BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There are few reports in the literature of adverse effects resulting from massage therapy (MT) and no reports of brachial plexus injury (BPI) associated with MT. This case report describes an uncommon case of BPI that developed after a session of MT and reviews previously published reports of peripheral nerve injury following MT.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 58-year-old Asian woman developed sudden unilateral paralysis of her left shoulder girdle after a session of MT. A diagnosis of acute BPI was suspected due to her recent history and the results of several examinations. The

BACKGROUND: Obstetrical brachial plexus lesion (OBPL) (also known in its various forms as Erb's palsy, Klumpke's paralysis, Erb-Duchenne palsy) complicates a very small proportion of births. Furthermore, it seems that more likely many cases recover with little in the way of remaining deficit, but it is equally certain that some cases will not recover. Electro diagnostic examinations are used as following the physical examination and can provide data on both the severity and timing of the injury. The initial study usually is performed 2-3 weeks after injury, when signs of enervation are seen in

The main causes of brachial plexus palsies are traction, due to extreme movements, and heavy impact. In downward traction of the arm and forcible widening of the shoulder-neck angle the lesion will occur in the upper roots and trunk. Forcible upward traction will cause avulsion of T1 and C8. The most violent trauma will result in a lesion at all levels. Rupture of the cords and/or individual infraclavicular nerves will be produced by traction and/or forcible widening of the scapulohumeral angle. Vascular structures are subjected to the same mechanism and injuries of these structures give infor

Twenty-two patients with brachial plexus lesions were reviewed 3-6 years after microsurgical repair. Four patients underwent nerve transfer between intercostal nerves and the musculocutaneous nerve. None of these achieved useful elbow flexion. Nerve grafting mainly in the upper part of the plexus was performed in six patients of whom five recovered a useful motor function in at least one important area. Twelve patients underwent neurolysis; useful motor function in at least one important area was achieved in eight. We conclude that microsurgical treatment of brachial plexus lesions is useful i

Continuous axillary brachial plexus block was performed in 597 patients undergoing prolonged operations on the hand. The technique required placement of a 5 cm 23 gauge teflon intravenous catheter in the axillary perivascular sheath. Lidocaine 1.5 per cent or mepivicaine 1.5 per cent (20-40 ml) were used for the initial block dose. Surgery was completed in 77.2 per cent of patients (460) with the axillary block alone while in 19.1 per cent of patients (114) supplementary narcotic administration or additional regional blocks were required. In 3.7 per cent of patients (22) the technique was cons

Fifteen patients with radiation-induced brachial plexus paralysis were studied. Thirteen women had been treated for breast cancer. Two men developed symptoms and signs following radiation therapy for lung cancer. The brachial plexus paralysis initially was not static and progressed, but spontaneous arrest with permanent residual paralysis was seen in three patients. Three were noted to have intractable pain, but the major complaint of the remaining 12 was the inability to use their hand. The ten patients on whom an earlier operation directed at the brachial plexus had been performed were not r

OBJECTIVE: Although traumatic brachial plexus injuries are relatively rare in trauma patients, their effects on the functionality of the upper limb can be very disabling. The authors' objective was to assess the complications in a series of patients operated for brachial plexus injuries.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This was a retrospective evaluation of patients operated on by the authors between August 2009 and March 2013.
RESULTS: We performed 36 surgeries on 33 patients. The incidence of complications was 27.7%. Of these, only 1 (2.7%) was considered serious and associated with the procedure (ia

Most brachial plexus lesions are traction injuries sustained during birth, but in adolescents and older people they are usually caused by traffic accidents or following a fall in the home. A minority are the result of penetrating injury after civilian assault or trauma encountered during wartime. Birth palsy cases (obstetric brachial plexus palsy) and the remaining cases (traumatic briachial plexus palsy) are viewed differently with regard to treatment and outcome and so these two groups are usually discussed in separate chapters. In this paper we treat both groups in parallel because as far a

Adult traumatic brachial plexus injuries are devastating, and they are occurring with increasing frequency. Patient evaluation consists of a focused assessment of upper extremity sensory and motor function, radiologic studies, and, most important, preoperative and intraoperative electrodiagnostic studies. The critical concepts in surgical treatment are patient selection as well as the timing and prioritizing of restoration of function. Surgical techniques include neurolysis, nerve grafting, neurotization, and free muscle transfer. Results are variable, but increased knowledge of nerve injury a

Injury to the brachial plexus in the adult is usually a closed injury and the result of considerable traction to the shoulder. Brachial plexus injury in the adult is an increasingly common clinical problem. Recent advances in neurosurgical techniques have improved the outlook for patients with brachial plexus injuries. The choice of surgical procedure depends on the level of the injury and the radiologist has an important role in guiding the surgeon to the site of injury. This article will describe the anatomy and pathophysiology of traction brachial plexus injury in the adult. The neurosurgic

The second part of this review examines the use of recombinant interferon-alpha (rIFNalpha) in the following solid tumours: superficial bladder cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, lung cancer, mesothelioma and ovarian, breast and cervical malignancies. In superficial bladder cancer, intravesical rIFNalpha has a promising role as second-line therapy in patients resistant or intolerant to intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG). In HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma, rIFNalpha is active as monotherapy and in combination with antiretroviral agents, especially

According to the literature, in Europe 0.4-1.2 cases of obstetrical plexus brachial paresis occur per 1000 births. A 4-6 times higher energy in axial delivery of the newborn leads to a neurotmesis of the plexus. If the energy used is more than 10 times higher, root avulsion occur. Early operative therapy for obstetrical plexus paresis is mandatory. The best period for an operation is between the 3rd and 6th months of age. CT and MRI imaging as well as electrophysiological investigations are of the utmost importance. Birch, Gilbert and Gu think there is an indication for operation if no active

The authors reviewed 62 neurotizations of the brachial plexus in 71 patients performed between 1974 and 1989. The nerves used were the accessory, the motor or sensory branches of the cervical plexus, and the intercostals. Twenty-five suprascapular nerves, 19 musculocutaneous, 4 medial roots of the median nerve, and 12 lateral roots of the median nerve were neurotized. The authors concluded that useful results can be achieved using extraplexual neurotizations.

From this review, the following points have emerged: 1. The typical obstetrical palsy is a traumatic lesion caused by forced lowering of the shoulder during delivery. 2. While the lesion may affect all the roots, the upper roots are usually ruptured, whereas the lower roots (if involved) are always avulsed. 3. Spontaneous recovery is possible, but its quality depends on how early recovery of previously paralyzed muscles begins. If the biceps have not started to recover by 3 months, the final result will be poor. It is at this time interval that a surgical decision should be made. 4. Surgical r

Sixty-six brachial plexus palsies in 64 patients were retrospectively reviewed at the San Francisco Unit of the Shriners Hospital system in a 15-year period from 1973 to 1988. All patients were referred with persistent brachial plexus palsies caused by birth trauma. The distribution of palsies at birth included 34 upper palsies, three lower palsies, and 29 mixed (or global) palsies. At final follow-up, the distribution of palsies had shifted and included 42 upper palsies, 6 lower palsies, and 14 mixed (or global) palsies. One patient had a persistent flail upper extremity. Many previously docu

A newborn had a combination of brachial plexus palsy and phrenic nerve palsy associated with a small left arm, deformed ribs on the left, and an area of subcutaneous calcification on the left side of the neck. These lesions represent a deformation syndrome due to uterine constraint in a bicornuate uterus. Appropriate diagnosis can initiate management to avoid problems in subsequent pregnancies.

PURPOSE: To compare two populations of brachial plexus palsies, one neonatal (NBPP) and the other traumatic (NNBPP) who underwent different nerve transfers, using the plasticity grading scale (PGS) for detecting differences in brain plasticity between both groups.
METHODS: To be included, all patients had to have undergone a nerve transfer as the unique procedure to recover one lost function. The primary outcome was the PGS score. We also assessed patient compliance to rehabilitation using the rehabilitation quality scale (RQS). Statistical analysis of all variables was performed. A p ≤ 0.050
