Disease dynamics across political borders: the case of rabies in Israel and the surrounding countries.

An eco-historical analysis facilitated the identification of the socio-political, demographical and environmental changes that have affected the distribution and abundance of vertebrates living in Israeli and Palestinian territories, their pathogens and the extent of human - animal contacts, all contributing to the risk of rabies, leading to three deaths in the late 90's. There are indications that the implementation of uncoordinated control strategies with a lack of an ecological perspective on one side of the border, such as the destruction of the main reservoirs, led to the emergence of a m

Mapping human glymphatic compartments and putative meningeal border pathways in diseased models.

Accumulating preclinical evidence has highlighted the importance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compartmentalization and transport. However, detailed structural characterization in humans remains challenging. This study utilized contrast-enhanced T2-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging on 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a cohort of 477 patients, primarily with reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS), to provide a noninvasive in vivo diseased model to delineate distinct subarachnoid compartmentalization and potential leptomeningeal arteriovenous perivascular shunti

Epidemiological Impact of Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Rural Spanish-Portuguese Cross-Border Region.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological data indicate that neurodegenerative diseases show a high prevalence with a progressive increasing trend, especially in aging populations, as is the case in rural areas. The objective of this study was to assess the quantitative impact of neurodegenerative diseases in rural areas of the Spanish-Portuguese border region and to describe the epidemiological profile of the most prevalent disorders in one of the most depopulated and aged regions of Europe. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed to estimate the prevalence of subjects diagnosed with t

Region of birth and cardiovascular disease in Mexican Americans living in the Texas-Mexico border.

The study aims to determine whether place of origin has an effect on Mexican American cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk on the South Texas Border. Although many studies have investigated the effect of immigration on Mexican American health, few have considered how region of origin may impact CVD risk. Subjects in the Cameron County Cohort Study were divided into 3 groups according to place of origin: Southern Mexico, Northern Mexico, and U.S. Border States. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses were conducted using CVD biomarkers and self-reported angina, stroke, and elevated blood pr

Antigen-specific adaptive immunity in Parkinson's disease: peripheral priming, brain-border reactivation and parenchymal injury.

Adaptive immune signals in Parkinson's disease (PD) now extend beyond descriptive neuroinflammation. Human genetic studies have implicated HLA variation, peripheral assays have detected α-synuclein- and PINK1-reactive T cells, neuropathology has identified early nigral CD8 + T-cell accumulation, and PD-relevant models have linked α-synuclein or mitochondrial antigen presentation to defined T-cell programs. This Review first places these findings in the modifying context of aging and then examines two antigen-specific routes across peripheral T-cell priming, central nervous system (CNS)-border

Cross border population movements across three East African states: Implications for disease surveillance and response.

The frequent population movement across the five East African Countries poses risk of disease spread in the region. A clear understanding of population movement patterns is critical for informing cross-border disease control interventions. We assessed population mobility patterns across the borders of the East African states of Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. In November 2022, we conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and participatory mapping. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and a topic guide used during interviews. Key informants included bo

First Report and Genetic Characterization of Border Disease Virus in Sheep from Hulunbuir, Northeastern China.

Border disease virus (BDV), a member of the Pestivirus genus within the Flaviviridae family, is known to inflict significant economic losses on livestock farms due to its association with reproductive disorders and persistent infections in sheep and goats. However, comprehensive epidemiological investigations of BDV in China are scarce. This study examined BDV infection in sheep from Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, northeastern China, utilizing metagenomic sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Among the 96 serum samples analyzed, only one tested positive for BDV nucleotide sequence,

Border Patrol Gone Awry: Lung NKT Cell Activation by Francisella tularensis Exacerbates Tularemia-Like Disease.

The respiratory mucosa is a major site for pathogen invasion and, hence, a site requiring constant immune surveillance. The type I, semi-invariant natural killer T (NKT) cells are enriched within the lung vasculature. Despite optimal positioning, the role of NKT cells in respiratory infectious diseases remains poorly understood. Hence, we assessed their function in a murine model of pulmonary tularemia--because tularemia is a sepsis-like proinflammatory disease and NKT cells are known to control the cellular and humoral responses underlying sepsis. Here we show for the first time that respirat

Alterations in lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood of sheep persistently infected with border disease virus.

Fourteen sheep persistently infected with border disease virus were investigated to examine the effects of persistent viraemia on lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood and their responses to the mitogen phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) in vitro. Persistently infected sheep had significantly more CD8+ (cytotoxic-suppressor) T-lymphocytes than uninfected sheep of the same age (P less than 0.001). The total number of CD4+ (helper) T-lymphocytes were not significantly different but there were more T-lymphocytes (CD5+) which were CD4- and CD8- in normal sheep than persistently infected sheep (P le

Hereditary "draft lamb" disease of Border Leicester sheep: the ultrastructural pathology of the skeletal muscles.

A hereditary and congenital disease of Border Leicester lambs clinically indistinguishable from the "draft lambs" of Innes et al. (1949) but with no cerebellar lesion, is defined in terms of the ultrastructural pathology of the muscle, intramuscular nerves and neuromuscular junctions. The pathognomonic feature of these congenitally affected lambs was the occurrence of large intrafascicular muscle cells. On the basis of the mitochondrial content and Z disc thickness these were considered to be one of two subtypes of type I cell. There was evidence of muscle cell growth in all cell types between

Seroprevalence of border disease virus and other pestiviruses in sheep in Algeria and associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Border disease virus (BDV) is a pestivirus responsible for significant economic losses in sheep industry. The present study was conducted between 2015 and 2016 to determine the flock seroprevalence of the disease in Algeria and to identify associated risk factors. 56 flocks from nine departments were visited and 689 blood samples were collected from adult sheep between 6 and 24 months of age (n = 576) and from lambs younger than 6 months (n = 113). All samples were tested by RT-PCR as well as by Ag-ELISA, to detect Persistently Infected (PI) animals. Serum samples from adults were

Pathogenic Landscape of Transboundary Zoonotic Diseases in the Mexico-US Border Along the Rio Grande.

Transboundary zoonotic diseases, several of which are vector borne, can maintain a dynamic focus and have pathogens circulating in geographic regions encircling multiple geopolitical boundaries. Global change is intensifying transboundary problems, including the spatial variation of the risk and incidence of zoonotic diseases. The complexity of these challenges can be greater in areas where rivers delineate international boundaries and encompass transitions between ecozones. The Rio Grande serves as a natural border between the US State of Texas and the Mexican States of Chihuahua, Coahuila, N

Border tuberculosis: Migrant tuberculosis screenings and the enactment of disease in the Indonesia-Malaysia migration corridor.

Documented migrant workers from Indonesia recruited for work in Malaysia need to undergo tuberculosis screenings before being issued work permits and visas. Centered on the production, circulation, and interpretation of chest X-ray images, these screenings are shaped in concrete, practical ways by the demands of border control regulations requiring them. By focusing on how these screenings are practiced in Indonesian clinics, I argue that migrant tuberculosis screenings in the Indonesia-Malaysia migration corridor enact a distinct form of tuberculosis, co-determined by its relation to border c

Morbidity of viral vaccine preventable diseases in the Mexican states bordering the U.S., 2014-2023.

Mexico and the United States share an international boundary with a considerable extension. The objective of this retrospective study is to assess the morbidity of viral vaccine preventable diseases in the six Mexican states bordering the U.S. from 2014 to 2023. Viral vaccine preventable diseases are a major health concern because they can cause serious illness and death. From the analysis of 9 nationally notifiable viral vaccine preventable diseases, only varicella and mumps had a significant higher incidence than the national average. A higher incidence of varicella was also observed in the

Repatriation of a Critically Ill Coronavirus Disease 2019-Positive Patient Across Closed Borders.

We report on the international retrieval of a critically ill, ventilated, coronavirus disease 2019-positive patient from Dili, East Timor, into the intensive care unit of the Royal Darwin Hospital in Australia. The patient had severe respiratory failure, and the medical team in Dili was struggling to maintain adequate oxygenation with a fraction of inspired oxygen of 1 most of the time. This occurred during an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 in East Timor, placing strain on the local health system. Therefore, it was decided to transfer the patient to Australia. Given the closed internatio

Climate change, migration, and infectious disease vulnerability at Europe's southern border: Lampedusa as a sentinel interface.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean basin is warming faster than the global average, reshaping ecological niches for vector-borne, water-borne, and environmentally linked pathogens. Concurrent climate shocks across the Sahel, West Africa, and the Horn of Africa-combined with conflict, food and water insecurity, and fragile health systems-drive sustained mobility toward North Africa and Europe. Frontline entry points along the Central Mediterranean route often capture early clinical signals of these pressures. METHODS: We conducted a narrative, expert-informed evidence synthesis integrating peer-rev

Approved and experimental countermeasures against pestiviral diseases: Bovine viral diarrhea, classical swine fever and border disease.

The pestiviruses, bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), classical swine fever (CSFV) and border disease virus, are important livestock pathogens in many countries, but current vaccines do not completely prevent the spread of infection. Control of pestiviral diseases is especially difficult due to the constant viremia and viral shedding of persistently infected (PI) animals, which must be identified and eliminated to prevent disease transmission. Existing vaccines are limited by the delay between vaccination and the onset of protection, the difficulty of differentiating serologically between vacc
