Intoxication with botulinum neurotoxin, which occurs frequently in Poland, may cause serious diagnostic difficulties. As no assays for laboratory detection of botulinum toxin are available and the biological test on mice requires time before results are obtained, diagnosis must be based on clinical findings and patient's epidemiological history. Quick diagnosis and early administration of therapy with equine antitoxin is essential for patient's recovery. The effectiveness of antitoxin therapy is considered to be significantly reduced if the treatment is not started shortly after the onset of t

Laboratory-based pathogen isolation, identification, and toxicity determination were performed on samples from a suspected case of infant botulism. Mice injected with cultures generated from the enema sample and ingested Powered infant formula (PIF) presented typical signs of botulism. Antitoxins to polyvalent botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) and monovalent BoNT type B antitoxin had protective effects. Clostridium botulinum isolated from the enema and residual PIF samples were positive for type B toxin. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed that the two strains of C. botulinum isolated

BACKGROUND: Botulism caused by type F botulinum toxin accounts for less than 0.1% of all human botulism cases and is rarely reported in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old woman presented to an emergency department complaining of blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and dysphagia. The treating physician initially considered the possibility of paralytic shellfish poisoning due to a report of shellfish ingestion, which was later determined to be frozen shrimp and a can of tuna, but no gastroenteritis or paresthesias were present. During the emergency department observation, the patient d

Two cases of botulism occurred in Montreal following the ingestion of commercially canned liver paste. A toxigenic, proteolytic strain of Clostridium botulinum type B was isolated from the paste in which type B toxin was also demonstrated by animal protection tests. One patient died undiagnosed about 45 hours after eating several liver-paste sandwiches. The second developed diplopia, dysphagia, speech difficulty and weakness 18 hours after ingestion of three bites of a sandwich. All symptoms progressed until admission to hospital where he was treated with 160,000 units of divalent botulinum AB

Antitoxin is currently the only approved therapy for botulinum intoxications. The efficacy of antitoxin preparations is evaluated in animals. However, while in practice antitoxin is administered to patients only after symptom onset, in most animal studies, it is tested in relation to time postintoxication. This may be attributed to difficulties in quantitating early botulism symptoms in animals. In the current study, a novel system based on high-resolution monitoring of mouse activity on a running wheel was developed to allow evaluation of postsymptom antitoxin efficacy. The system enables aut

BackgroundBotulinum toxin is widely used for the treatment of spasticity in pediatric patients with cerebral palsy. Although regarded as safe, rare but severe systemic complications, such as iatrogenic botulism, may arise.Case PresentationWe present the case of an 8-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who experienced global muscle weakness, bilateral ptosis, dysphagia, and respiratory distress after botulinum toxin A (Dysport). The clinical presentation was consistent with iatrogenic botulism. The patient was administered botulinum antitoxin, resulting in a gradual enhancement of the condition. S

Botulinum toxin is the most potent toxin known to humans and as little as 100 ng can be lethal. The toxin blocks peripheral cholinergic neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction and cholinergic autonomic nervous system by introducing an endopeptadase enzyme into the presynaptic side of the synapse. The endopeptadase cleaves acetylcholine vesicle docking proteins that are required for the synapse to release acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft. Botulism occurs from consumption or inhalation of preformed botulinum toxin or growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria in the infant gastrointes

In infant botulism, use of equine-derived botulinum antitoxin before BIG-IV may be clinically justified when the infant-specific product is delayed. Future case reports should document the treatment decision pathway, antitoxin timing, risk-benefit justification, guardian counseling, adverse-event monitoring, and relapse-prevention rationale to make such emergency decisions reproducible.

Botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by botulinum toxin, which is produced by the Clostridium botulinum. This toxin is the most poisonous substance known. It 100 000 times more toxic than sarin gas. Eating or breathing this toxin causes illness in humans. Four distinct clinical forms are described: foodborne, wound, infant and intestinal botulism. The fifth form, inhalational botulism, is caused by aerosolised botulinum toxin that could be used as a biological weapon. A deliberate release may also involve contamination of food or water supplies with toxin or C. botulinum bac

With the increase of sporadic cases of foodborne botulism and the occurrence of several large incidents of botulinum contamination in food, botulism has received greater attention in clinical practice. Foodborne botulinum toxin poisoning is an acute foodborne toxic disease caused by ingestion of food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum exotoxin. We present two cases of foodborne botulism affecting a mother and daughter who were admitted to our department after consumption of vacuum-packed rabbit-head meat. The time to symptom onset was less than 24 h in the daughter (aged 8 years) and 1 we

Botulism is a neuroparalytic syndrome resulting from the systemic effects of an exoneurotoxin produced by gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Here, we present the case of a 40-year-old male, presenting with a sudden onset of abdominal pain associated with vomiting. He was admitted for conservative management once the CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed partial small bowel obstruction with no signs of bowel perforation or ischemia. However, the next day, the patient had a cardiac arrest thought to be secondary to respiratory arrest. Th

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy and the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide. GBS classically presents with acute, progressive, ascending weakness, reduced to absent reflexes, and albuminocytological dissociation on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Botulism is a neurotoxin-mediated acute descending flaccid paralysis with cranial nerve palsies and dysautonomia. Botulism in adults is caused by ingestion/inhalation of botulinum toxin or wound infection with Clostridium botulinum. Both GBS and botulism can rapidly precipitate respirat

BACKGROUND: Botulism is a low incidence but potentially fatal infectious disease caused by neurotoxins produced mainly by Clostridium botulinum. There are different routes of acquisition, food-borne and infant/intestinal being the most frequent presentation, and antitoxin is the treatment of choice in all cases. In Spain, botulism is under surveillance, and case reporting is mandatory.
METHODS: This retrospective study attempts to provide a more complete picture of the epidemiology of botulism in Spain from 1997 to 2019 and an assessment of the treatment, including the relationship between a

Botulinum toxin is an egzotoxin produced by Gram positive bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It is among the most potent toxins known. The 3 main clinical presentations of botulism are as follows: foodborne botulism, infant botulism and wound botulism. The main symptom of intoxication is flat muscles paralysis. The treatment is supportive care and administration of antitoxin. In prevention the correct preparing of canned food is most important. Botulinum toxin is accepted as a biological weapon.

In June 2008, three Dutch tourists participating in a mini-cruise in Turkey needed urgent repatriation for antitoxin treatment because of symptoms of botulism. Because there was a shortage of antitoxin in the Netherlands, an emergency delivery was requested from the manufacturer in Germany. An outbreak investigation was initiated into all nine cruise members, eight of whom developed symptoms. C. botulinum type B was isolated in stool culture from four of them. No other patients were notified locally. Food histories revealed locally purchased unprocessed black olives, consumed on board of the s

Botulism antitoxin heptavalent (A, B, C, D, E, F, and G - Equine; BAT) product is a sterile solution of F(ab')2 and F(ab')2 -related antibody fragments prepared from plasma obtained from horses that have been immunized with a specific serotype of botulinum toxoid and toxin. BAT product is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic botulism following documented or suspected exposure to botulinum neurotoxin serotypes A to G in adults and pediatric patients. Pharmacokinetic and exposure-response models were used to explore the relationship between BAT product exposure and the probability of survi

BACKGROUND: The botulinum toxin is an extremely potent substance that impacts the nervous system. There has been a rise in cases of medical poisoning associated with it, particularly in the field of plastic and aesthetic procedures, in recent years.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old woman underwent a facial wrinkle reduction procedure with an unauthorized injection of 100 U of botulinum toxin at an unlicensed medical facility six days prior to hospitalization. Over time, her toxicity symptoms intensified, impacting her respiratory muscles, and she did not receive antitoxin treatment. She was co

Botulism is a life-threatening presynaptic disorder of the neuromuscular transmission produced by the neurotoxin elaborated by the botulinum neurotoxin-producing clostridia. We describe the management of a case series of 14 patients, members of 5 different families that were exposed to home-canned tuna and developed symptoms compatible with a mild clinical presentation of foodborne botulism. The electrophysiological study of the index case represented a reliable diagnostic test as it demonstrated a slight presynaptic dysfunction of the neuromuscular junction. Definite diagnosis was later confi
