Imaging Review of the Temporal Bone: Part II. Traumatic, Postoperative, and Noninflammatory Nonneoplastic Conditions.

The first part of this review of the temporal bone discussed anatomy of the temporal bone as well as inflammatory and neoplastic processes in the temporal bone region (1). This second part will first discuss trauma to the temporal bone and posttraumatic complications. The indications for common surgical procedures performed in the temporal bone and their postoperative imaging appearance are then presented. Finally, a few noninflammatory nonneoplastic entities involving the temporal bone are reviewed. They are relatively uncommon diagnoses compared with infectious or inflammatory diseases. Howe

Correlations between Dental Implant Infectious Pathologies and Maxillary Sinusitis: A Review Article.

(1) Background: The demands of patients for aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of edentulous areas led to the use of dental implants as therapeutic means on an increasingly large scale. This aspect determined the appearance of some infectious pathologies with a peri-implant starting point that can be complicated by various sinus diseases. The purpose of this review article is to synthesize the existing information in the specialized literature regarding the existing correlations between peri-implant and maxillary sinusitis. (2) Methods: The articles published in five databases were resear

Imaging of Spine Infections.

The incidence of spondylodiskitis has increased over the last 20 years worldwide, especially in the immunodepressed population, and it remains a complex pathology, both in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Because clinical symptoms are often nonspecific and blood culture negative, imaging plays an essential role in the diagnostic process. Magnetic resonance imaging, in particular, is the gold standard technique because it can show essential findings such as vertebral bone marrow, disk signal alteration, a paravertebral or epidural abscess, and, in the advanced stage of disease, fusion or colla

The phytochemical plumbagin reciprocally modulates osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Bone metabolism is essential for maintaining bone mineral density and bone strength through a balance between bone formation and bone resorption. Bone formation is associated with osteoblast activity whereas bone resorption is linked to osteoclast differentiation. Osteoblast progenitors give rise to the formation of mature osteoblasts whereas monocytes are the precursors for multi-nucleated osteoclasts. Chronic inflammation, auto-inflammation, hormonal changes or adiposity have the potential to disturb the balance between bone formation and bone loss. Several plant-derived components are descr

[RANKL and periodontitis].

Periodontal disease is characterized by inflammation of the periodontal tissue and subsequent destruction of the alveolar bone. It is one of the most common infectious diseases in humans, being the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Recently, it has been shown that the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) produced by osteoblasts and periodontal ligament fibroblasts critically contributes to the bone destruction caused by periodontal disease. Activation of the immune system plays an important role in the induction of RANKL during periodontal inflammation. Here we discuss the molecular

From acute infection to chronic osteoimmune remodeling: immunopathogenesis and precision immunotherapeutic strategies in osteomyelitis.

Osteomyelitis is a severe infectious and inflammatory disease that significantly affects bone tissue. It progresses from an acute inflammatory response to refractory chronic osteomyelitis and bone defects, constituting a core challenge in current clinical therapeutics and functional reconstruction. In the acute osteomyelitis stage, innate immune cells such as neutrophils, monocytes-macrophages, and dendritic cells are rapidly recruited and release large amounts of cytokines, chemokines, and extracellular traps. These work in synergy with adaptive immune responses, including T/B cells, to form

[Disorders of vitamin D metabolism in clinical practice].

Results of recent studies give evidence of a pandemic of vitamin D deficiency due largely to insufficient exposure to sunlight. Epidemiological surveys demonstrated that vitamin B deficiency corresponding to blood calcidiol levels below 75 nmol/l or 30 ng/ml has negative effect on human health, increases the risk of cardiovascular disorders, malignant neoplasm, autoimmune and infectious diseases in proportion to the severity of deficit. Patients with extreme deficiency (calcidiol levels below 25 nmol/l or 10 ng/ ml) suffer osteomalation/rickets, diffuse muscular pain, myodystrophy, and enhance

How Would You Manage This Diabetic Patient With a Foot Infection? Grand Rounds Discussion From Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Foot infections are the most common cause of hospitalization in patients with diabetes. They may be superficial, involving only the skin, or deep, involving the soft tissues or bone. Superficial infections are generally caused by aerobic gram-positive cocci, whereas deep infections, including osteomyelitis, tend to be polymicrobial in origin. Clinical manifestations of skin and soft tissue infections include local evidence of inflammation, but peripheral neuropathy and peripheral artery disease may mask these findings. Management is determined by the extent of infection and often includes oral

Neutropenia in dogs and cats: a retrospective study of 261 cases.

Case records of 232 dogs and 29 cats with neutropenia were reviewed to examine the spectrum of underlying etiologies causing the neutropenia. Six etiological categories included nonbacterial infectious disease; increased demand due to marked inflammation, bacterial sepsis, or endotoxemia; drug-associated neutropenia; primary bone-marrow disease; immune-mediated neutropenia; and diseases of unclear etiology. The largest single category associated with the development of neutropenia was nonbacterial infectious disease (e.g., feline leukemia virus [FeLV], feline immunodeficiency virus [FIV], hist

Protocatechualdehyde inhibits receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand-induced osteoclastogenesis and attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory osteolysis.

Inflammatory osteolysis as a consequence of chronic bacterial infection underlies several lytic bone conditions, such as otitis media, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, periodontitis, periprosthetic infection, and aseptic loosening of orthopedic implants. In consideration of the lack of effective preventive or treatments options against infectious osteolysis, the exploitation of novel pharmacological compounds/agents is critically required. The present study assessed the effect of protocatechualdehyde (PCA), a natural occurring polyphenolic compound with diverse biological activities including

The INfectious DIsease REgistry BIObank (INDI-REBIO): protocol for the design and implementation of a single-centre, prospective registry and biobank in a tertiary care centre in Italy for advancing infectious disease research.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases are a major global health concern, responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. To advance the understanding and treatment of these diseases, biobanks and biorepositories play a crucial role in guaranteeing sample traceability through their entire life cycle (collection, acquisition and registration, processing, storage, distribution) and future analysis of clinical and biological data. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The INfectious DIsease REgistry BIObank (INDI-REBIO) is an observational, prospective, monocentric, open-ended registry with ad hoc procedures an

Development of an Informatics Algorithm to Link Seasonal Infectious Diseases to Birth-Dependent Diseases Across Species: A Case Study with Osteosarcoma.

Many diseases have been linked with birth seasonality, and these fall into four main categories: mental, cardiovascular, respiratory and women's reproductive health conditions. Informatics methods are needed to uncover seasonally varying infectious diseases that may be responsible for the increased birth month-dependent disease risk observed. We have developed a method to link seasonal infectious disease data from the USA to birth month dependent disease data from humans and canines. We also include seasonal air pollution and climate data to determine the seasonal factors most likely involved

A Sr@Ag-based spatiotemporal and step-release scaffold against chronic osteomyelitis, fabricated by coaxial 3D-printing.

Chronic osteomyelitis (OM) represents a severe and persistent infectious bone disease. Effective treatment requires controlled anti-inflammatory releases and bone regeneration across disease phases. A Sr@Ag-based scaffold was successfully printed, featuring micron-scale coaxial fibers containing Ag-doped hydroxyapatite (HA) in the outer layer of PLLA and Sr-doped HA in the inner layer of PLLA, facilitating the spatiotemporal and sequential release of Ag and Sr ions during OM treatment. Most antibacterial agent (Ag) was released during the first 20 days, followed by a slow-release plateau over

Carica Papaya Linn. Leaf Extracts Induced the Proliferation of Mice's Peritoneal Macrophages and Bone Marrow Cells, Along with Cytokine Modulation in Cell Culture.

PURPOSE: Carica papaya is used alone or with other herbs in traditional medicine to treat infectious diseases; nonetheless, comprehensive scientific validation of this claim is limited. We conducted this preliminary study to explore its immunomodulatory potential through cytokine modulation. METHODS: An aqueous ethanolic crude extract of plant leaves was evaluated for phytochemical groups, total flavonoid, and phenolic content using aluminum chloride and Folin-Ciocalteu's methods. The crude extract and its derived fractions were compared with thin-layer chromatography, and antioxidant propert

A case of tertiary neurosyphilis presenting with moth-eaten bone lesions.

Syphilis, the "great imitator," with regard to skin diseases, is a chronic systemic infectious disease with a clinical course that waxes and wanes. The incidence of tertiary syphilis had decreased drastically these decades. We report a case of tertiary neurosyphilis presenting with moth-eaten bone lesions of the lower extremities. To the best of our knowledge, we have not seen such reports.
