[An autopsy case of pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma of the lung complicated with brain stem infarction due to nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis].

A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for back, left shoulder and upper limb pain. Chest radiography and CT on admission revealed right pleural effusion and a focal plate-like thickening of the major fissure. Pleural effusion cytology revealed adenocarcinoma, which was diagnosed as non-small-cell lung cancer with bone metastasis. The patient suffered from DIC, melena and multiple cerebral infarctions during chemotherapy and died on the eighth day of the second course of chemotherapy. Autopsy revealed a pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma covering the pleura of the right middle lobe,

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells markedly attenuate brain infarct size and improve neurological function in rats.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) on brain infarction area (BIA) and neurological status in a rat model of acute ischemic stroke (IS) was investigated. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (n = 30) were divided into IS plus intra-venous 1 mL saline (at 0, 12 and 24 h after IS induction) (control group) and IS plus intra-venous ADMSCs (2.0 x 106) (treated interval as controls) (treatment group) after occlusion of distal left internal carotid artery. The rats were sacrificed and brain tissues were harvested on day 21 after the procedur

'Iatrogenic' brain stem infarction. A complication of x-ray examination of the cervical spine and following posterior tamponation of the nose.

Two patients sustained an ischemic brain stem infarction during medical examination and treatment. The first patient lost consciousness and the spontaneous respiration ceased during X-ray examination of the cervical spine when the neck was hyperextended. After some minutes he regained conciousness but was found to be tetraplegic, and the patient deceased 4 months later. The angiogram revealed thrombosis of the basilar artery. The other patient had profuse nosebleed and was treated with posterior tamponation during which she sat for about 10 min with the neck hyperextended. Some hours after thi

Comparison between the effect of human Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells and levetiracetam on brain infarcts in rats.

BACKGROUND: Stroke represents one of the major causes of death worldwide. Neuroprotection remains an important goal of stroke therapy. Stem cell therapeutic effect is attributed to the neuroprotective effect and the regulation of the oxidant stress. Levetiracetam (LEV), a second-generation antiepileptic drug, was reported to confer neuronal protection after cerebral ischemia reperfusion. AIM: To investigate the effect of human Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) and LEV on the size of brain infarcts, the histological structure, the neurotrophic, and the antioxidant gene e

Stroke Induces Mesenchymal Stem Cell Migration to Infarcted Brain Areas Via CXCR4 and C-Met Signaling.

Mesenchymal stem cells circulate between organs to repair and maintain tissues. Mesenchymal stem cells cultured with fetal bovine serum have therapeutic effects when intravenously administered after stroke. However, only a small number of mesenchymal stem cells reach the brain. We hypothesized that the serum from stroke patients increases mesenchymal stem cells trophism toward the infarcted brain area. Mesenchymal stem cells were grown in fetal bovine serum, normal serum from normal rats, or stroke serum from ischemic stroke rats. Compared to the fetal bovine serum group, the stroke serum grou

[Vertebrobasilar artery dissection with subarachnoid hemorrhage after brain stem infarct showing an improvement on angiography: case report].

A 66-year-old male presented with dysarthria and right hemiparesis. Cerebral angiography at onset showed obliteration of the basilar artery and dilatation in the left vertebral artery. The patient's clinical symptoms were exaggerated and he was finally diagnosed to as suffering locked-in syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a brain stem infarction from the pons to the left middle cerebellar peduncle. We determined that the patient suffered dissection of the left vertebral artery at the basilar artery and treated, using the conservative therapy him of strict blood pressure control. A sec

Homing of neural stem cells from the venous compartment into a brain infarct does not involve conventional interactions with vascular endothelium.

Human neural stem cells (hNSCs) hold great potential for treatment of a wide variety of neurodegenerative and neurotraumatic conditions. Heretofore, administration has been through intracranial injection or implantation of cells. Because neural stem cells are capable of migrating to the injured brain from the intravascular space, it seemed feasible to administer them intravenously if their ability to circumvent the blood-brain barrier was enhanced. In the present studies, we found that interactions of hNSCs in vitro on the luminal surface of human umbilical vein endothelial cells was enhanced

Transient mutism resolving into cerebellar speech after brain stem infarction following a traumatic injury of the vertebral artery in a child.

A 3.7-year-old girl presented with an anterior neck injury followed by progressive subcutaneous emphysema and loss of consciousness. After resuscitation, a laceration on the first tracheal cartilage was closed surgically. As she was extubated one week later, she was found to have right hemiplegia and muteness. MRI showed a T2-bright lesion on the tegmentum of the left midbrain down to the upper pons. Right vertebral angiography disclosed an intimal flap with stenosis at the C3 vertebral level presumably caused by a fracture of the right C3 transverse process later confirmed in a cervical 3D-CT

Monitoring therapeutic efficacy of decompressive craniotomy in space occupying cerebellar infarcts using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) have been used to gauge effects of brain-stem dysfunction in humans and animal models. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of BAEP in monitoring patients undergoing decompressive surgery of the posterior fossa for space occupying cerebellar infarcts. We report on serial BAEP recordings in 11 comatose patients with space occupying cerebellar infarcts undergoing decompressive craniotomy. BAEP studies were performed within 12 h after admission, 24 h following surgery and prior to extubation. BAEP signals were analyzed using latenc

Successful treatment of pulmonary aspiration due to brain stem infarction by using cough exercise based on swallowing scintigraphy: preliminary observations.

Although dysphagia in stroke may result in lethal chest infection, it can be prevented by coughing. We report on a patient with dysphagia and aspiration who regained oral ingestion by swallowing with voluntary cough. A 54-year-old man with subarachnoidal hemorrhage underwent endovascular coiling and developed brain stem infarction. Scintigraphy showed pulmonary aspiration just after swallowing, but no radioactivity was detected in the lungs 10 min after swallowing with voluntary cough. Swallowing exercise with voluntary cough resulted in a safe swallow without enteral feeding. Even if laryngea

Brain Stem Infarction Due to Basilar Artery Dissection in a Patient with Moyamoya Disease Four Years after Successful Bilateral Revascularization Surgeries.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare cerebrovascular disease with an unknown etiology and is characterized by intrinsic fragility in the intracranial vascular walls such as the affected internal elastic lamina and thinning medial layer. The association of MMD with intracranial arterial dissection is extremely rare, whereas that with basilar artery dissection (BAD) has not been reported previously. A 46-year-old woman developed brain stem infarction due to BAD 4 years after successful bilateral superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis with indirect pial synangiosis for ischemi

Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy effectively reduced brain infarct volume and preserved neurological function in rat after acute intracranial hemorrhage.

We tested the hypothesis that human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cell (iPSC-MSC) therapy could effectively reduce brain-infarct volume (BIV) and improve neurological function in rat after acute intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) induced by a weight-drop device. Adult-male SD rats (n=40) were equally divided into group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (ICH), group 3 (ICH + hyaluronic acid (HA)/intracranial injection at 3 h after ICH), group 4 [ICH + HA + iPSC-MSC (1.2 × 106 cells/intracranial injection at 3 h after ICH)] and euthanized by day 28 after ICH procedure. Fatal outcome after brain stem infarction related to bilateral vertebral artery occlusion - case report of a detrimental complication of cervical spine trauma.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral artery injury (VAI) after blunt cervical trauma occurs more frequently than historically believed. The symptoms due to vertebral artery (VA) occlusion usually manifest within the first 24 hours after trauma. Misdiagnosed VAI or delay in diagnosis has been reported to cause acute deterioration of previously conscious and neurologically intact patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67 year-old male was involved in a motor vehicle crash (MVC) sustaining multiple injuries. Initial evaluation by the emergency medical response team revealed that he was alert, oriented, and neurologica

Bilateral cerebellar and brain stem infarction resulting from vertebral artery injury following cervical trauma without radiographic damage of the spinal column: a case report.

Vertebral artery injury can be a complication of cervical spine injury. Although most cases are asymptomatic, the rare case progresses to severe neurological impairment and fatal outcomes. We experienced a case of bilateral cerebellar and brain stem infarction with fatal outcome resulting from vertebral artery injury associated with cervical spine trauma. A 69-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of tetraplegia after falling down the stairs and hitting his head on the floor. Marked bony damage of the cervical spine was not apparent on radiographs and CT scans, so the injury was i

Intravenous Administration of Human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Subacute Phase of Cerebral Infarction in a Mouse Model Ameliorates Neurological Disturbance by Suppressing Blood Brain Barrier Disruption and Apoptosis via Immunomodulation.

Neuro-inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of brain infarction. Cell therapy offers a novel therapeutic option due to its effect on immunomodulatory effects. Amniotic stem cells, in particular, show promise owing to their low immunogenicity, tumorigenicity, and easy availability from amniotic membranes discarded following birth. We have successfully isolated and expanded human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs). Herein, we evaluated the therapeutic effect of hAMSCs on neurological deficits after brain infarction as well as their immunomodulatory effects in a mouse model i
