CONTEXT: Collagen vascular diseases are frequently included in the differential diagnosis for unexplained cytopenias and often prompt a bone marrow biopsy in this patient population to exclude malignancy. Few large-scale studies have characterized the bone marrow morphology in patients with collagen vascular disease, and most are limited to systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis.

AIMS: The utility of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy (BMAB) as a diagnostic tool in patients with HIV/AIDS and fever of unknown origin (FUO) is a subject of debate. Because highly active antiretroviral therapy has reduced incidence of opportunistic infections, it is important to reassess the efficacy of BMAB for this diagnostic purpose. To our knowledge, no such studies have been performed in Harris County which has the highest incidence of HIV in the state of Texas.

Fungal infections are usually seen in elderly or immuno-compromised individuals particularly with human immunodeficiency virus infection. In immuno-competent individuals, they seldom present with overt clinical symptoms. In such cases diagnosis is made by combination of tests along with direct microscopic visualization of the organism. The preliminary results of a prospective study of androgen therapy in the treatment of bone marrow insufficiency in children are reported. This study includes 11 children with the Fanconi syndrome, 21 idiopathic and 3 with toxic aplastic anaemia. Nine patients died early in the course of treatment. Impaired liver function was observed in 28% of patients and virilization in 37% of patients.
