Ultraschall in der Medizin (Stuttgart, Germany : 1980)2015eng
Purpose: Objective Shear wave elastography (SWE) enabled living tissue assessment of stiffness. This is routinely used for breast, thyroid and liver diseases, but there is currently no data for the brain. We aim to characterize elasticity of normal brain parenchyma and brain tumors using SWE. Materials and Methods: Patients with scheduled brain tumor removal were included in this study. In addition to standard ultrasonography, intraoperative SWE using an ultrafast ultrasonic device was used to measure the elasticity of each tumor and its surrounding normal brain. Data were collected by an inve

Exposure to a blast wave generated during an explosion may result in brain damage and related neurological impairments. Several mechanisms by which the primary blast wave can damage the brain have been proposed, including: (1) a direct effect of the shock wave on the brain causing tissue damage by skull flexure and propagation of stress and shear forces; and (2) an indirect transfer of kinetic energy from the blast, through large blood vessels and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), to the central nervous system. To address a basic question related to the mechanisms of blast brain injury, pressure was

An estimate of the traveling wave velocity (TWV) was evaluated in 18 young adults to determine the technique's applicability as a possible tool in evaluating Meniere's disease. This TWV estimation uses a derived auditory brain stem response procedure requiring high-intensity masking. The results indicate that on average, TWVs were similar to those obtained via psychophysical measures or electrocochleography. However, instances of undermasking, due to subjects' intolerance, resulted in a number of subjects exhibiting faster than expected TWVs.

Excitotoxicity plays a central role in the neuronal damage during ischemic stroke. Although growing evidence suggests that activation of extrasynaptic NMDA receptors initiates neuronal death, no direct evidence demonstrated their activation during ischemia. Using rat hippocampal slices, we detected oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) induced slow inward currents (SICs) mediated by extrasynaptic NMDA receptors in CA1 pyramidal neurons. Moreover, Ca(2+) chelator BAPTA dialysis into astrocytic network decreased the frequency of OGD induced SICs, indicating that the activation of extrasynaptic NMDA r

OBJECT: Shock waves have been experimentally applied to various neurosurgical treatments including fragmentation of cerebral emboli, perforation of cyst walls or tissue, and delivery of drugs into cells. Nevertheless, the application of shock waves to clinical neurosurgery remains challenging because the threshold for shock wave-induced brain injury has not been determined. The authors investigated the pressure-dependent effect of shock waves on histological changes of rat brain, focusing especially on apoptosis.
METHODS: Adult male rats were exposed to a single shot of shock waves (produced

Treatment-resistant late -life depression (TRLLD) is a major public health challenge, as older individuals present with suboptimal or partial responses to frontline therapeutic options. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is a well-validated preclinical paradigm that recapitulates the complex neurobiological changes and clinical symptomatology of major depression. Here, we elucidate the influence of pregabalin (PRG; 10 mg/kg) and vitamin B12 (B12; 40 µg/kg) combination on neurobiological correlates of LLD such as slow vs. fast brain rhythms, affective behavior, and oxidative stress in mal

AIM: The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of sonic wave vibration (SWV) on mood, the autonomic-nervous system, brain function and cognitive function in elderly people.
METHODS: We randomly assigned 24 late-stage elderly people (M 88.0±5.0 yrs) into a SWV group and a control group. The SWV group conducted 10 minutes of SWV per day, 5 days a week for 8 consecutive weeks. For evaluation purposes, we analyzed the moods with TDMS, heart rate variability (HRV), resting energy expenditure (REE), and brain activation during the Stroop test using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

Purpose Primary blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is the least understood of the four phases of blast injury. Distant injury induced by the blast wave, on the opposite side from the wave entry, is not well understood. This study investigated the mechanism of distant injury in bTBI. Materials and Methods Eight 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: group 1 served as the control group and did not receive any shock wave (SW) exposure; group 2 was exposed to SWs (12.5 ± 2.5 MPa). Propagation of SWs within a brain phantom was evaluated by visualization, pressure

BACKGROUND: Addiction is one of the most common psychiatric disorders and is closely related to depression and anxiety disorders. The presence of these disorders makes the process of addiction treatment difficult. Binaural beats are the representation and perception of a stimulus that does not exist in the outside world but is the brain's mental perception error of a virtual third sound, that is, the slight frequency difference between the two sounds.
METHODS: The present study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of brain synchronization using binaural beats in the theta band on depress

A central objective in the study of volition has been to identify how changes in neural activity relate to voluntary-"free will"-movement. The readiness potential (RP) is observed in the EEG as a slow-building signal that precedes action onset. Many consider the RP as a marker of an underlying preparatory process for initiating voluntary movement. However, the RP may emerge from ongoing slow-wave brain oscillations that influence the timing of movement initiation in a phase-dependent manner. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) enables brain oscillations to be entrained at the f

The ventricles of the brain remain perhaps the largest anatomic structure in the human body without established primary purpose, even though their existence has been known at least since described by Aristotle. We hypothesize that the ventricles help match a stroke volume of arterial blood that arrives into the rigid cranium with an equivalent volume of ejected venous blood by spatially configuring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to act as a low viscosity relay medium for arteriovenous pulse wave (PW) phase coupling. We probe the hypothesis by comparing the spatiotemporal behavior of vascular PW abo

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative EEG features have been identified as surrogates and predictors of cognitive decline/dementia, a common feature of progressive PD. The biochemical correlates for altered quantitative EEG features are unknown. Our primary objective was to test the hypothesis that quantitative EEG measures correlate with cortical levels of phosphorylated α-synuclein, a modified form of the synaptic protein α-synuclein, in PD cases, in contrast to other pathology-associated proteins. A secondary objective was to explore the same correlations among cellular fractions of these proteins.

Slowing of brain activity observed in electroencephalography (EEG) recordings is normal under resting conditions such as sleep. However, a recent series of studies described a new pattern of cortical slowing in patients with epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease, consisting of transient paroxysmal slowing of the network. These paroxysmal slow wave events (PSWEs) were defined with median power frequency (MPF) less than 6 Hz and duration longer than 5 s. In this research, we are using clinical EEG recordings from the Temple University and Bonn University databases. We aim to: (1) Characterize the tem

INTRODUCTION: Research evidence indicates that maladaptive reorganization of the brain plays a critical role in amplifying pain experiences and pain chronification; however, no clear evidence of change exists in brain wave activity among patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). The objective of this study was to assess brain wave activity in patients with CLBP, compared to healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with CLBP and twenty-four healthy controls participated in the study. A quantitative electroencephalography device was used to assess brain wave activity in eyes-open and e

Although blast-induced traumatic brain injury (b-TBI) is well recognized for its significance in the military population, the unique mechanisms of primary b-TBI remain undefined. The aim of the present study is to unveil the mechanism of the traumatic brain injury induced by the shock wave using the energy assessment method. First, the magnetic resonance images of the human head were processed to establish the finite element (FE) model of the human head including the skin, the skull, the brain and other structures. The simulation of the shock wave was implemented using the Coupled Eulerian-Lag

The frequency spectrum of the CSF pulse wave and amplitude transfer function from arterial to CSF pressure were estimated in the lateral ventricle and cisterna magna during the course of supratentorial epidural compression of brain in anaesthetised ventilated cats. Ventricular fluid pressure, the amplitude of spectral components of the CSF pulse and the amplitude of transfer function in the supratentorial compartment were increased in an exponential manner as epidural compression advanced. A transtentorial pressure gradient developed when epidural compression exceeded a critical level. Conduct

We report on a patient suffering a spontaneous hemorrhage primarily located in the right brain-stem; surgical correction of this led to a substantial improvement in clinical deficits. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded on postoperative days 18, 30, 55 and 205. Waves II through V were initially undetectable on stimulation of the damaged side, whereas the absence of peak V was the only abnormality seen on left-side stimulation. With the regression of the right lower mid-pontine deficits, the right waves gradually reappeared and normalized progressively. On the last recor

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects not only memory and cognition but also the body's automatic functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure. These changes reflect the early disruption of the central autonomic network, the system that links the brain and the heart to maintain physiological balance. Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the brain's electrical activity and reveals patterns of cortical slowing and desynchronization, while heart-rate variability (HRV) reflects how flexibly the heart responds to internal and external demands. This narrative review brings together evidence publishe

The authors present a comparative analysis of the characteristics of the V wave of the brain stem auditory evoked potentials in relation to the degree of transverse shifting of the third ventricle. The investigations were carried out in 48 patients with non-traumatic intracerebral haematoma. A high correlation was found between the size of the amplitude and ventricle shift. No such correlation was observed with the interpeak time of the I--V waves.
