Perioral movements and sucking pattern during bottle feeding with a novel, experimental teat are similar to breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: To measure intraoral pressure and perioral movement in infants during breastfeeding (BF) and feeding with experimental teat (ET). The teat has a wide base, firm shaft and a valve at the base, such that milk flows only when the baby provides a hold pressure. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty healthy term infants, between 1 and 8 months old, were enrolled in the study. Feeding sessions (BF and ET) were recorded using a digital video camera. During both BF and ET feeding sessions, recordings during feeding were taken of jaw and throat movements (n=20) as well as intraoral pressure (n=18). The effi

Geospatial variation of bottle feeding practice among children aged 0-23 months in East Africa: Geographically weighted regression analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bottle-feeding a baby aged 0-23 months is the act of giving any liquid or semi-solid food from a bottle with a nipple. Bottle feeding can increase their risk of excessive weight gain, malnutrition, iron deficiency, and reduced birth spacing. However, no study has been conducted on geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis and the factors associated with bottle-feeding practice. OBJECTIVE: To assess the geospatial variation and determinants of bottle-feeding practice among children aged 0-23 months in East Africa using GWR. METHODS: A total sample of 28,562 children aged

Advantages of side-lying position. A comparative study of positioning during bottle-feeding in preterm infants (≤34 weeks GA).

BACKGROUND: The quality and safety of bottle-feeding in premature infants can be improved by optimal positioning. This study analysed the advantages of side-lying position (SLP) and semielevated position (SEP) during bottle-feeding in premature infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 42 neonates (n=42) born ≤34 weeks of gestational age were included in the study. Four feeding sessions-two in SLP and two in SEP- were analysed for each newborn. The level of saturation (SpO2) and heart rate, which are the parameters assessing the physiological stability, were measured in the studied newborns.

A Descriptive Investigation of Infant Feeding Bottles Marketed in the UK Designed to Replicate Breastfeeding and the Evidence That Underpins Them.

Scant attention has been given to the marketing of infant feeding bottles and teats with claimed equivalence to breastfeeding. Such bottles are purported as having 'breast-like' qualities and to be interchangeable with breastfeeding, encouraging breastfeeding mothers to combine breast and bottle feeding. However, the introduction of bottle feeding alongside breastfeeding can have a negative impact on breastfeeding duration and lead to cessation. We investigated features of infant feeding bottles marketed in the United Kingdom to replicate breastfeeding and appraised the underpinning evidence.

Impact of breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Immediately after cleft lip repair, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are generally restricted to avoid placing tension on the surgical incision. However, no consensus about feeding methods after cleft lip repair has been reached. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the impact of breastfeeding and/or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Mednar from October to November 2017. Two reviewers independently as

Impact of breastfeeding or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants: a systematic review protocol.

REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to examine the impact of breastfeeding or bottle-feeding on surgical wound dehiscence after cleft lip repair in infants. BACKGROUND: Immediately after cleft lip repair in infants, breastfeeding and bottle-feeding are generally restricted. Alternative feeding methods such as spoon-feeding are recommended to avoid placing tension on the surgical wound. However, some studies have reported that alternative feeding methods are a source of stress to the infant and cause them to cry incessantly, resulting in postoperative weight l

Interventions Targeting Bottle and Formula Feeding in the Prevention and Treatment of Early Childhood Caries, Overweight and Obesity: An Integrative Review.

Overweight, obesity and early childhood caries (ECC) are preventable conditions affecting infants and young children, with increased prevalence in those formula-fed. Previous research has focused on distinct outcomes for oral health and healthy weight gain. However, the aetiology may be linked through overlapping obesogenic and cariogenic feeding behaviours, such as increased sugar exposure through bottle propping and overfeeding. Best-practice bottle feeding and transition to cup use may concurrently reduce overweight, obesity and ECC. This integrative review aimed to identify interventions s

The effect of tube versus bottle feeding colostrum on immunoglobulin G absorption, abomasal emptying, and plasma hormone concentrations in newborn calves.

The objective of this study was to determine if feeding colostrum to newborn calves through an esophageal tube, compared with a nipple bottle, would delay abomasal emptying, which would in turn decrease passive transfer of IgG and plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon-like peptide (GLP) 1 and GLP-2 concentrations. Twenty newborn Holstein bull calves were fed 3 L of colostrum replacer (200 g of IgG) through either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle at 2 h after birth followed by feeding pooled whole milk every 12 h after birth. Acetaminophen was mixed into the colostrum meal as a marker for ab

Elective cesarean section and bottle-feeding do not reduce infection of hepatitis B in infants of high viremic mothers: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the issue of whether elective cesarean section (ECS) may reduce mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HBV in infants of carrier mothers with high viremia (HBV DNA > 2 × 105 IU/ml) showed inconsistent results. In addition, whether breastfeeding may cause MTCT of HBV is still a concern. We compared the MTCT rates in infants born to non-antiviral mothers with HBV DNA > 2 × 105 IU/ml with different delivery and feeding modes. METHODS: In total, 460 mothers with HBV DNA > 2 × 105 IU/ml and their 462 infants (2 twin sets) were included. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) an

Effects of Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and High-Flow Nasal Cannula on Sucking, Swallowing, and Breathing during Bottle-Feeding in Lambs.

The use of prolonged respiratory support under the form of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) or nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) is frequent in newborn infants. Introduction of oral feeding under such nasal respiratory support is, however, highly controversial among neonatologists, due to the fear that it could disrupt sucking, swallowing, and breathing coordination and in turn induce cardiorespiratory events. The recent observation of tracheal aspirations during bottle-feeding in preterm infants under nCPAP justifies the use of animal models to perform more comprehensive physiol

Patterns of brain electrical activity in infants of depressed mothers who breastfeed and bottle feed: the mediating role of infant temperament.

Successful breastfeeding involves a dyadic interaction between a mother and her infant. The present study was designed to examine the association between breastfeeding and temperament in infants of depressed mothers. Seventy-eight mothers, 31 who were depressed, and their infants participated. Depressed mothers who had stable breastfeeding patterns were less likely to have infants with highly reactive temperaments. Multivariate analyses of variances (MANOVAs) showed that infants of depressed mothers who breastfed did not show the frontal asymmetry patterns, i.e., left frontal hypoactivity, pre

Bottle feeding and exposure to Toxocara as risk factors for wheezing illness among under-five Amazonian children: a population-based cross-sectional study.

We investigated the prevalence and risk factors for wheezing and asthma in young Amazonian children. A population-based cross-sectional survey of 606 children aged 6-59 months was performed in two small towns in Acre State, Northwestern Brazil. Information on outcome variables (recent wheezing and medical diagnosis of asthma) and demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, maternal and nutritional variables was obtained by interviewing children's mothers or guardians. Infections with intestinal parasites and antibodies to the zoonotic nematode Toxocara were diagnosed using standard laboratory t

Multilevel modeling analysis of bottle feeding and its determinants among children 0-23 months in East Africa: evidence from recent DHS data (2015-2022).

BACKGROUND: Despite breastfeeding recommendations, the prevalence and length of breast milk feeding in developing nations is rapidly decreasing, with bottle feeding taking its place. This reduces the effectiveness of breastfeeding and is associated with diarrheal disease mortality and morbidity. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, and determinants of bottle feeding among under-two-year-old children in the region. METHODS: The ten East African countries' Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) recent data from 2015 to 2022 was used. The data were weighted usin

The Kumagai Method Utilizing the Pigeon Bottle Feeder with a Long Nipple: A Descriptive Study for the Development of Feeding Techniques for Children with Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

We aimed to identify the steps involved in the Kumagai method-an experimental nursing procedure to feed children with cleft lip and/or palate, using a feeder with a long nipple. We conducted a descriptive study, enrolling five specialist nurses who have mastered the Kumagai method. Their approaches were examined using structured interviews. Moreover, the participants were asked to perform the sequence of actions involved in this method while describing each step. Therefore, we were able to explore the Kumagai method in depth and step-by-step, including the following aspects: correct infant pos

Bioaccumulation of cadmium in common green bottle fly Lucilia sericata and its impact on insect development - prospect for use in feed and food production.

This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of cadmium from natural feed substrate and substrate enriched with CdCl2 and CdO by the common green bottle fly, Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Cadmium was determined in all developmental stages (larvae, adults, and puparial cases) of L. sericata, and its accumulation was positively correlated with concentrations in insect diets. Higher bioaccumulation factors of Cd were found in larvae and adults fed with naturally contaminated liver tissues (1.3-3.9) than those fed with liver enriched with cadmium in the form of inorganic compou
