

We describe an interesting historical case of a blood-stained letter received in 1993 by Slovenian HIV/AIDS Reference Laboratory.
