Mg deficiency affects leaf Mg remobilization and the proteome in Brassica napus.

In order to cope with variable mineral nutrient availability, higher plants have developed numerous strategies including the remobilization of nutrients from source to sink tissues. However, such processes remain relatively unknown for magnesium (Mg), which is the third most important cation in plant tissues. Using Mg depletion of Brassica napus, we have demonstrated that Mg is remobilized from old leaves to young shoot tissues. Moreover, this study showed that Mg depletion induces modification of nutrient uptake, especially Zn and Mn. Finally, comparative proteomic analysis of old leaves (sou

Analysis and Antioxidant Activity of Extracts from Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) Sprouts.

Samples prepared from fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L.) sprouts by water distillation or freeze-drying were examined for antioxidant activity using three assays. All samples exhibited dose-dependent antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity ranged from 74.48 ± 0.46% (less volatile sample) to 93.2 ± 0.2% (dichloromethane extract sample) at the level of 500 μg/mL. Both dichloromethane extract samples from a water distillate of broccoli sprouts and freeze-dried broccoli sprouts showed potent antioxidant activity, which was comparable to that of BHT. Among the 43 compounds positively iden

Variations in chromium tolerance and accumulation among canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivars.

Phytoremediation is a green technology for the remediation of contaminated ecosystems by using plants. In the present study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the phytoremediation potential of eight canola (Brassica napus L.) cultivars for hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Chromium significantly affected dry weight, lipid peroxidation, chlorophylls, non-protein thiol and antioxidant enzymes. Based on the dry weight, the tolerance index was found maximum in cultivar (cv.) NK Petrol and minimum in cv. Sary. The cv. Sary accumulated the maximum amount of Cr (705.8 μg g(-1) DW), whi

Leaf senescence in Brassica napus: expression of genes encoding pathogenesis-related proteins.

Genes that are expressed during leaf senescence in Brassica napus were identified by the isolation of representative cDNA clones. DNA sequence and deduced protein sequence from two senescence-related cDNAs, LSC94 and LSC222, representing genes that are expressed early in leaf senescence before any yellowing of the leaves is visible, showed similarities to genes for pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins: a PR-1a-like protein and a class IV chitinase, respectively. The LSC94 and LSC222 genes showed differential regulation with respect to each other; an increase in expression was detected at differe

In planta storage of boron and calcium affects clubroot severity in Brassica napus.

Boron (B) and calcium (Ca) are essential nutrients for plant growth that have also been reported to reduce clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae. This study evaluated the effects of soil-applied B (0, 8 or 16 kg B ha-1) and Ca (0, 500 or 1000 kg Ca ha-1) on clubroot development in Brassica napus lines differing in B sensitivity, and investigated underlying mechanisms. Ca consistently reduced clubroot severity, whereas B had a weaker, inconsistent effect and caused phytotoxicity at higher rates. Ca also alleviated B toxicity and increased shoot biomass under high B conditions. Fou

Enhancement of tolerance of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) to mercury by carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a hazardous gaseous molecule, whose concentration in atmosphere is recently rising. CO also is an endogenous regulator of a variety of biological processes in animals and plants. However, whether CO regulates plant adaptation to Hg-contaminated environments is unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of CO on biological responses of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), a plant species frequently used for heavy metal accumulation, to mercury (Hg) toxicity. Exposure of B. juncea to Hg(II) triggered production of O(2)(-) and H(2)O(2) as well as peroxides. However, s

BnaC03.MYB56 and BnaA09.MYB61 antagonistically regulate flavonoid metabolism in Brassica napus.

Flavonoid biosynthesis is negatively correlated with seed oil content in B. napus. However, the molecular mechanisms of flavonoid metabolism mediated by MYB repressor in B. napus are still not well understood. In this study, we identify an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, BnaC03.MYB56, which regulates flavonoid metabolism and oil content in B. napus. Overexpression of BnaC03.MYB56 reduced flavonoid metabolite levels and significantly increased seed oil content by 11.0%-11.4% compared to the wild-type, whereas the mutant lines exhibited the opposite phenotype. BnaC03.MYB56 directly binds to the "

Chitosan encapsulated S-nitrosoglutathione is an efficient nanodonor in Brassica napus seedlings.

Nitric oxide (NO) supplementation promotes plant development and stress endurance. To overcome the stability and toxicity issues of conventional NO donors, nanoencapsulation may offer a solution. This study used a model system in which 5-day-old Brassica napus L. seedlings were exposed via their root system for 2 h with either bulk S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), chitosan-encapsulated GSNO nanoparticles (GSNO-CHT NPs), or empty chitosan nanoparticles (CHT NPs), at concentrations of 250 and 500 μM. Nanoparticle-associated cell wall modifications of the seedlings' roots and rhizosphere acidificatio

Heat stress-induced sterility in oilseed crops: a focus on Brassica napus.

Under changing climate conditions, heat stress (HS) severely impacts the sustainability of oil crops, particularly Brassica species. HS disrupts the growth and development of reproductive organs, leading to sterility, smaller stamens, abnormal spore development, and aberrant ovules. Consequently, yield and oil content in Brassica species, especially B. rapa, B. napus, and B. juncea, are significantly reduced, with B. napus being particularly vulnerable and unable to recover from heat shock. To counteract these effects, Brassica species have evolved various mechanisms, including the abscisic ac

Do native and invasive herbivores have an effect on Brassica rapa pollination?

Mutualistic (e.g. pollination) and antagonistic (e.g. herbivory) plant-insect interactions shape levels of plant fitness and can have interactive effects. By using experimental plots of Brassica rapa plants infested with generalist (Mamestra brassicae) and specialised (Pieris brassicae) native herbivores and with a generalist invasive (Spodoptera littoralis) herbivore, we estimated both pollen movement among treatments and the visiting behaviour of honeybees versus other wild pollinators. Overall, we found that herbivory has weak effects on plant pollen export, either in terms of inter-treatme

The Expanded SWEET Gene Family Following Whole Genome Triplication in Brassica rapa.

The SWEET family, which includes transcripts of a cohort of plant hexose and sucrose transporters, is considered key to improving crop stress tolerance and yield through its role in manipulating the carbohydrate partitioning process. The functions and regulatory roles of this gene family are variable among different species; thus, to determine these roles, more species-specific information is needed. Brassica rapa displays complicated regulation after a whole-genome triplication (WGT) event, which provides enormous advantages for use in genetic studies, thus it is an ideal model for exploring

Anthocyanin rich extract of Brassica oleracea L. alleviates experimentally induced myocardial infarction.

Cardioprotective potential of anthocyanin rich red cabbage extract (ARCE) was assessed in H2O2 treated rat neonatal cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) and isoproterenol (ISO) induced rodent model of myocardial infarction. H2O2 treated H9c2 cells recorded cytotoxicity (48-50%) and apoptosis (57.3%), the same were reduced in presence of ARCE (7-10% & 12.3% respectively). Rats pretreated with ARCE for 30 days followed by ISO treatment recorded favourable heart: body weight ratio as compared to ISO treated group. Also, the mRNA levels of enzymatic antioxidants (sod and catalase) and apoptotic genes (bax

Natural variation in BjuB05.IRT1 is associated with cadmium accumulation in Brassica juncea.

Phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated agricultural soils requires suitable germplasm and an improved understanding of the genetic factors underlying Cd accumulation. Here, we evaluated a genetically diverse panel of 165 Brassica juncea accessions and identified BJ20 as a high-Cd-accumulating genotype. Across two years, two sites, and two developmental stages, BJ20 consistently accumulated more Cd than the low-accumulating genotype BJ25. Mean shoot Cd accumulation reached 111.21 μg plant⁻¹ in BJ20, compared with 55.07 μg plant⁻¹ in BJ25. However, BJ20 had a lower root-to-shoot transloca

Cd2+ enhancing the bromination of bisphenol A in Brassica chinensis L.: Pathways and mechanisms.

Traditional heavy metal pollution, such as cadmium, impacts the transformation and risks of bisphenol pollutants (like bisphenol A, BPA), in plants, especially due to the ubiquitous presence of bromide ion. Although it has been discovered that the bromination of phenolic pollutants occurs in plants, thereby increasing the associated risks, the influence and mechanisms of bromination under complex contamination conditions involving both heavy metals and phenolic compounds remain poorly understood. This study addresses the issue by exposing Brassica chinensis L. to cadmium ion (Cd2+, 25-100 μM),
