Simultaneous kidney-parathyroid allotransplantation from a single donor after 20 years of tetany: a case report.

Persistent hypocalcemia after total parathyroidectomy and autotransplantation is rare and occasionally has been treated using allotransplantation of parathyroid tissue. We present the case of a 32-year-old woman with terminal renal failure who at age 5 years underwent a first renal transplantation from a brain-dead donor. The graft was lost as a result of acute rejection. Tertiary hypoparathyroidism developed, which was treated with total parathyroidectomy and implantation in the forearm of a standardized amount of parathyroid tissue. The graft failed, and hypoparathyroidism developed. Despite

Nerve repair and behavioral recovery following brain transplantation in Notoplana acticola, a polyclad flatworm.

Although Notoplana acticola, a marine polyclad, cannot regenerate brain tissue, neuronal repair is rapid. Brains were transplanted into decerebrate flatworms to determine the anatomical patterns and functionality of neural connections established between a new brain and the peripheral nerve network of the recipient animal. Sixty-nine transplants were performed. Four brain transplant orientations were used: normal, reversed, inverted, and reversed inverted. The functionality of the transplanted brains was tested and measured using both behavioral and electrophysiological criteria. Within 23 day

Effects of Neural Stem Cell and Olfactory Ensheathing Cell Co-transplants on Tissue Remodelling After Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Adult Rat.

Effective transplant-mediated repair of ischemic brain lesions entails extensive tissue remodeling, especially in the ischemic core. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are promising reparative candidates for stroke induced lesions, however, their survival and integration with the host-tissue post-transplantation is poor. In this study, we address this challenge by testing whether co-grafting of NSCs with olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs), a special type of glia with proven neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and angiogenic effects, can promote graft survival and host tissue remodelling. Transient focal

Intra-arterial bone marrow mononuclear cell distribution in experimental global brain ischaemia.

OBJECTIVES: Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) can ameliorate focal ischaemic brain injury. A global ischaemic brain injury, which can occur after cardiac or thoracic surgery, could be an essential target for BM-MNCs. No studies using BM-MNCs for this indication have been conducted. DESIGN: Ten porcine underwent a global normothermic ischaemic insult, followed by an intra-arterial injection of Technetium(99m)-HMPAO-labelled BM-MNCs after 2, 4, 6, 12 or 24 hours. A whole-body scan and a SPECT/CT were performed 2 hours after the injection. Severity of the injury was assessed with EEG and t

Therapeutic effects of various methods of MSC transplantation on cerebral resuscitation following cardiac arrest in rats.

In the present study, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were transplanted into the brain of rats following cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by three different methods: Direct stereotaxic injection into the lateral cerebral ventricle (LV), intra‑carotid administration (A), and femoral venous infusion (V). The three different methods were compared by observing the effects of MSCs on neurological function following global cerebral hypoxia‑ischemia, in order to determine the optimum method for MSC transplantation. MSCs were transplanted in groups A, V and LV following the restoration of spontaneous

Iatrogenic Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy after Cadaveric Dura Mater Transplantation to an Intact Brain Surface: A Case Report.

Iatrogenic cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a rare yet clinically relevant condition that may develop decades after cadaveric dura mater transplantation. We present the case of a 48-year-old man who experienced recurrent, bilateral, multilobar intracerebral hemorrhages approximately 40 years after childhood dura mater transplantation. Pathological examination confirmed amyloid β protein deposition around small cerebral blood vessels in the brain parenchyma. Genetic testing excluded mutations associated with hereditary cerebral amyloid angiopathy. According to the patient's operative record, at a

[Neurosurgical methods in treatment of Parkinson disease. Current status].

There is a world-wide renaissance of neurosurgical treatments of Parkinson's disease (PD), based on substantial progress in basic sciences. A model of parallel motor circuitry has identified potential targets for lesioning by clarifying the pathophysiological role of the basal ganglia in PD. The internal globus pallidus (Gpi) is an essential player as it connects to thalamocortical projections and can be disinhibited by overactivity of the nucleus subthalamicus (Nst). Lesioning of these targets has been successful in MPTP damaged primates. There is clinical use of destructive as well as restor

Cerebral organoids transplantation repairs infarcted cortex and restores impaired function after stroke.

Stroke usually causes prolonged or lifelong disability, owing to the permanent loss of infarcted tissue. Although a variety of stem cell transplantation has been explored to improve neuronal defect behavior by enhancing neuroplasticity, it remains unknown whether the infarcted tissue can be reconstructed. We here cultured human cerebral organoids derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and transplanted them into the junction of the infarct core and the peri-infarct zone of NOD-SCID mice subjected to stroke. Months later, we found that the grafted organoids survived well in the infarc

Presence of tau pathology within foetal neural allografts in patients with Huntington's and Parkinson's disease.

Cell replacement has been explored as a therapeutic strategy to repair the brain in patients with Huntington's and Parkinson's disease. Post-mortem evaluations of healthy grafted tissue in such cases have revealed the development of Huntington- or Parkinson-like pathology including mutant huntingtin aggregates and Lewy bodies. An outstanding question remains if tau pathology can also be seen in patients with Huntington's and Parkinson's disease who had received foetal neural allografts. This was addressed by immunohistochemical/immunofluorescent stainings performed on grafted tissue of two Hun

[From carbonmonoxide intoxication to organ donation; organ protective mechanic ventilation in severe pulmonary damage].

Organ donation is a matter of concern in critically ill patients who need intensive care after carbonmonoxide (CO) intoxication. A 26-year-old female patient was unconscious after having spent 20 minutes in the bathroom with a water heater (70% butane and 30% propane mixture). In the CT of the patient with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) 3, ventricular system was erased, white-gray matter separation was lost and fissures were observed as erased. Torax CT showed conspicuous areas showing air bronchograms in both lung bases and posterior areas and diffuse frosted glass densities in other areas. In a pa

A cross-circulated bicephalic model of head transplantation.

AIMS: A successful cephalosomatic anastomosis ("head transplant") requires, among others, the ability to control long-term immune rejection and avoidance of ischemic events during the head transference phase. We developed a bicephalic model of head transplantation to study these aspects. METHODS AND RESULTS: The thoracic aorta and superior vena cava of a donor rat were anastomosed with the carotid artery and extracorporeal veins of a recipient rat by vascular grafts. Before thoracotomy in the donor rat, the axillary artery and vein of the donor were connected to the carotid and the extracrani

Late-Onset Central Nervous System Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder After Lung Transplantation:A Case Report.

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is caused by uncontrolled proliferation of lymphoid cells after a hematopoietic stem cell or solid organ transplant procedure related to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. A primary central nervous system (CNS) PTLD (CNS-PTLD) is rare and important to distinguish from an intracranial lesion after transplantation. A 66-year-old man with pulmonary arterial hypertension who underwent living-donor lung transplantation 9 years prior noticed disorientation regarding route and dates. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple white matte

Clinical neurotransplantation protocol for Huntington's and Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE: The concept of transplantation of neuronal cells to treat Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases is based on the proven principle that dopaminergic and GABA-ergic progenitor neurons (from the human developing ventral mesencephalon and whole ganglionic eminence) can survive, differentiate and functionally integrate into an allogenic host brain. However, several donor and host-specific variables play a major role in the safety and outcome of this procedure. In this paper, we seek to summarize an updated neural transplantation protocol, based on our institutional experience and many years

Mutant huntingtin is present in neuronal grafts in Huntington disease patients.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington disease (HD) is caused by a genetically encoded pathological protein (mutant huntingtin [mHtt]), which is thought to exert its effects in a cell-autonomous manner. Here, we tested the hypothesis that mHtt is capable of spreading within cerebral tissue by examining genetically unrelated fetal neural allografts within the brains of patients with advancing HD. METHODS: The presence of mHtt aggregates within the grafted tissue was confirmed using 3 different types of microscopy (bright-field, fluorescence, and electron), 2 additional techniques consisting of Western immunobl

Transplants of embryonic motoneurones to adult spinal cord: survival and innervation abilities.

One goal of transplantation experiments involving damaged spinal cords is to reconstruct a functional innervation to muscles in the periphery. Embryonic spinal cord grafts have been shown to survive transplantation into adult spinal cord lacking motoneurones. Motoneurones from the graft appear to be able to innervate muscle tissue by being encouraged to grow across a bridge of peripheral nerve. Integration of grafted motoneurones appears to involve their migration from the graft into the host ventral horn, thus replacing depleted host neurones. These results suggest possible strategies of rese

Cladophialophora bantiana and Nocardia farcinica infection simultaneously occurring in a kidney transplant recipient: Case report and literature review.

Solid organ transplant recipients are at increased risk of acquiring devastating infections with unusual pathogens. Nocardia are aerobic actinomycetes that affect the lungs, brain, skin and soft tissue. Cladophialophora species are dematiaceous fungi that overwhelmingly cause infections in the brain. Both organisms carry a high mortality rate. We present the first reported renal transplant case with Cladophialophora bantiana involving the renal allograft with concurrent invasive nocardiosis involving the lungs and brain.
