Clitoral Anatomy in the Feminist Literature: Vagina obscura: An anatomical voyage (2020) and Clitoral Conventions and Transgressions: Graphical representations in anatomy texts, c1900-1991 (1995).

O'Connell et al. proposed that the vestibular bulbs be renamed the "clitoral bulbs" because of their consistent relationship to the clitoris and inconsistent relationship to the vestibule. Normally such proposed esoteric changes in anatomical nomenclature would get little notice by anatomists, yet alone the general public; however, many subsequent articles and books placed this change in the context of centuries of male anatomists and physicians downplaying female sexual anatomy and sexuality. Most prominent is a 2022 book by Rachel Gross, Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage. Here we review t

The history and science of chocolate.

This article gives an account of the origins, evolution and properties of chocolate. Chocolate is processed from the pod or cabosside of the cacao plant, grown in the tropical belt. The origins of chocolate are traced back to the Maya people who were probably the first to cultivate the cacao plant. The early chocolate drink, considered a "drink of the Gods" was mixed with cinnamon and pepper, tasting bitter and strong, and was most appreciated for its invigorating and stimulating effects than for its taste. Imported from the Americas, the softened version soon spread in Europe. From the 1800s

'Malignant' macroscopic appearance of an inflammatory testicular lesion--a reminder for surgeons.

Inflammatory changes in the tunica vaginalis testis may assume a misleading appearance which is highly suggestive of malignancy. Obviously, histological examination is crucial for establishing the corrent diagnosis. This phenomenon has been described in texts dealing specifically with testicular pathology, but is not emphasized in standard text books of urology, surgery or pathology. An illustrative case serves as the basis for discussing this entity, for the purpose of familiarizing it to surgeons, urologists and pathologists who are yet unaware of it.

Ruptured subcapsular hematoma of the liver due to pre-eclampsia presenting as interstitial pregnancy and the role of intra-abdominal packing.

Ruptured subcapsular hematoma of the liver (RSHL) can mimic ruptured interstitial pregnancy because each of these conditions occasionally presents at the same gestational period and both do manifest hemodynamic instability. The similarities between the two conditions pose a diagnostic challenge, especially in an un-booked patient. We report a case of an un-booked primigravida, at 21 weeks of gestation, who arrived at a regional hospital with evidence of intra-abdominal bleeding and hypovolemic shock. She was diagnosed as potentially having a ruptured interstitial pregnancy. During the ensuing

Keeping the fire burning: Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Paul Richer, Charles Féré and Alfred Binet.

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) was the one of the world's leading physicians during the final third of the 19th century. Rewarded in 1882 with the creation of the first chair in the diseases of the nervous system, he was extremely successful at recruiting loyal and talented students. Charcot himself never produced a general treatise on hysteria, but instead encouraged his pupils to write their own books. Here, we describe how the work on hysteria of Georges Gilles de la Tourette, Paul Richer, Charles Féré and Alfred Binet was closely associated with Charcot, and how they remained faithful to

Copping Coping With the Braced Limbs.

Harold Copping illustrated an edition of Charles Dickens' classic, "A Christmas Carol." One of the paintings of Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim in the book shows Tiny Tim wearing braces on his lower limbs. Several diagnoses of Tiny Tim's ailment have been suggested in the past but based on the details of Copping's painting we suggest that he had rickets. The above-knee braces with uprights only on the lateral side of the limbs may have been given to prevent genu valgum, a common deformity in childhood rickets.

Mouse models for the study of human hair loss.

A comparison has been presented to illustrate many of the similarities in patterns of disease between mouse and human hair follicle diseases and how various mouse mutations can be used as research tools to investigate these observations. The powerful genetic tools available for investigating mouse mutations and human homologues will continue to result in many breakthroughs in the understanding of hair follicle biology and pathology. Many more mouse mutations are available than are described here. Information on these mutations fills books and computer databases, providing an unlimited resource

Hoodia gordonii: a natural appetite suppressant.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Several species of the stapeliads, a group of stem succulents belonging to the family Apocynaceae are reported on in the ethnopharmacology literature and many of the references relate to their use as food plants. The most important of these plants is Hoodia gordonii, which during the past decade has risen from an almost forgotten spiny, desert plant to an important commercial appetite-suppressant herbal. The aim of this review is to summarize the botany, ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of Hoodia gordonii. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Journal articles and books were used to c

George Sclavunos (1869-1954): Anatomical Insights and His Contribution into the "Magenstrasse of Waldeyer".

The purpose of this article is to present a well-known physician and highlight his contribution into an essential, but neglected anatomical feature. George Sclavunos (1869-1954) was a 20th century Greek physician, whose scientific work was a significant milestone in global medical knowledge. In 1899 he became Professor of Anatomy and Head Director of the Department of Anatomy. In 1906 Sclavunos G. published the first volume of the three volume book "Human Anatomy" (1906-1926), which is characterized by its unparalleled illustrations. For more than a century it was the most important book of me

Adapting pediatric dermatology textbooks in South America: enhancing visual representation for skin of color patients.

Skin diseases have different visual characteristics in skin of color, making recognition a challenge. Pictures and illustrations of darker skin tones in the literature are scarce. In American pediatric dermatology books, less than 40% of photographs depict skin of color. No similar studies have been conducted for South American pediatric dermatology books. This study evaluates the frequency of photographs of skin of color in pediatric dermatology textbooks and atlases. A prospective documentary study was conducted on the skin color of clinical photographs from 5 pediatric dermatology books (4

Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Techniques of 15th Century Turkish Surgeon Serefeddin Sabuncuoglu.

INTRODUCTION: Şerefeddin Sabuncuoğlu, in his surgical medicine book entitled "Imperial Surgery" (Cerrâhiyetü'l-Hâniyye) that was published in the 15th century, described many diseases using colored miniatures, and explained the repair of these conditions using surgical methods and the required patient care after surgery. In his handwritten treatise, Sabuncuoğlu raised the curtain on his surgical methods with his illustrations. As a first in medical history, Sabuncuoğlu's book should be considered one of the most important original works from that era. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The handwritten "Im

[Creation of Stereo Color Anatomical Charts Showing Nerve Fibers in the Cerebral Lobe and Gyrus of the Brain for Use in the MR Examination].

In anatomical charts in conventional books, the pathways of nerve fibers are drawn in illustrations. Conversely, with diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), we can visually understand the trajectory of nerve fibers through color. We created a stereo color anatomical chart of the nerve fibers that can be used for magnetic resonance (MR) examination to diagnose the pathway of nerve fibers and that can be used to explain the results of MR examination to visually understand how nerve fiber information is transmitted from the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, cerebellar lobe

Reading Disabilities in Adolescents and Adults.

PURPOSE: Reading skills continue to develop into adolescence and adulthood. Difficulties in reading have lifelong repercussions. Many speech-language pathologists who work with older individuals in the school setting face significant issues, including those mandated by recent changes in legislation. Theoretical topics related to reading development and disorders include the variety of orthographic systems across languages and the ways in which adults who are literate in an alphabetic orthographic system experience changes to their spoken and written language processing. In addition, older read

[A new terminology for urinary cytopathology: The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology (2015)].

As for the Bethesda system for cervical and thyroid cytopathology, a terminology for reporting urinary cytology has been published in 2015. The new "Paris System" provides a consensus terminology for urinary cytology which underlines the criteria for the recognition of high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC) and of those excluding HGUC, or suspicious for HGUC. It also focuses on new rules to recognize and report the subgroup of "atypical urothelial cells". Here we describe and illustrate the various categories as in the reference book. We analyse the main diagnostic criteria, including microsco

Literary neurologic syndromes. Alice in Wonderland.

Many neurologic syndromes are named for literary characters. For example, the "Alice in Wonderland" syndrome of altered body perceptions, usually caused by migrainous ischemia, is so called because of the resemblance of its symptoms to the fluctuations in size and shape that plague the main character in Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel Alice in Wonderland. The medical symptoms of distorted body images match the literary description so precisely that illustrations from the original book depict them very accurately. Because Lewis Carroll suffered from classic migraine headaches, scholars have speculat

The butcher on the bus: A note on familiarity without recollection.

In 1980, George Mandler published an article in Psychological Review that has become very influential in the study of memory. As evidence, according to Google Scholar (as of August 17, 2020), this article has been cited 3,391 times. Writing about recognition memory, Mandler made a fundamental distinction between recognition involving familiarity and recognition involving recollection. Mandler introduced what has since become the label for his illustration, saying that "Specific identification of an event is not possible on the basis of its familiarity alone. The butcher-in-the-bus is one intui

Sadomasochism in the perversions: some thoughts on the destruction of reality.

The author summarizes and develops some of her viewpoints on the perversions (outlined in several of the books and articles she has written). For her all the perversions, whatever their content, develop against an anal sadomasochistic backdrop. Their aim is to destroy reality. Reality, from a psychosexual perspective, may be defined as resulting from the existence of the father separating the mother and the child. This may be formulated in another way: reality is recognition of sexual and generational differences. Or, yet again: mother and father have a procreative sexuality, whereas the child
