Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a clinically significant and extensively studied personality disorder (PD), associated with substantial impairment, risk, treatment needs, and health-system burden. Contemporary debates about its classification now occur within diagnostic systems that already move beyond purely categorical models, including ICD-11 and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. The central question is therefore not simply whether dimensional assessment should be incorporated into PD diagnosis, but how general personality disorder diagnosis, named categorical

Scientific evidence has documented throughout the research carried out in recent years, the neuropsychological, behavioral and adaptive difficulties presented by people with Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder at different stages of their development. However, little importance has been given to other factors such as communication, especially in the adult population. The objective of this research was to know the language characteristics presented by people from both groups and the differences in linguistic development. The sample consisted of 60 participants between the ages

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder share some clinical features and have similar correlates. It is, therefore, not surprising that differential diagnosis is sometimes difficult. The Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) is the most widely used screening scale for bipolar disorder. Prior studies found a high false-positive rate on the MDQ in a heterogeneous sample of psychiatric patients and primary care patients with a history of trauma. In the present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services project, we examined whether psychi

We examined the rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) (using PDE and SCID-II) and substance abuse or dependence (SCID-I) (BPD-SUD) (N=82) compared with those with BPD-only (N=102), exploring mediators of this relationship. Participants were interviewed about STD history (gonorrhea, genital herpes, syphilis, trichomonas, human papillomavirus, and HIV), condom use, number of sexual partners, poverty, and prostitution. BPD-SUD appeared to be particularly at high risk for STDs, reporting significantly more STDs than BPD (F[1,172]=11.74, p

Psychotherapy, the standard treatment for borderline personality disorder, is often difficult to access, and its application in the field is hampered by neurocognitive and psychosocial impairments. This lack of care contributes to the psychosocial stagnation of vulnerable individuals, which is costly for society, particularly in terms of repeated visits to emergency rooms and prolonged hospitalizations. This context also leads to professional burnout and harmful stigmatization. Follow-up care aims to limit these episodes by anticipating emergency situations and gradually reintegrating patients

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious but treatable mental health condition with a good prognosis for those who access appropriate treatment. Early identification, provision of brief interventions and continuity of care aids remission, and is possible without general practitioners (GPs) getting burned out.
OBJECTIVE: This paper provides a brief overview of practical tips and useful resources for GPs to feel more equipped to provide effective care and support remission for individuals diagnosed with BPD.
DISCUSSION: People with BPD frequently present with complex prob

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been a controversial diagnosis for over 40 years. It was to be removed from the latest version of the ICD, only to be reintroduced as a trait qualifier as a result of last-minute lobbying. Retaining BPD as a de facto diagnosis keeps us stuck at a deadlock that undermines the voices of patients who have persistently told us this label adds 'insult to injury'. Miranda Fricker's concept of epistemic injustice helps illuminate how this affects subjectivity and speech, hermeneutically sealing patients in ways of thinking that are not evidence-based, resulti

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterised by structural and functional brain alterations. Yet, there is little data on functional connectivity (FC) across different levels of brain networks and parameters. In this study, we applied a multi-level approach to analyse abnormal functional connectivity. We analysed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data sets of 69 subjects: 17 female BPD patients and 51 age-matched psychiatrically healthy female controls. fMRI was analysed using CONN toolbox including: a) seed-based FC analysis of amygdala connectivity, b) inde

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and disabling mental health disorder and has detrimental effects on affected individuals across multiple domains. We aimed to investigate whether individuals with BPD differ from control subjects in terms of cognitive functions, and to see if there is a relationship between cognitive functions, impulsivity, and BPD symptom severity.
METHODS: BPD individuals (n = 26; mean age = 26.7; 69.2% female) and controls (n = 58; mean age = 25.3; 51.7% female) were enrolled. Intra/Extra-Dimensional Set Shift (IED) and One Touch Stockings of Cam

Objective and Method: Female autism can be misdiagnosed as borderline personality disorder, leading to mistreatment and unnecessary harm. By educating clinicians on how female autism can mimic borderline personality disorder, we can increase the accuracy and effectiveness of diagnosis, ultimately improving patient outcomes.Result: There is a common myth that clinicians can easily recognise borderline personality disorder, leading to a shortcut in the diagnostic process and the potential for missing signs of autism in early childhood. Conclusion: Clinicians must be encouraged to pursue thorough

Research on the understanding and especially on the treatment of borderline personality disorder (borderline PD) has made considerable progress in recent years, so that evidence-based German treatment guidelines have now been produced for the first time. This article highlights the development as well as the main content priorities and recommendations of the guidelines: first, the recommendations on the diagnostics are presented and in this context the upcoming changes to the International Classification of Diseases 11th reversion (ICD-11) are also explained. Subsequently, the most important r

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients commonly suffer from nightmares. Still, the prevalence of this issue does not match the little clinical attention it usually receives. Nightmares impact sleep and daily functioning and may play a role in BPD symptomatology, including suicidality. Since BPD has been linked with high rates of suicide, the potential connection with suicidality is crucial to address.
AIMS: To create an up-to-date review of current knowledge on nightmares in BPD and to explore the links between nightmares, insomnia, and suicidality or self-harm in BPD pati

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is fundamentally a syndrome composed of symptoms (primarily of emotional dysregulation) and a number of true personality traits (such as inordinate anger, impulsivity, and a tendency to stress-related paranoid ideation). Whereas schizotypal personality disorder, with its cognitive peculiarities (ideas of reference, odd beliefs, eccentric speech), is closely linked as a genetic condition-"borderline" to the major condition schizophrenia-BPD is less closely linked to bipolar disorder. Some cases of BPD are linked genetically to and are in the "border" of bip

The core features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) include problematic interpersonal relationships, behavioral and affective dysregulation, identity problems, and cognitive dysregulation. Cognitive dysregulation, such as catastrophizing, rumination, and thought suppression, contributes to emotion dysregulation in BPD. Previous research suggested that thought suppression fully mediated the relationship between negative affect intensity/reactivity and BPD symptoms. We predicted that catastrophizing similarly will serve as a mediator between negative affect intensity/reactivity and BPD sy

OBJECTIVE: Both sleep disorders and BPD are prevalent in the population, and one is often a comorbidity of the other. This narrative review aims to assess contemporary literature and scientific databases to provide the current state of knowledge about sleep disorders in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and clinical suggestions for managing sleep disorders in BPD patients and future research direction.
METHODS: Articles were acquired via PubMed and Web of Science, and papers published between January 1980 and October 2020 were extracted. Authors made a series of literature s

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional instability, impulsivity, disturbed cognition, sleeplessness and states of high inner tension. Altered arousal regulation which is regarded as a higher domain of functioning according to the research domain criteria of the NIMH and which has previously been reported in several psychiatric disorders, such as mania or major depression could be involved in these features of BPD.
METHODS: 40 unmedicated patients with BPD and 42 matched healthy volunteers participated in a twenty minute resting-state EEG measurement wi

BACKGROUND: Genes associated with the physiological response to stress in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are considered as good candidates for genetic research in borderline personality disorder (BPD).
METHODS: In this study, five FKBP5 (a co-chaperone of the glucocorticoid receptor) SNPs (rs3800373, rs9296158, rs737054, rs1360780, rs9470080) were genotyped in a sample of 101 unrelated Caucasian patients with BPD and 111 ethnically matched healthy controls. The interaction between FKBP5 polymorphisms and childhood trauma was also tested.
RESULTS: All FKBP5 polymorphisms genotyped sh

Relationship dysfunction is a key criterion of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of romantic relationship functioning in BPD. In this study, couples in which the women were diagnosed with BPD (BPD couples) and healthy control couples (HC) were compared in their perceived relationship characteristics (e.g., relationship quality) and interpersonal experience variables (e.g., attachment). The hypothesis was tested that insecure attachment styles account for group differences in relationship characteristics. Variables were measured by se

Comorbidity with a borderline personality disorder is far from rare in patients suffering from eating disorders. Clinically, this presents as chronic instability in many areas: interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, mood and acting out. Treatment is mainly based on a containing and reassuring therapeutic framework. A care plan may be put in place that incorporates reducing impulsive harmful, eating and self-harming behaviours. Dialectical behaviour therapy is intended in particular to prevent suicide risk in borderline personality disorder patients.
