Prosthetic joint infection by Bordetella holmesii: Case report and a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Bordetella holmesii is a Gram-negative coccobacillus involved in different infections mostly described in case reports. Prosthetic joint infections in relation to this pathogen are rare. Here, we present the third case of B. holmesii in a patient without anatomical or functional spleen dysfunction. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 62-year-old female with a total knee prosthesis implanted in 1997 that required multiple replacements of the femoral component due to aseptic loosening in the past years. The patient was admitted to our hospital for an elective replacement surgery due to

Clinical outbreak of Bordetella avium infection in two turkey breeder flocks.

An acute upper respiratory disease was observed in two broad-breasted white (BBW) turkey primary breeder flocks. Associated clinical signs included sneezing, depression, and a deep dry cough originating from large conducting airways. Morbidity reached approximately 15-20% of the hens in an affected house. None of the turkeys died, and total feed consumption was not affected. A minimal effect upon egg production was noticed. Sera from an acutely affected flock exhibited a marked rise in titer to Bordetella avium compared with preinfection sera samples. In Case 1, B. avium was isolated in pure c

Bordetella pertussis Infection: From Immune Pathogenesis to Next-Generation Vaccines.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis and remains a persistent global health challenge despite widespread vaccination. This review aims to analyze the immune pathogenesis of B. pertussis infection and to identify key immunological limitations of current acellular pertussis vaccines that contribute to ongoing transmission. A narrative review of the literature was conducted, focusing on mechanisms of host-pathogen interaction, immune evasion, and vaccine-induced immunity. Evidence indicates that although acellular vaccines effectively reduce diseas

Interferon lambda signaling in neutrophils enhances the pathogenesis of Bordetella pertussis infection.

Interferon lambda plays diverse roles in bacterial infections. Previously, we showed that interferon lambda is induced in the lungs of Bordetella pertussis-infected adult mice and exacerbates inflammation. Here, we report that mice lacking the interferon lambda receptor 1 specifically on neutrophils (MRP8creIFNLR1fl/fl mice) exhibit reduced lung bacterial load and inflammation compared to wild-type mice during B. pertussis infection. In B. pertussis-infected wild-type mice, lung type I and III IFN responses were higher than in MRP8creIFNLR1fl/fl mice, correlating with increased lung inflammato

Fatal case of macrolide-resistant Bordetella pertussis infection, Japan, 2024.

Here, we present a fatal case of macrolide-resistant Bordetella pertussis (MRBP) infection in a 1-month-old female infant born prematurely at 34 weeks of gestation. The infant, unvaccinated against pertussis, exhibited respiratory failure, bilateral pneumonia, and hyperleukocytosis (109.8 × 109/L) on day 44 of life. Despite initial treatment with azithromycin and a high-flow nasal cannula, her condition deteriorated rapidly, requiring mechanical ventilation and venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The infant passed away four days after symptom onset. Nasopharyngeal swabs confirmed

Neonatal infection with Bordetella pertussis promotes autism-like phenotypes in mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been linked with infections early in life. Here we demonstrate that the infection of neonatal mice with the respiratory pathogen Bordetella pertussis leads to neuroinflammation, neurodevelopmental defects, and ASD-like behaviors. Following the respiratory challenge of neonatal mice with B. pertussis, multiple atypical CNS findings were observed, including blood-brain barrier disruption, dissemination of live B. pertussis bacteria to the brain with the concomitant infiltration of inflammatory monocytes, neutrophils, and activated IL-17A- and IFN-γ-producing CD

Prior infection with Bordetella bronchiseptica enhanced colonization but not disease with Streptococcus suis.

Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus suis are widely distributed swine pathogens. B. bronchiseptica is a primary pathogen and causes atrophic rhinitis and bronchopneumonia. S. suis is a contributing agent to porcine respiratory disease complex and causes systemic diseases including arthritis, meningitis, polyserositis, and septicemia. Colonization with B. bronchiseptica has been associated with increased colonization by other pathogenic bacteria and increased disease severity with viral and bacterial pathogens. It has also been reported to predispose cesarean derived, colostrum deprived

Bordetella bronchiseptica pneumonia a thread in the diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Bordetella (B.) bronchiseptica is primarily a zoonotic pathogen, which is often found in upper respiratory tract of various domestic and wild animals. Human infections are rarely reported in immunocompromised patients and are associated with a wide spectrum of presentation ranging from mild cough, tracheobronchitis to sepsis and death. Here, we describe a case of B. bronchiseptica pneumonia that led to the diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection. The diagnosis of B. bronchiseptica infection can be challenging, as there are no distinctive imaging features. This infection mimics Pneu

Protective effects of in vivo-expressed autotransporters against Bordetella pertussis infection.

Bordetella pertussis causes whooping cough, a severe and prolonged respiratory disease that results inhas high morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in developing countries. The number incidence of whooping cough cases is increasing in many countries despite high vaccine coverage. Causes for the re-emergence of the disease include the limited duration of protection conferred by the acellular pertussis vaccines (aP)s and pathogenic adaptations that involve antigenic divergence from vaccine strains. Therefore, current vaccines therefore need to be improved. In the present study, we focused

Bordetella pertussis infection in children with severe pneumonia, Philippines, 2012-2015.

A case-comparison study was conducted based on an observational study of severe pneumonia among hospitalized children in the Philippines. The children, from 8days to 13years old and hospitalized with clinical diagnosis of severe or very severe pneumonia from August 2012 to February 2015, were recruited. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 1152 cases and B. pertussis were detected from 34 cases by PCR. Pertussis-positive cases were more likely to have no fever, more than one week of coughing and breathing difficulty, decreased breathing sounds, and central cyanosis than pertussis- negative

Different mechanisms of vaccine-induced and infection-induced immunity to Bordetella bronchiseptica.

A recent resurgence in the number of cases of whooping cough, and other respiratory diseases caused by members of the bordetellae, in vaccinated populations has demonstrated the need for a thorough understanding of vaccine-induced immunity to facilitate more intelligent vaccine design. In this work, we use a murine model of respiratory infection using the highly successful animal pathogen, Bordetella bronchiseptica. Since previously infected animals have been shown to resist re-infection by B. bronchiseptica, we sought to examine the differences between vaccine-induced immunity and infection-i

Infected branchial cleft cyst due to Bordetella bronchiseptica in an immunocompetent patient.

A healthy 23-year-old man with fever and a tender mass in his right anterior neck was found to have a branchial cleft cyst infected with Bordetella bronchiseptica. Initial testing suggested a Brucella species, but further laboratory testing identified the organism definitively. B. bronchiseptica infection in healthy adults is an unusual event.

Human serum antibody responses to Bordetella pertussis infection and pertussis vaccination.

We used an immunoblotting technique to compare the serum antibody responses to pertussis toxin (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), a 69-kilodalton (kDa) adenylate cyclase-associated protein (69 KD protein), and Bordetella pertussis outer membrane proteins (OMPs) following either B. pertussis infection or immunization with whole-cell pertussis vaccine. Infection and vaccination induced nearly equally intense antibody responses to PT and to FHA, but vaccination induced stronger antibody responses to the 69 KD protein and to many OMPs. The importance of serum antibody responses to the 69 KD pr

Simultaneous infection with Bordetella pertussis and respiratory syncytial virus in hospitalized children.

We compared three groups of hospitalized children with Bordetella pertussis infection, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and dual B. pertussis/RSV infections in an effort to establish clinical and laboratory criteria by which to distinguish children with dual infections from children infected with either organism alone. The groups were compared for admission laboratory data, history of present illness, perinatal history and immunization history. Children with pertussis were more likely to have been premature (less than 37 weeks gestation) than children with RSV infections only (11 of

The influence of the route of immunization on the protection of mice infected intracerebrally with Bordetella pertussis.

The development of immunity in mice to Bordetella pertussis induced by intracerebral, intravenous or intraperitoneal vaccination was analysed in terms of the viable bacteria in the brain after intracerebral challenge, the serum antibodies, and protection against the sublethal infection of the lung that follows intranasal inoculation.A vaccine introduced intracerebrally was five to ten times more effective than that given intraperitoneally or intravenously, as measured for each route by the amount of vaccine required to protect half the mice against an intracerebral challenge 14 days later (ImD

Asymptomatic Bordetella pertussis infections in young African infants and their mothers identified within a longitudinal cohort.

Despite long-standing vaccination programs, pertussis incidence has increased in numerous countries; transmission by asymptomatic individuals is a suspected driver of this resurgence. However, unequivocal evidence documenting asymptomatic infections in adults and children is lacking due, in part, to the cross-sectional nature of most pertussis surveillance studies. In addition, modern pertussis surveillance relies on quantitative PCR (qPCR) using fixed diagnostic thresholds to identify cases. To address this gap, we present a longitudinal analysis of 17,442 nasopharyngeal samples collected fro

Bordetella bronchiseptica infections in patients with HIV/AIDS: A case report and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a common cause of upper respiratory tract infections in domesticated dogs and cats and a rare zoonotic pathogen in immunocompromised humans. With increasing numbers of people acquiring pets and spending time with them in confined spaces due to COVID-19 lockdowns, it is important to be aware of adverse health consequences brought about by this interaction. We present a case of B bronchiseptica pneumonia in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and review key characteristics of an additional 30 cases of B
