Use of Panoramic Radiography in the Identification of Human Remains - Significance in Forensic Medical Practice.

Genetic testing, although regarded as the gold standard in the identification of human remains of unknown identity, is subject to significant limitations resulting from the degradation of biological material and the absence of comparative reference samples. This paper presents the case of an unidentified male (NN) whose body exhibited extensive mechanical trauma and advanced thermal alterations. The severity of soft‑tissue destruction precluded visual identification, while the lack of reference material rendered DNA analysis impossible. The key diagnostic tool in this case was a comparative as

CRISP: Cremated remains inference of sex probabilities - A software for Bayesian sex estimation in human cremated remains.

Sex assessment in cremation contexts represents a key step for reconstructing funerary rituals and demographic profiles. However, the high degree of fragmentation and thermal alteration of skeletal elements significantly hampers this operation. Most often, the morphological traits of pelvis and skull are not preserved while the application of metric criteria follows those developed from modern reference series. We used a prehistoric Italian sample (n = 155) with gender specific grave goods as a proxy for sex and developed binary logistic regression and Bayesian models based on 21 postcranial m

Forensic Anthropology in the identification of human remains found at sea: History of two judicial cases connected by the same marine context of discovery.

BACKGROUND: Calculating the immersion time at sea of human skeletal remains is a challenge for forensic investigations and the answer to this question would solve many court cases in the shortest possible time. Remains in water create profound structural changes due to countless variables that lead to difficulties in interpretation during investigations. CASE REPORT: In this paper, two forensic cases found at sea were analysed, Case A, an extensively skeletonised corpse, and Case B, an isolated, intact foot with soft tissue, both found only 9 km away from the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Sou

A literature review on current practices, knowledge, and viewpoints on pentobarbital euthanasia performed by veterinarians and animal remains disposal in the United States.

Sodium pentobarbital and pentobarbital combination products are commonly used by veterinarians throughout the US for euthanasia of their animal patients. The AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2020 Edition lists barbiturate acid derivatives (pentobarbital) and pentobarbital combination products as an acceptable method of euthanasia for all species when circumstances permit their use. When using pentobarbital products, a veterinarian must consider appropriate handling and disposal of animal remains to avoid the potential for environmental contamination, relay toxicosis in wildlife o

Unusual concentration of tramadol detected in cadaver in the last stage of decomposition and in fly larvae in the immediate vicinity: case report and literature review.

Determination of the manner and cause of death from skeletal remains is almost always very difficult and can be a challenge for medical examiners. At the end also on skeletal remains, it is possible to assess mechanical, chemical, and thermal injuries, although it can be usually impossible. Possibilities to analyze biological material for the presence of drugs are also limited. The present study describes a case of a homeless man's skeletal remains on which a large number of fly larvae were found. Unusually high concentration of tramadol (TML) in the bone marrow (BM) = 4530 ng/g, muscle (M) =

Thoracolumbar transitional vertebrae: Quantitative differentiation and associated numeric variation in the vertebral column using skeletal remains.

Transitional vertebrae at the thoracolumbar region are called thoracolumbar transitional vertebrae (TLTV) and retain physical features from the thoracic and lumbar regions. Since TLTV were first classified 40 years ago, there has been much discrepancy regarding its features, identification and clinical relevance. Vertebral body levels are used in the medical field as a frame of reference to locate specific organs, vessels, nerves or landmarks. Any numeric variation or deviation in the vertebral column may lead to clinical errors. Previous findings have suggested a high association between nume

Ankylosing spondylitis on unidentified individual from early modern times found in reformed church (Silická Brezová, Slovakia): a case-based review.

The grave situated in the central part of the reformed church in Silická Brezová in Slovakia contained the human skeletal remains of one individual. The aim of this study was to confirm the presence of ankylosing spondylitis on these skeletal remains. Determine the sex, age at death, stature, and ancestry of the individual by anthropological methods, and also record and identify other pathological manifestations of diseases. A macroscopic examination has been carried out, with the analysis of the palaeopathological conditions of the remains, and subsequently an X-ray and CT completed analysis.

Interglobular dentine attributed to vitamin D deficiency visible in cremated human teeth.

Vitamin D deficiency has hugely impacted the health of past societies. Its identification in skeletal remains provides insights into the daily activities, cultural habits, and the disease load of past populations. However, up till now, this approach remained impossible in cremated bones, because temperatures reached during cremations destroyed all macroscopic evidence of vitamin D deficiency. This precluded the analyses of a large fraction of the archaeological record, as cremation was an important burial ritual from the Late Neolithic until the Early Medieval period in Europe. Here, the ident

Ancient DNA of Metagonimus yokogawai Recovered from Joseon Period Human Remains Newly Discovered at Goryeong County in South Korea.

PURPOSE: Metagonimiasis, commonly seen in East Asian countries, is a parasitic disorder caused by definitive hosts' ingestion of undercooked freshwater fishes. Recently, genetic analysis has proved 28S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) mtDNA gene to be a successful marker differentiating species of the genus Metagonimus. In the present study, using specimens from the newly discovered Joseon Dynasty human remains of Goryeong, we obtained updated genetic data on genus Metagonimus, which was also prevalent during the Joseon period. METHODS: The ancient DNA (aDNA) was retrieved from t

Strategies for managing rival bacterial communities: Lessons from burying beetles.

The role of bacteria in animal development, ecology and evolution is increasingly well understood, yet little is known of how animal behaviour affects bacterial communities. Animals that benefit from defending a key resource from microbial competitors are likely to evolve behaviours to control or manipulate the animal's associated external microbiota. We describe four possible mechanisms by which animals could gain a competitive edge by disrupting a rival bacterial community: "weeding," "seeding," "replanting" and "preserving." By combining detailed behavioural observations with molecular and

Transcending time: the forensic anthropological case study of three unidentified transgender women in Italy in the early 1990s.

In forensic anthropology, the estimation of skeletal sex results in a dichotomous outcome: male or female. This poses challenges when dealing with transgender individuals. Italy has the highest rate per capita of transgender murders, making their identification a compelling issue. This study presents three cases of unidentified skeletal remains of transgender women (MtF) that underwent autopsies in the 1990s at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Milan. The transgender status of the individuals was determined from the autopsy records which indicated the co-existence of breast implants and male

Comparison of DNA preservation between ribs and vertebrae.

The choice of skeletal element types and their intra-bone parts is important because of differences in DNA preservation, and this must be considered when sampling bones for DNA testing. When incomplete skeletons are found, ribs and vertebrae have been shown to be the most suitable for genetic identification of bones from the torso. This study compares the preservation of DNA between 12th thoracic vertebrae and first ribs to determine which bone type is more suitable for genetic typing. The study analyzed 35 12th thoracic vertebrae and 29 first ribs from one mass grave from the Second World War

Dental evidence of human remains of a Slavic soldier population deported in concentration camps during World War II.

Aims: The aim of this paper was to analyse post-mortem dental records of a collection of 93 skeletal remains exhumed from the ossuary of Bari Municipal Cemetery, Apulia, Italy. These skeletal remains belonged to Slavic soldiers deported in 1941 during World War II in two Italian concentration camps and who died in 1946-1947. Methods: A total number of 1949 teeth were analysed according to the American Board of Forensic Odontology and the WHO methods. The majority of the victims were men (95%) between the age of 18 and 62. Results: The results showed the dental health situation of a population

Non-human bones in forensic casework: not such a trivial problem.

When bones are submitted to mortuaries significant time and resources from both police and anthropologists are required, even if they are subsequently determined to be non-human. A survey of non-human bone casework was made in order to determine the scope of this problem and the different bone types being assessed. This study used data from nine years of casework at the NSW Department of Forensic Medicine (DOFM), Sydney. It analyzed the number of non-human cases that were assessed, the types of animals represented in these bones, the bone elements found, their condition and their location when

Earliest Probable Case of Mueller-Weiss Disease From Ancient Egypt.

Mueller-Weiss disease is an alteration of the tarsal navicular that is primarily due to anomalous ossification of the bone and lateral deviation of the talar head associated with screw-like movement through the axis of the subtalar joint. This syndrome tends to be associated with various degrees of flatfoot and hindfoot valgus combined with subtalar joint varus. Ancient cases of Mueller-Weiss disease have not been described in specialized literature. We present the case of an adult male from the Hellenistic period (Ptolemaic dynasty; fourth to first century BC), the skeleton for which was foun

The study of dental occlusion in ancient skeletal remains from Mallorca (Spain): A new approach based on dental clinical practice.

Occlusal characteristics, fundamental to assess the presence of malocclusion, have been often unexplored in bioarchaeological analyses. This is largely due to the fragmented condition of the skeletal remains. By applying a method that considers dental and maxillary features useful to evaluate occlusion in ancient fragmentary material, the purpose of this work is to define the occlusal features and explore the causes of malocclusion in a mediaeval population from Mallorca. The findings of this study suggest that normocclusion was present in ca. 60% of the individuals (N=31), and that some chara

Long-term mental health and resilience of the first responders in Japanese ground self-defense forces engaging body recovery after the great east Japan earthquake.

Handling human remains is extremely difficult and stressful task, and it can contribute to the development of stress-related mental health problems. To prevent disaster from the development of mental disorders in first responders, it will be important to elucidate factors sustaining psychological well-being following the events requiring handling of human remains. Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF) first responders (n = 146), involved in human remains recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) participated. We examined the psychological resilience (S-H Resilience Test), dep

A comparison between petrous bone and tooth, femur and tibia DNA analysis from degraded skeletal remains.

Skeletal remains are the only biological material that remains after long periods; however, environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and pH affect DNA preservation, turning skeletal remains into a challenging sample for DNA laboratories. Sample selection is a key factor, and femur and tooth have been traditionally recommended as the best substrate of genetic material. Recently, petrous bone (cochlear area) has been suggested as a better option due to its DNA yield. This research aims to evaluate the efficiency of petrous bone compared to other cranium samples (tooth) and postcra
