PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the radiological and functional results of secondary thumb reconstruction via ectopic banking of bony phalanges from a nonreplantable amputated thumb.
METHODS: Thumb reconstruction was performed using the bony phalanges from a nonreplantable amputated thumb that were ectopically banked in a subcutaneous pocket. A wraparound flap was harvested from the ipsilateral great toe and wrapped around the bone graft. After surgery, the results were assessed in terms of infection, range of motion, bone union of the graft, and signs of osseous resorption of the recon

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood is a potential vast source of primitive hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells available for clinical application to reconstitute the hematopoietic system and/or restore immunological function in affected individuals requiring treatment. Cord blood can be used as an alternative source for bone marrow transplantation and its use is developing into a new field of treatment for pediatric and adult patients presenting with hematological disorders, immunological defects and specific genetic diseases.
DISCUSSION: More than 25,000 allogeneic cord blood transplantati

The IAEA was instrumental in developing the first Malaysian tissue bank at University Hospital of Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), Kubang Kerian, Kelantan in early 1990s and it was officiated as National Tissue Bank in 1994. Up to date, 38 government and private hospitals have received a supply from the bank. Bone allografts in term of bone chips, morsalised bone and long bones are procured from Malaysian donors. Almost thirty students from Malaysia graduated in the training courses carried out in Singapore since 1998 at regional and interregional levels. Organ donation is more readily accept

Cord blood banks are being developed in the United States and Europe. In The Netherlands, the EuroCord Nederland Foundation (ECN) has been established to coordinate the development of a national cord blood bank for unrelated transplants. The aim of ECN is to collect at least 5000 transplants for patients who lack an HLA-identical related or unrelated bone marrow donor. Four blood banks in Leiden, Groningen, Nijmegen and Amsterdam, Europdonor Foundation and the Department of Hematology of the Leiden University Medical Center participate in this organization. From March 1995 to November 1997, 72

The B.C. Ear Bank was established in 1974 as a temporal bone laboratory devoted to the study of hearing loss and histological examination of temporal bones. It expanded its activities to the collection and preservation of homograft otologic tissue needed for the ever expanding field of ear surgery. The function of the ear bank in these two fields is discussed in detail.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an accepted curative therapy for many malignant and non-malignant conditions affecting children and adults. Where possible, stem cells for HSCT are provided by human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched, related donors. Only 30% of patients have a suitable matched donor; for other patients, donors are sought from bone marrow registries or public umbilical cord blood (UCB) banks. While public UCB banks have been established to support transplant programs in Australia and internationally, parents also have the option of storing their child's UCB in a

Marrow donor registration and cord blood banking are essential components of the infrastructure required for unrelated haemopoietic stem cell transplantations. We now have a new law to support and regulate the Marrow Donor Coordination Agency, Cord Blood Banks and the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Provision Support Organization. We also need to have a specific goal for bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell donor registration, a minimum cord blood bank size, and the demographic data to back the medical needs for unrelated haemopoietic stem cell transplantations. To improve bone marrow and perip

Thirty-seven patients underwent posterior and/or posterolateral spinal fusion using ethylene oxide gas-sterilized freeze-dried bank bone graft. Thirteen patients had discogenic back pain, eight with prior failed laminectomy procedures, and five undergoing initial spinal surgery. Six patients had isthmic spondylolisthesis, three with associated radicular complaints, and two patients had degenerative spondylolisthesis. Seven patients with spinal fractures and nine patients with scoliosis underwent spinal fusion with associated instrumentation. Pseudarthroses were detected in 28 patients (76%), a

This report discusses the authors' technique in performing anterior cervical vertebrectomy and interbody fusion for multilevel cervical disease. The technique is performed with a high-speed drill and bone-bank fibular strut graft. After decompression of the cervical canal, ledges are made in the intact vertebral bodies to create a rectangular bed for safe seating of the bone graft. The bone-bank fibular strut graft is a feasible alternative to autograft. The simplified and safe nature of this procedure reduces postoperative morbidity as well as the length of hospital stay.

Efforts to implement family cord blood banking have been developed in the past decades for siblings requiring stem cell transplantation for conditions such as sickle cell disease. However, public banks are faced with challenging decisions about the units to be stored, discarded, or used for other endeavors. We report here 20 years of experience in family cord blood banking for sickle cell disease in two dedicated public banks. Participants were pregnant women who had a previous child diagnosed with homozygous sickle cell disease. Participation was voluntary and free of charge. All mothers unde

BACKGROUND: iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cells) banks of iPSC lines with homozygous HLA (human leukocyte antigen) haplotypes (haplobanks) are proposed as an affordable and off-the-shelf approach to allogeneic transplantation of iPSC derived cell therapies. Cord blood banks offer an extensive source of HLA-typed cells suitable for reprogramming to iPSC. Several initiatives worldwide have been undertaken to create national and international iPSC haplobanks that match a significant part of a population.
METHODS: To create an iPSC haplobank that serves the Spanish population (IPS-PANIA), we hav

The use of allogeneic bone bank bone was evaluated in 67 patients, operated for disorders of the spine. In 26 patients with paralytic scoliosis a pseudarthrosis developed three times and there was one infection. In 28 patients with other causes of scoliosis there were also three cases with pseudarthrosis. In the group of posterolateral arthrodesis of the lumbar spine we saw four patients out of 13 with pseudarthrosis. The results are in accordance with the literature. The use of allogeneic bone in scoliosis surgery is justified in view of the acceptable pseudarthrosis rate and the low incidenc

Despite the huge number of volunteer donors registered worldwide, only a mean of 50% of patients not having a family donor are transplanted with an unrelated donor. Since 1990, a network has been implemented among some European registries. With the help of the European Community, a more sophisticated network has been developed, the European Marrow Donor Information System (EMDIS). A new project underwent development by registries and the Bone Marrow Donor Worldwide: the EMDIS Cord Blood Registry. It will in the future permit to obtain after a search request, one report containing all of the be

Umbilical cord blood (UCB) has gradually emerged over the last decade as an alternative source of hematopoietic cells for transplantation in children and adults with high-risk or advanced hematologic malignancies who do not have a suitably matched related or unrelated adult donor. This increase in use of UCB is due to favorable results in children, growing availability of UCB units with large cell doses, less stringent donor-recipient HLA matching, and rapid identification and acquisition of the unit. In children with acute leukemia, the data support similar leukemia-free survival after transp

Clinical application of human freeze-dried bone matrix gelatin (BMG) in the bone-cysts is reported. The BMG is produced at the West Hungarian Regional Tissue Bank in Gyór under principles of the American and European Association of Tissue Banks. BMG was applied to fill bone cysts in maxilla and mandible. The BMG has many advantages in comparison to other materials in the management of maxillofacial cysts. Of 31 cases 28 primary bone-heating have been detected clinically assessed by X-ray and histologically in three cases there was secondary restoration. In the favourable courses very fast and

The results of a study of the use of autograft versus allograft bone in the surgery of idiopathic adolescent scoliosis are presented. Two groups of patients, matched for age, sex, level and angle of curve, received bone grafts, 20 patients having autogenous bone from the iliac crest and the other 20 having donor bone from a bone bank. Both groups had otherwise identical posterior fusions and Harrington instrumentation. There was no difference between the two groups in a blind, radiographic assessment of bone graft mass at six months, nor in maintenance of the curve correction over the same per

Cord blood is an excellent source of stem cells which are universal for all other cells of the whole body. They have the ability to develop in any of the body cells, depending on stimulation by different growth factors. The ease of sampling, cryopreservation, and above all successful engraftment make placental blood a possible alternative for bone marrow donation. The advantages of cord blood cells over bone marrow stem cells in allogeneic transplants include their young age and immature status, which reduce the severity of graft versus host reaction. However, the number of cells is much more

Umbilical cord blood is being increasingly used as an alternative stem cell source in the treatment of children and adults with malignant and non-malignant diseases. Data regarding the outcome of children show promise. Furthermore, transplantation of cord blood from an unrelated donor should be considered as an acceptable alternative for adults in the absence of an HLA-matched bone marrow donor. In the past 10 years cord blood banking has become a world-wide reality. However, problems in cord blood banking are caused by the controversial and conflicting interests of public and private cord blo

This Act establishes a registry of all sperm banks and tissue banks operating in Delaware. It requires all donors of semen for the purposes of artificial insemination, or donors of corneas, bones, organs, or other human tissue for the purpose of injecting, transfusing, or transplanting them in the human body to be tested for evidence of exposure to the AIDS virus.

We report a 27-year-old male patient with acute myeloid leukaemia who was successfully treated with an unrelated bone marrow graft within 7 days following the loss of his autologous bone marrow graft. Several factors were found to be essential in order to locate an HLA-ABDR (DRB1)DQ(DQB1) identical, sex-matched, CMV-negative and ABO compatible donor within a week. These included a common HLA phenotype of the patient, the presence of an experienced donor registry in close proximity to a blood bank associated with an HLA laboratory, a large donor file with fully HLA-ABDR typed donors and the alm
