Body size preference among Yoruba in three Nigerian communities.

Following our previous observation of an aversion to weight reduction in Nigerians with type 2 diabetes, we measured several parameters of body dimensions and preferences in otherwise healthy adults in three communities to study the phenomenon further. The study population of 524 participants (304 F) was 99.8% of Yoruba ethnic origin with a mean age of 43.9 ± 17.2 years. Females had a significantly (p > 0.001) higher body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference compared to the males; the values being 24.55 ± 5.5 vs. 21.75 ± 3.71 kg/m(2); 84.98 ± 12.67 vs. 80.92 ± 9.85 cm; 96.3

Survival of breast-cancer patients and body size indicators.

The association of breast-cancer survival with various risk factors was investigated using data of 213 breast-cancer patients who underwent surgical operation between 1975 and 1978. They were followed-up until 1987, and a total of 64 deaths including 47 breast-cancer deaths were certified. The 5-year and 10-year relative survival rates were 78.5% and 75.3% respectively. Of the various factors investigated, some anthropometric indicators revealed interesting results; i.e., body weight, Quetelet index, and body surface area at the time of operation turned out to be strong predictors of survival

Distinct neural response to visual perspective and body size in the extrastriate body area.

Neuroimaging research has independently implicated the extrastriate body area (EBA) in distinguishing between different visual perspectives and morphologies of bodies within visual processing. However, the combined processing of these physical attributes towards neural EBA response remains unclear, and may be crucial in influencing higher-order, aesthetic evaluation of bodies. Indeed, EBA alterations amongst eating disorder patients have been associated with disturbances in body image, and disruption to EBA activity amongst healthy individuals has been shown to influence aesthetic evaluations

Genome-wide association study of body weight and body size traits in Langya hens.

Langya chicken is a Chinese indigenous chicken breed with high genetic diversity. To systematically analyse the genetic basis of body size traits, eight traits (including BW, comb shape, and body size) of 2 952 Langya hens were measured at 130 days of age and at first egg of age. A total of 9 708 856 high-quality single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were obtained through whole-genome resequencing and used for subsequent genetic parameter estimation and genome-wide association study (GWAS). The results of genetic parameter analysis revealed significant differences in the SNP heritability of d

Association of body size and body fat distribution with uterine fibroids among Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Uterine fibroids are the most common tumors in reproductive women. The present study aims to identify the relationship between uterine fibroids and body size and body fat distribution among Chinese women. METHODS: Data on the records of 826 participants who attended health examinations, including 316 cases and 510 controls were collected from 2009 to 2012 at a health examination center in Beijing. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios of body size, body fat distribution, and body composition after adjusting for age, age at menarche, gravi

Durable left ventricular assist devices in pediatrics: impact of body size on outcomes and size limitations.

Despite the range of body sizes in children, few ventricular assist devices (VAD) exist to support pediatric patients with end-stage heart failure. Large registry data identified weight < 20 kg to be associated with higher rates of VAD-related stroke, compared to > 40 kg. Moreover, patients < 1 years of age experience the highest post-implant mortality, with 1-year survival improving in an age-dependent manner. Within different VAD types, intracorporeal continuous (IC) devices confer the greatest clinical benefit and quality of life compared to paracorporeal alternatives. The major limitation

Body Image in Anorexia Nervosa: Body Size Estimation Utilising a Biological Motion Task and Eyetracking.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric condition characterised by a distortion of body image. However, whether individuals with AN can accurately perceive the size of other individuals' bodies is unclear. METHOD: In the current study, 24 women with AN and 24 healthy control participants undertook two biological motion tasks while eyetracking was performed: to identify the gender and to indicate the walkers' body size. RESULTS: Anorexia nervosa participants tended to 'hyperscan' stimuli but did not demonstrate differences in how visual attention was directed to different body areas

Effects of Size, Body Mass and Body Condition on Tonic Immobility Occurrence in Lissotriton vulgaris.

Tonic immobility is a state of natural paralysis that species across the animal kingdom exhibit as an instinctive response to an external threat. In ectotherms, it has been linked with temperature, but the effects of individual size, body mass and body condition are still poorly understood. We hypothesize that under natural conditions, size, body mass and body condition play an important role in tonic immobility occurrence in smaller ectothermic animals such as the Smooth newt. In this study, we photographed, measured and weighed 357 adult Lissotriton vulgaris from four populations across Bulg

Overestimation of body size in eating disorders and its association to body-related avoidance behavior.

Body-related avoidance behavior, e.g., not looking in the mirror, is a common feature of eating disorders. It is assumed that it leads to insufficient feedback concerning one's own real body form and might thus contribute to distorted mental representation of one's own body. However, this assumption still lacks empirical foundation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between misperception of one's own body and body-related avoidance behavior in N = 78 female patients with Bulimia nervosa and eating disorder not otherwise specified. Body-size misperception w

Body size overestimation and its association with body mass index, body dissatisfaction, and drive for thinness in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Body size overestimation is a fundamental feature in anorexia nervosa (AN). There have been inconclusive findings about the extent to which this feature distinguishes psychopathology and some authors have argued that overestimation may be a function of lower body mass index (BMI). METHODS: We examine body size estimation accuracy and body dissatisfaction in 74 females with AN and 11 age-matched female controls using two well-established psychophysical procedures. RESULTS: Participants with AN overestimated their body size more and had greater body dissatisfaction than controls. S

Environmental drivers of body size evolution in crocodile-line archosaurs.

Ever since Darwin, biologists have debated the relative roles of external and internal drivers of large-scale evolution. The distributions and ecology of living crocodilians are controlled by environmental factors such as temperature. Crocodilians have a rich history, including amphibious, marine and terrestrial forms spanning the past 247 Myr. It is uncertain whether their evolution has been driven by extrinsic factors, such as climate change and mass extinctions, or intrinsic factors like sexual selection and competition. Using a new phylogeny of crocodilians and their relatives, we model ev

Epicardial adipocyte size does not correlate with body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) deposition has a strong association with aspects of metabolic dysfunction, including obesity. The size of the EAT adipocytes in relation to obesity, however, has rarely been researched. Therefore, to contextualise EAT within the broader framework of pathophysiological adipocyte size changes in obesity, we aimed to determine whether EAT adipocyte size is associated with body mass index (BMI). METHODS: During routine post-mortem examination, adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from four depots of 43 cases, including EAT, as well as pericardial (PAT)

Successive resetting of the set point for target body size.

Previous studies support the existence of a central set point for target body size. The set point is a hypothetical fixed reference for body size. The present experiments were carried out to determine whether target body size and, by implication, the putative set point can be consecutively reset or whether, once set by an extraneous factor, it is refractory to another extraneous factor. Male and female rats were given 6.0 Gy whole head X-irradiation at two days of age or were sham-irradiated as controls. Significant permanent reduction of body weight, tibia length, and pituitary weight resulte

Post-mortem size and structure of the human carotid body.

The weights of the carotid bodies have been measured in an unselected group of 40 successive cases coming for routine necropsy. Although the mean weight of the carotid bodies was higher in those subjects with emphysema or Pickwickian syndrome, this difference did not reach a level of statistical significance. Nevertheless, in a group of two patients with cor pulmonale and one with the Pickwickian syndrome the mean weight of the carotid bodies was significantly higher than that of the rest. Such observations would be consistent with enlargement of the glomic tissue in response to chronic hypoxi

Context-dependent trade-offs in body size among Olympic sports.

There is a context-dependent trade-off in body size of elite runners, such that smaller body sizes are observed among longer distance runners. However, it is unclear whether this trade-off in body size is observed in other Olympic sports, such as cycling and swimming. To understand the association between body size and athletic competition, we examined metrics of body size from male and female Olympic athletes competing in swimming, running, and cycling. We collected standard anthropometrics (height, mass, body mass index (BMI), and body surface area) of elite male and female athletes competin

Eye morphometry, body size, and flexibility parameters in myopic adolescents.

The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical and physiological ocular parameters in adolescents with myopia and to examine the relations between refractive error (SER), ocular biometry, body size and flexibility parameters in myopic adolescents. A cross-sectional study of 184 myopic adolescents, aged 15 to 19 years was conducted. Refractive error and corneal curvature measures of the eye were evaluated using an autorefractometer under cycloplegia. Central corneal thickness was determined by contact pachymetry. The ocular axial length, anterior and vitreous chamber depth, and lens th

Optimizing anidulafungin exposure across a wide adult body size range.

Echinocandins like anidulafungin are first-line therapies for candidemia and invasive candidiasis, but their dosing may be suboptimal in obese patients. Our objective was to quantify anidulafungin exposure in a cohort of adults across a wide body size range to test if body size affects anidulafungin pharmacokinetics (PK). We enrolled 20 adults between the ages of 18 and 80 years, with an equal distribution of patients above and below a body mass index of 30 kg/m2. A single 100-mg dose of anidulafungin was administered, followed by intensive sampling over 72 h. Population PK analysis was used t

Gender and the Body Size Aftereffect: Implications for Neural Processing.

Prolonged exposure to wide (thin) bodies causes a perceptual aftereffect such that subsequently viewed bodies appear thinner (wider) than they actually are. This phenomenon is known as visual adaptation. We used the adaptation paradigm to examine the gender selectivity of the neural mechanisms encoding body size and shape. Observers adjusted female and male test bodies to appear normal-sized both before and after adaptation to bodies digitally altered to appear heavier or lighter. In Experiment 1, observers adapted simultaneously to bodies of each gender distorted in opposite directions, e.g.,

Plasma pseudouridine levels reflect body size in children on hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Dialysis in children as well as adults is prescribed to achieve a target spKt/Vurea, where Vurea is the volume of distribution of urea. Waste solute production may however be more closely correlated with body surface area (BSA) than Vurea which rises in proportion with body weight. Plasma levels of waste solutes may thus be higher in smaller patients when targeting spKt/Vurea since they have higher BSA relative to body weight. This study measured levels of pseudouridine (PU), a novel marker solute whose production is closely proportional to BSA, to test whether prescription of dial
