Lower facial contouring with botulinum toxin type A.

The use of botulinum toxin (BoNT) is well established in medical practice. The application of BoNT extends over many indications such as strabismus, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, and others. Another indication for the use of BoNT type A is the masseteric muscle hypertrophy to obtain a lower facial contouring. Authors report the treatment of 5 patients with intramuscular injection of BoNT. A high degree of patient and physician satisfaction was noted after the treatment. Authors concluded that BoNT type A can safely be considered as a noninvasive drug treatment for patients with MMH.

Botulinum toxin type A in prophylactic treatment of migraine.

Current migraine preventive therapies are often unsatisfactory because of their limited efficacy, adverse effects, and drug interactions. An open-label, non-controlled study of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) suggested some benefits for patients with migraine. To assess the efficacy and safety of BTX-A, a randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled, parallel group study was conducted in 32 patients with a history of 2 to 8 migraine attacks per month, with or without aura. The patients were randomized to receive single administrations of 50-U BTX-A or vehicle injected into multiple sites of per

Novel cutaneous uses for botulinum toxin type A.

Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum which causes a flaccid muscle paralysis. It has been used extensively in the field of dermatology for the treatment of dynamic rhytides and in the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin has an excellent safety profile and few side effects when used for these purposes. Recently, botulinum toxin has also been used experimentally in a number of other dermatologic conditions with good results. These conditions include: persistent facial flushing, gustatory sweating and epiphora, anal fissures, familial beni

Treatment of compensatory hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin type A.

Compensatory hyperhidrosis is a common and potentially severe side effect of bilateral endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy. We describe a patient with severe compensatory hyperhidrosis as a result of this procedure. We treated the patient with 2 separate series of subcutaneous botulinum toxin type A injections to the right upper abdomen and achieved anhidrosis in 5 weeks. Although botulinum toxin is already an established treatment modality for primary hyperhidrosis, there is little experience using it for the treatment of compensatory hyperhidrosis. Because of its efficacy and low side-effect p

[Using botulinum toxin type A in the gastrointestinal tract].

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin (BTX) is an extremely potent poison which interacts selectively with cholinergic neurons to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters. Local intrasphincteric injection of BTX has been suggested as possible therapy for several spastic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. INDICATIONS: There is good evidence for the clinical benefit of BTX injection as an alternative treatment for achalasia and chronic anal fissures. Other possible indications for BTX injection such as sphincter of Oddi dyskinesia or cervical achalasia remain to be further established. BTX injectio

[Reimbursement strategies for botulinum toxin type A in Austria].

In the last two decades, botulinum toxin A (BtxA) has become the treatment of choice for spasmodic torticollis, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. Since 1999 Dysport and Botox are approved in Austria for the treatment of these indications. BtxA is applied in the hospital (out- and in-patient clinics) and by specialists (especially neurologists) in private practices. Complete reimbursement of the costs by the health insurance is provided only if the treatment has taken place in the specialist's private practice. The costs of BtxA application in the hospital are partially covered by the so call

Treatment of childhood myoclonus with botulinum toxin type A.

Because of inadequate response to or intolerable side effects of oral medication, nine patients with segmental, generalized, and focal myoclonus were treated with intramuscular botulinum toxin type A. All patients were evaluated with neuroimaging, routine and limb-monitored electroencephalography, electromyography, evoked potentials and appropriate biochemical studies. Patients were aged 2 to 22 years, with duration of myoclonus from 1 month to 10 years. Multiple medication trials included antiepileptic drugs, benzodiazepines, tryptophan, L-dopa/carbidopa, baclofen, and dantrolene. Patients we

The use of botulinum toxin type-B in the treatment of patients who have become unresponsive to botulinum toxin type-A -- initial experiences.

The increasing use of botulinum toxin type-A, especially for focal dystonia and spasticity has highlighted the issue of secondary non-responsiveness. Within the last few years botulinum toxin type-B (Myobloc/Neurobloc) has become commercially available as an alternative to type-A. This paper discusses our initial experience of botulinum toxin type-B in a total of 63 individuals who attended our botulinum clinic. Thirty-six patients had cervical dystonia and a secondary non-response to type-A toxin. Thirteen of these patients (36%) had a reasonable clinical response to Neurobloc and continue to

Commercial preparations and handling of botulinum toxin type A and type B.

The recognition of botulinum toxin as a therapeutic tool has revolutionized the approach to facial esthetics. In the 1970s, Dr. Alan B. Scott pioneered the use of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) for strabismus. This discovery led to further studies examining other clinical applications of BTX-A and, more recently, botulinum toxin type B (BTX-B). Despite its widespread use and the more than two decades of experience with BTX-A, controversy remains over the preparation and handling of the toxin.

BotB (botulinum toxin type B): evaluation of safety and tolerability in botulinum toxin type A-resistant cervical dystonia patients (preliminary study).

Botulinum toxin (BTX) injection is considered the treatment of choice for patients with cervical dystonia (torticollis). We conducted a pilot, open-label, dose-escalation study with BTX type B in 12 patients who no longer responded clinically to injections with BTX type A. At the doses tested, BTX type B was safe and well tolerated without evidence of dose-limiting toxicity in this patient population. Mild-to-moderate adverse events generally resolved quickly and included asthenia, pain, nausea, dysphagia, hypertonia, and tremor. No serious adverse events or antibodies to type-B treatment were

Scientific review of the aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin type A.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for temporary improvement of glabellar lines in patients 65 years and younger in 2002, and has also been used widely for aesthetic purposes such as hyperhidrosis, body shape contouring, and other noninvasive facial procedures. BoNT-A inhibits presynaptic exocytosis of acetylcholine (ACh)-containing vesicles into the neuromuscular junction at cholinergic nerve endings of the peripheral nervous system, thereby paralyzing skeletal muscles. ACh is the most broadly used neurotr

Correction of overactive bladder with botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A).

One of the most common dysfunction is overactive bladder. The clinical symptoms are associated with an involuntary contraction of the detrusor muscle of the urethra. Drugs are the basis of overactive bladder therapy. However, the duration of drug therapy is limited due to the frequent development of side effects. The study aimed to examine the efficacy of using botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in patients with overactive bladder. A total of 90 patients with overactive bladder (mean age 39.86 ± 3.47 years; 59 (65.6%) women and 31 (34.4%) men) divided into two groups (45 patients each) were examin

Botulinum toxin type A versus anticholinergics for cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2005. Cervical dystonia is the most common form of focal dystonia and is a highly disabling movement disorder, characterised by involuntary, usually painful, head posturing. Currently, botulinum toxin type A (BtA) is considered the first line therapy for this condition. Before BtA, anticholinergics were the most widely accepted treatment. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of BtA versus anticholinergic drugs in adults with cervical dystonia. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Movement Disor
