BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a debilitating sequela of breast cancer treatment and is becoming a greater concern in light of improved long-term survival. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy for which systemic therapy, surgery, and radiotherapy remain the standard of care, thereby making IBC patients highly susceptible to developing BCRL. This study evaluated BCRL in IBC following trimodal therapy.
METHODS: IBC patients treated from 2016 to 2019 were identified from an institutional database. Patients were excluded if they presented wi

Background: Many assessments have been reported and used in evaluating lymphedema. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic contribution of ultrasonography in unilateral breast cancer-related lymphedema. Methods and Results: Upper extremity circumferences were measured with a measuring tape from ulnar styloid at the wrist to the axilla at 4 cm intervals. The point with the highest difference between the upper extremities and the control point with no difference between the lower extremities were marked. Skin and subcutaneous thicknesses were measured from four quadrants (volar m

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a common sequelae among breast cancer survivors. This review provides updated information on recent studies to prevent, diagnose, and actively treat women with BCRL.
RECENT FINDINGS: In total, 63 articles were identified from 2015 and 2020 that assessed incidence, risk factors, surveillance, measurement and definition, treatment, and awareness of BCRL. Depending on the approach and timing of assessment, BCRL incidence rates ranged from 9.1% to 39%. Modified radical mastectomy, number of positive lymph nodes, and postoperative compl

BACKGROUND: More than one in five patients who undergo treatment for breast cancer will develop breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). BCRL can occur as a result of breast cancer surgery and/or radiation therapy. BCRL can negatively impact comfort, function, and quality of life (QoL). Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), a type of hands-on therapy, is frequently used for BCRL and often as part of complex decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT is a fourfold conservative treatment which includes MLD, compression therapy (consisting of compression bandages, compression sleeves, or other types of compressi

Breast cancer-related upper extremity lymphedema is an unsolved iatrogenic complication with a reported incidence ranging from 9 to 41 percent. The increase in volume and recurrent cellulitis of the affected limb cause both physical and mental distress to many breast cancer survivors. However, postmastectomy lymphedema has received little attention, and no curative treatment is available. Conservative treatment with decongestive therapy has been the primary choice for lymphedema treatment, but it is cumbersome and has limited benefits. To date, there is no consensus on surgical procedure and p

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the accuracy of using self-reported signs and symptoms to identify the presence of lymphedema as well as the usefulness of identifying clinically measurable lymphedema on the basis of certain symptoms elicited by the Lymphedema Breast Cancer Questionnaire (LBCQ).
METHODS: This analysis used logistic regression to identify symptoms predictive of differences between symptom experiences of participants belonging to two distinct groups (study A): those with known post-breast cancer lymphedema (n = 40) and those in a control group of women with no history

Background: The Lymphedema Functioning, Disability, and Health questionnaire for Upper Limb Lymphedema (Lymph-ICF-UL) is a health-related quality-of-life questionnaire for patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema. Previous testing of this questionnaire showed very good psychometric properties; however, responsiveness has not yet been established. The aim of this study was to determine its internal and external responsiveness. Methods and Results: Ninety-five patients treated with decongestive lymphatic therapy in a longitudinal trial were recruited. Patients completed the Lymph-ICF-UL tw

Background: This retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the lymphedema index ratio to predict the effect of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) in patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) and to establish a lymphedema index ratio cutoff value for the extent of CDT effect. Materials and Methods: All 108 enrolled patients with BCRL underwent volume measurements and bioelectrical impedance analysis before and after CDT. The difference in percent excess volume (PEV) before and after CDT was defined as the therapeutic effect, and each patient was assigned to Groups A, B, or

According to the American Cancer Society, there are currently 2 million breast cancer (BC) survivors in the USA and 20% of them cope with lymphedema (LE). The primary aim of this study was to determine the predictive factors of BC-related LE. The secondary aim was to investigate the impact of predictors on the severity of LE. The study design was intended to be a 1:2 matched case-control study. Instead, we stratified on age (+/-10 years), radiation therapy (y/n), and type of operation (SM/MRM/MRM with tram). Patients who underwent BC surgery between 1990 and 2000 at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital

Lymphedema is a prevalent complication affecting patients with breast cancer, greatly impacting their quality of life. This editorial describes diagnostic methods and therapeutic interventions for managing lymphedema in patients with breast cancer. Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation and objective measures, including arm circumference and volumetric assessments, along with lymphoscintigraphy and ultrasonic measurements. Treatment primarily involves complex decongestive physical therapy, comprising manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and meticulous skin care. These int

Breast cancer is a common occurrence in women, and it is also associated with lymphedema. In this case, the patient reported breast cancer-related lymphedema after a radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection in the left breast; after her treatment, she experienced this condition for three months. Following the assessment, it was determined that the lymphedema was in stage 2 as a result of the delay. As the measurements increased, CDT was recommended for the treatment. This study provides evidence that early assessment and regular self-assessment for signs can lead to early resolut

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer- related lymphedema (BCRL) affects about 3 to 5 million patients worldwide, with about 20,000 per year in the United States. As breast cancer mortality is declining due to improved diagnostics and treatments, the long-term effects of treatment for BCRL need to be addressed.
METHODS: The American Society of Breast Surgeons Lymphatic Surgery Working Group conducted a large review of the literature in order to develop guidelines on BCRL prevention and treatment. This was a comprehensive but not systematic review of the literature. This was inclusive of recent randomized

INTRODUCTION: Lymphedema can be a debilitating condition, causing a great decrease in a person's quality of life (QoL). Treatment with lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA), in which an anastomosis is created between the lymphatic and venous system, may attenuate lymphedema symptoms and reduce swelling. In this study, we share the results using LVA to treat breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) at our institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were eligible for inclusion if they suffered from unilateral BCRL, if functional lymphatics were available, if compression therapy was used for at le

OBJECTIVE: To review the progress of treatment and prevention of breast cancer related lymphedema.
METHODS: The recent literature concerning treatment and prevention of breast cancer related lymphedema was extensively consulted and reviewed.
RESULTS: The treatment of lymphedema is now based on complete decongestive therapy, supplemented with medicine and surgery. Those procedures have been proved to be safe and effective. Sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary reverse mapping, and lymphaticovenous anastomoses have been used to decrease the incidence of lymphedema. They show promising effective

OBJECTIVE: Water displacement, circumference measurement, and tissue tonometry are important methods to evaluate the status of lymphedemous limbs in breast cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliabilities, and define the limits for clinical change indicative of clinical improvement with respect to these three measures.
DESIGN: Fourteen patients were recruited for water displacement and circumference measurement, and 17 for tissue resistance by tonometry. All had been treated for breast cancer and subsequently developed lymphedema. Two physical therapists conduct
