This paper outlines the development of a finite element human thermoregulatory model using an anatomically and geometrically correct human body model. The finite element body model was constructed from digital Phantoms and is anatomically realistic, including 13 organs and tissues: skin, muscles, fat, bones, heart, lungs, brain, bladder, intestines, stomach, kidneys, liver, and eyes. The model simulates thermal responses through a passive and active system. The passive system describes heat balance within the body and between the skin surface and environment. The active system describes thermo

Regional heterothermy is a pattern whereby different body regions are maintained at different temperatures, often to prioritize the function of certain body parts over others, or to maximize the function of organs and tissues that vary in thermal sensitivity. Regional heterothermy is relatively well understood in endotherms, where physiological mechanisms maintain heterogeneity. However, less is known about regional heterothermy in ectotherms, where behavioral mechanisms are more important for generating thermal variation. In particular, whether small and elongate ectotherms with high surface

The six cylinder thermoregulatory model (SCTM) has been validated thoroughly for resting humans. This type of modeling is helpful to predict and develop guidance for safe performance of work and recreational activities. In the context of a warming global climate, updating the accuracy of the model for intense exercise in warm environments will help a wide range of individuals in athletic, recreational, and military settings. Three sets of previously collected data were used to determine SCTM accuracy. Dataset 1: two groups [large (LG) 91.5 kg and small (SM) 67.7 kg] of individuals performed 60

Heat flux systems are increasingly used to assess core body temperature. However, validation of multiple systems is scarce. Therefore, an experiment was performed in which three commercially available heat flux systems (3 M, Medisim and Core) were compared to rectal temperature (Tre). Five females and four males performed exercise in a climate chamber set at 18 °C/50% relative humidity until exhaustion. Exercise duration was 36.3 ± 5.6 min (mean ± standard deviation). Tre in rest was 37.2 ± 0.3 °C. Medisim's-values were lower than Tre (36.9 ± 0.4 °C, p < 0.05); 3 M (37.2 ± 0.1 °C) and Core's (

The color-mediated thermoregulation hypothesis predicts that dark body color (low reflectance) allows organisms to gain heat more efficiently than does pale coloration (high reflectance). This prediction is intuitive and widely assumed to be true, but has poor empirical support. We used rare, captive-bred, mutant melanistic, albino and wild-type Australian bluetongue lizards, Tiliqua scincoides to measure the effects of skin reflectance on the heating and cooling rates. We measured heating under an artificial radiant heat source and cooling rates in an ice-cooled box using live lizards in a ro

Background: Patients undergoing transurethral urologic procedures using bladder irrigation are at increased risk of perioperative hypothermia. Thirty minutes of prewarming prevents perioperative hypothermia. However, its routine application is impractical. We evaluated the effect of 10 minutes of prewarming combined with the intraoperative administration of warmed intravenous fluid on patients' core temperature. Methods: Fifty patients undergoing transurethral bladder or prostate resection under general anesthesia were included in this study and were randomly allocated to either the control gr

This study aimed to examine the skin temperature (Tsk) variations in five regions of interest (ROI) to assess whether possible disparities between the ROI's Tsk could be associated with specific acute physiological responses during cycling. Seventeen participants performed a pyramidal load protocol on a cycling ergometer. We synchronously measured Tsk in five ROI with three infrared cameras. We assessed internal load, sweat rate, and core temperature. Reported perceived exertion and calves' Tsk showed the highest correlation (r = -0.588; p < 0.01). Mixed regression models revealed that the hea

Maintaining a high and stable body temperature as observed in most endothermic mammals and birds is energetically costly and many heterothermic species reduce their metabolic demands during energetic bottlenecks through the use of torpor. With the increasing number of heterotherms revealed in a diversity of habitats, it becomes apparent that triggers and patterns of torpor use are more variable than previously thought. Here, we report the previously overlooked use of, shallow rest-time torpor (body temperature >30 °C) in African lesser bushbabies, Galago moholi. Body core temperature of three

INTRODUCTION: Casualties with accidental hypothermia are evacuated using multilayer wraps, typically including a chemical heat blanket (CHB), a vapor barrier, and an insulating outer bag. We investigated CHB performance against dry, damp, and wet fabric, in a multilayer wrap, in response to a case report indicating diminished performance when wet.
METHODS: We wrapped a torso manikin in a base layer, CHB, vapor barrier, casualty bag, and vacuum mattress, recording CHB panel temperatures at intervals of up to 7 h. Experimental conditions were dry, damp, and wet clothing, with 2 blankets tested

A numerical investigation is reported comparing various human thermoregulation mechanisms under hot and cold stress. The passive system of the developed model consists of 12 spherical/cylindrical segments and is modeled using the Pennes bioheat equation and finite difference method. The active system accounts for all regulatory responses, including the counter current heat exchange between veins and arteries; the respiratory heat loss; and threshold, gain, and maximum intensity of response mechanisms. The developed code analyzes various thermoregulatory defense mechanisms under hot and cold en

BACKGROUND: Prolonged extrication of entrapped patients after road traffic accidents increases the risk of sustained hypothermia. Accident-related hypothermia increases mortality in severely injured patients, and prehospital efforts to prevent hypothermia are essential. We evaluated various warming measures regarding their preclinical suitability and efficacy for patient warming, tested in realistically-simulated road traffic accident scenarios under cold ambient conditions in a climate chamber.
METHODS: The effects of a chemical warming blanket (CWB), forced-air warming (FAW) device, or infr

Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is one of the few proven neuroprotective modalities in clinical practice. However, current methods to achieve TH are suboptimal. We investigated a novel esophageal device that utilizes high-flow transesophageal dry air to achieve TH via evaporating cooling. Seven Yorkshire pigs (n = 7) underwent hypothermia therapy using a novel esophageal device that compartmentalizes a segment of esophagus through which high-flow dry air freely circulates in and out of the esophagus. Efficacy (primary objective) and safety (secondary objective) were evaluated in all animals. Safe

Most experts agree that the dominant mechanism through which body temperature is regulated, under a thermal challenge, environmental or metabolic, is negative feedback control. However, some consider negative feedback to be too sluggish to account for the rapid speed of response. The impression of sluggishness is based on an assumption that the body temperature that is regulated is a core temperature, whereas we concur with those who have concluded that what is regulated is an integrated temperature compiled from inputs from multiple body parts, including the skin. Negative feedback control is

In this, the second of four historical reviews on human thermoregulation during exercise, we examine the research techniques developed by our forebears. We emphasise calorimetry and thermometry, and measurements of vasomotor and sudomotor function. Since its first human use (1899), direct calorimetry has provided the foundation for modern respirometric methods for quantifying metabolic rate, and remains the most precise index of whole-body heat exchange and storage. Its alternative, biophysical modelling, relies upon many, often dubious assumptions. Thermometry, used for >300 y to assess deep-

This study validates the Six Cylinder Thermoregulatory Model (SCTM) during prolonged warm water immersion, which underpins the Probability of Survival Decision Aid (PSDA) currently in use by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). PSDA predicts survival time for hypothermia and dehydration. USCG has been using PSDA for search and rescue operation since 2010. In 2019, USCG organized a workshop to review PSDA performance and concluded that PSDA is an essential tool for operation, although it occasionally overestimates survival times in warm waters above 16 °C. Forty-six human subjects were immerse

PURPOSE: This study examined the thermoregulatory response and ergogenic effects of ice slurry (ICE) ingestion in hot environments with high and low relative humidity (RH).
METHODS: Eight males completed four trials in a crossover manner in dry (DRY: 34.7 ± 0.2 °C, 38 ± 2%RH) and humid heat (HUM: 34.8 °C ± 0.2 °C, 80 ± 1%RH). They ingested 8.0 g·kg-1 of ICE (0.0 °C) or 37.5 °C water (CON) during 30 min before exercise, and three aliquots (3.2 g·kg-1) of ICE or CON during 45-min cycling at 50%[Formula: see text]O2peak, followed by cycling to exhaustion at 80%[Formula: see text]O2peak (TTE). The current systematic review evaluated the effects of different pre-cooling techniques on sports performance in highly-trained athletes under high temperature conditions. PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CENTRAL, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched from inception to December 2019. Studies performing pre-cooling interventions in non-acclimatized highly-trained athletes (>55 mL/kg/min of maximal oxygen consumption) under heat conditions (≥30 °C) were included. The searched reported 26 articles. Pre-cooling techniques can be external (exposure to ice water, cold packs, or cool

We investigated the validity of infrared tympanic temperature (IR-Tty) during exercise in the heat with variations in solar radiation. Eight healthy males completed stationary cycling trials at 70% peak oxygen uptake until exhaustion in an environmental chamber maintained at 30°C with 50% relative humidity. Three solar radiation conditions, 0, 250 and 500 W/m2, were tested using a ceiling-mounted solar simulator (metal-halide lamps) over a 3 × 2 m irradiated area. IR-Tty and rectal temperature (Tre) were similar before and during exercise in each trial (P > 0.05). Spearman's rank correlation c

Cold water or ice slurry ingestion during exercise seems to be an effective and practical means to improve endurance exercise performance in the heat. However, transient reductions in sweating appear to decrease the potential for evaporative heat loss from the skin by a magnitude that at least negates the additional internal heat loss as a cold ingested fluid warms up to equilibrate with body temperature; thus explaining equivalent core temperatures during exercise at a fixed heat production irrespective of the ingested fluid temperature. Internal heat transfer with cold fluid/ice is always 10
