Regional body composition and human core temperature responses to mild temperature water immersion in adults.

This project studied the effects of regional body composition on the core temperature responses to water immersion. Forty-six volunteers participated in the study, with subgroups of eighteen immersed from the neck down in 18, 22, and 26°C water for up to 10 h, respectively. Regional body composition was measured by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Rectal temperature (Tc), and 10-site mean skin temperatures (Tsk) were measured every minute. Immersion durations ranged from 0.83 to 10 h, and Tc ranged from 35.2 to 38.0°C at the end of immersion. Tc cooling rates were calculated over the first 0.

Infrared thermography measured body surface temperature and its relationship with rectal temperature in dairy cows under different temperature-humidity indexes.

The aim of this study was to better understand the inflection point of RT and BSTs and measure different body surface temperatures (BSTs) under different temperature-humidity index (THI) conditions. A total of 488 Holstein dairy cows were chosen to manually measure rectal temperature (RT) and BSTs including left side of eye, ear, cheek, forehead, flank, rump, fore udder, and rear udder by infrared thermography for 14 times. Those measurements included six times under high THI (THI > 78), three times under moderate THI (72 ≤ THI ≤ 78), and five times under low THI (THI < 72). Results showed tha

The open field assay is influenced by room temperature and by drugs that affect core body temperature.

BACKGROUND: The open field assay is used to study anxiety-related traits and anxiolytic drugs in rodents. This assay entails measuring locomotor activity and time spent in the center of a chamber that is maintained at ambient room temperature. However, the ambient temperature in most laboratories varies daily and seasonally and can differ between buildings. We sought to evaluate how varying ambient temperature and core body temperature (CBT) affected open field locomotor activity and center time of male wild-type (WT, C57BL/6) and Transient Receptor Potential Subfamily M Member 8 ( Trpm8) knoc

Body temperature and temperature gradients: changes during the estrous cycle and in response to ovarian steroids.

Rectal temperature, body weight, and vaginal membrane condition were monitored in female guinea pigs in order to determine the pattern and magnitude of changes in these variables across the estrous cycle and as a result of treatment with ovarian hormones. A thermistor probe was used to measure rectal temperatures at depths of 4 and 8 cm and to determine the temperature gradient between these two sites. Data collected across the estrous cycles of 18 intact females were aligned by day of vaginal membrane rupture, the estimated time of ovulation. Compared to measurements during the midluteal phas

Increase of Body Temperature Immediately After Ovulation in Mares.

To successfully inseminate mares, precise detection of ovulation time is crucial, especially when using frozen-thawed semen. Monitoring body temperature, as has been described in women, could be a noninvasive way to detect ovulation. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the time of ovulation and the variation of body temperature in mares based on automatic continuous measurements during estrus. The experimental group included 21 mares for 70 analyzed estrous cycles. When the mares showed estrous behavior, they were administered intramuscular deslorelin acetat

Ultrasound Deep Brain Stimulation Modulates Body Temperature in Mice.

Body temperature plays a critical role in rehabilitation, and numerous studies proved that the regulation of body temperature contributes to the sensorimotor recovery of patients with brain diseases such as stroke. The hypothalamus plays a key role in thermoregulation. Ultrasound deep brain stimulation (UDBS) can noninvasively modulate deep brain nuclei and have potential applications in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and depression, among others. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether ultrasound stimulation of the hypothalamus could regulate body temp

Too Cool? Hip Fracture Care and Maintaining Body Temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with hip fractures can become cold during the perioperative period despite measures applied to maintain warmth. Poor temperature control is linked with increasing complications and poorer functional outcomes. There is generic evidence for the benefits of maintaining normothermia, however this is sparse where specifically concerning hip fracture. We provide the first comprehensive review in this population. SIGNIFICANCE: Large studies have revealed dramatic impact on wound infection, transfusion rates, increased morbidity and mortality. With very few studies relating to

Body temperature rises following improvement of depression with ECT.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported hyperthermia is an efficacious treatment for depression. Thus, we hypothesized that a proven depression therapy such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) would be associated with an increase in body temperature. METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis was conducted on 33 participants who recovered from depression after a course of ECT. All were hospitalized for recurrent, severe symptoms and had no previous ECT treatment. Oral temperature recordings before and after the first and last ECT treatments were collected for each participant. Statistical analys

Core body temperature is normal in chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) frequently report symptoms of subnormal body temperature and low-grade fever. We conducted a study to determine whether CFS subjects manifest any abnormality of core body temperature (CBT) that might help explain their fatigue. METHODS: Continuous 24-hour recordings of CBT measured every 5 min were performed in 7 subjects meeting the Centers for Disease Control definition of CFS. Three additional groups were studied: normal controls, subjects with seasonal allergy, and subjects with major depression. Subjects (n = 7) in each group were

Effects of temperature on denervated carotid body (glomus) cells.

Cat carotid bodies were denervated for 3-31 days by sectioning the carotid nerve. The normal response of glomus cells to cooling by about 6 degrees C, namely, membrane depolarization and reduced input resistance (Ro) was altered. At 3 days, cooling induced normal depolarization although Ro decreased more markedly. At 7 days, cooling depolarized 53% of the cells which was accompanied by variable Ro changes. Forty-seven percent of the cells were hyperpolarized and their Ro increased. At 16 days, a fall in temperature depolarized 25% of the cells which showed variable changes in Ro, whereas the r

Alcohol's effect on body temperature: hypothermia, hyperthermia or poikilothermia?

A series of five experiments was undertaken in order to characterize the pharmacological effects of alcohol on the body temperature of the unrestrained rat. After a thermistor probe was fixed within the colon of each animal and its body temperature had stabilized, physiological saline. 2.0 g/kg or 4.0 g/kg of ethyl alcohol was given by intragastric gavage. A constant concentration of 20% was utilized with doses determined volumetrically according to the individual weight of the animal. The following observations were made: (1) At a laboratory room temperature of 22 degrees C, alcohol produced

Behavioural, electrocortical and body temperature effects of cholera toxin.

In young chicks intrahypothalamic infusion of cholera toxin produced a dramatic and dose-dependent increase in motor activity. Similar effects were also obtained in adult fowls after injection of cholera toxin into the third cerebral ventricle, the hypothalamus or the paleostriatum augmentatum. Electrocortical changes consisted of a slight desynchronization during the hypermotor activity and were preceded, when the highest intraventricular doses were used, by a short period of slower frequency and higher amplitude potentials. Intraventricular and intrahypothalamic but not intrastriatal injecti

Body-temperature responsive hydrogel adhesive for active wound closure.

Hydrogels have extensive application in sutureless wound closure and healing. For relying on the natural recovery rate of the skin or tissue often results in prolonged healing periods due to the gradual process of wound contraction facilitated by cell migration, our approach involves the integration of two distinct layers to create a cohesive and innovative body-temperature responsive hydrogel tape (TRAT). The shape memory layer of P(PTHF-co-PEG-co-PETMP) possesses excellent mechanical properties and adjustable temperature-responsive characteristics. Upon integration with the adhesive layer co
