Indices of body fat distribution for assessment of lipodysthrophy in people living with HIV/AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and morphological changes associated with excessive abdominal fat, after the introduction of Antiretroviral Therapy, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in people living with HIV/AIDS(PLWHA). Accurate methods for body composition analysis are expensive and the use of anthropometric indices is an alternative. However the investigations about this subject in PLWHA are rare, making this research very important for clinical purpose and to advance scientific knowledge. The aim of this study is to correlate results of anthropometric indices of evaluation of body fat dis

Body fat distribution in relation to breast cancer in women participating in the DOM-project.

The association between body fat distribution and breast cancer risk was studied in 5923 pre- and 3568 post-menopausal women, participating in a breast cancer screening project (the DOM-project in Utrecht, the Netherlands). Cases were fifty six premenopausal women and thirty eight postmenopausal women with breast cancer detected at screening or afterwards. Controls were women participating in the breast cancer screening project without breast cancer. Waist- and hip circumferences, height and weight were measured at screening, before diagnosis of breast cancer. In postmenopausal women the estim

Insulin and androgen relationships with abdominal body fat distribution in women with and without hyperandrogenism.

This retrospective study was carried out to investigate, in a large group of hyperandrogenized women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and nonhyperandrogenized control women, the interrelationships between sex steroids and indices of body fat distribution. Moreover, we investigated the relationships between these parameters and insulin blood levels, since obese women with abdominal pattern of fat distribution (A-BFD), as well as those with PCOS (either obese and nonobese) are characterized by moderate to severe hyperinsulinemia. A sample of 100 women with PCOS and that of 138 women without

The influence of body fat content and distribution on bone mass in healthy Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported a close relationship between body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density (BMD). However, the effects of fat on bone mass remain controversial, particularly for fat tissue distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between regional fat percentage and BMD using a population-based database. METHODS: This study included participants who were referred to the Department of Radio Diagnosis for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan from January 2018 to December 2020. The relationships between BMI and regional fat percentage

Coronary Endothelial Dysfunction in People Living With HIV Is Related to Body Fat Distribution.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) are at increased risk of atherosclerotic disease. Abnormal adipose distribution is common in PLWH and may contribute to atherosclerosis. Because coronary artery endothelial function (CEF) is impaired in early atherosclerosis, predicts future cardiovascular events, and is reduced in PLWH, we investigated associations between body fat distribution and CEF in PLWH. SETTING: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: PLWH on stable ART underwent MRI to quantify CEF, measured as change in coronary cross-sectional area from rest to

Overview of Epidemiology and Contribution of Obesity and Body Fat Distribution to Cardiovascular Disease: An Update.

Obesity is recognized as a heterogeneous condition in which individuals with similar body mass index may have distinct metabolic and cardiovascular risk profiles. Susceptibility to obesity-related cardiometabolic complications is not solely mediated by overall body fat mass, but is largely dependent upon individual differences in regional body fat distribution and ability of subcutaneous adipose tissue to expand. The present review will discuss to what extent the individual variation in body fat distribution is one of the clinical key variables explaining the metabolic heterogeneity of obesity

Body fat distribution and risk factors for fibrosis in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Only a small proportion of alcoholic patients develop advanced liver disease, suggesting that factors other than alcohol intake may influence alcoholic liver disease (ALD) progression. We have shown that body mass index (BMI) is an independent risk factor for fibrosis in alcohol-induced liver disease and that adipose tissue inflammation is correlated with liver lesions in alcoholic patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether visceral adipose tissue, as assessed by abdominal height measurement, affected individual susceptibility to fibrosis in alcoholic patients. METHO

Mapping organ fat distribution and body composition: towards precision profiling of cardiometabolic disease risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adiposity exerts multisystem insults that influence multiple organs and physiological pathways. This underscores the need for a systems-level framework integrating key organ fat measurements to disentangle the heterogeneous pathways through which adiposity shapes differential cardiometabolic risk profiles. Such an approach could advance mechanistic understanding and enable more precise risk stratification. METHODS: In the UK Biobank, 24 935 participants without overt cardiac disease were studied. Six adiposity phenotypic groups were identified using unsupervised clusterin

Patterns of Superficial Midfacial Fat Volume Distribution Differ by Age and Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: The changes that occur to midfacial fat with increasing age and BMI are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine how superficial cheek fat volume and distribution are differentially predicted by changes in BMI versus age. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients with facial computed tomography scans. Superficial cheek fat volumes were measured, and multiple linear regression analysis was performed to model the relationships between cheek fat and corresponding sex, age, and BMI data. RESULTS: A total of 109 patients were included in ou

Plasma steroids, body composition, and fat distribution: effects of age, sex, and exercise training.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Plasma steroid hormone levels vary between men and women, but their associations with BMI and adiposity are controversial. Furthermore, little is known about the role of exercise programs on the relationship between steroid hormones and adiposity. This report evaluates these relationships for plasma levels of adrenal, gonadal, and conjugated steroids with body composition and fat distribution in sedentary men and women, aged 17-65 years, and their responses to an exercise program. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In the sedentary state, 270 men (29% Blacks) and 304 women (34% Blacks)

Body fat distribution and hemodynamic stress responses in premenopausal obese women: a preliminary study.

To examine the relationship between body fat distribution and hemodynamic stress responses, cardiovascular responses to a speech task and a forehead cold pressor task were evaluated with 24 premenopausal women classified a priori as either centrally or peripherally obese. Results showed that women with central adiposity exhibited greater stress-related increases in diastolic blood pressure and total peripheral resistance, whereas women with peripheral adiposity exhibited greater stress-related increases in cardiac output. Depression, self-consciousness, hostility, and mood scores did not expla

Drugs Affecting Body Weight, Body Fat Distribution, and Metabolic Function-Mechanisms and Possible Therapeutic or Preventive Measures: an Update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Weight gain and body fat redistribution are common side effects of many widely used drugs. We summarize recent literature on prevalence data and mechanisms associated with drug-induced body fat changes and mechanisms to prevent or treat metabolic side effects. RECENT FINDINGS: The highest prevalence of metabolic complications is seen with antipsychotics and antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV and may, at least partly, be responsible for the increased risk for co-morbid diseases such as diabetes, steatosis of the liver, and cardiovascular disease. The pathogene
