Nodular hidradenoma of the breast: report of two cases with literature review.

Two cases of nodular hidradenoma of the breast with possibly different origins are reported. Case 1 is of a 58-year-old female with a breast mass in the left, outer lower-quadrant. A histogenetical origin in the skin adnexal glands was suspected due to its superficial location and immunohistochemical findings. Case 2 is of a 44-year-old male with a subareolar nodule and nipple discharge. Histological examination demonstrated that the tumor was located deep in the breast tissue, was surrounded by dilated mammary ducts and exhibited intraductal extensions, which are all features mimicking those

Multiple primary cancers in the Vaud Cancer Registry, Switzerland, 1974-89.

Data collected by the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud (whose population in 1980 was about 530,000 inhabitants) were used to estimate the incidence of second metachronous primary cancers following any specific neoplasm. Among 34,615 cases of incident neoplasms registered between 1974 and 1989 and followed through integrated active follow-up to the end of 1989, for a total of 118,241 person-years at risk, there were 2,185 second primaries (1,280 males, 905 females). For both sexes, the standardised incidence ratios (SIR) were significantly elevated by about 20%. Overall significantly

[Regional differentials in cancer mortality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1979-1981].

In 1980, malignant neoplasms ranked 3rd as a cause of death in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a crude mortality rate of 89.8 per 100,000. Cancer mortality data for 1979-1981 are presented for the State, with the objective of analyzing regional differentials. For the purpose of comparing mortality from the most important cancers, the State was divided into three regions: Capital, Metropolitan Belt and Interior, on the basis of the geographical structure of the State--which gave rise to the present urbanization patterns. Average annual age and sex-specific mortality rates per 100,000

30-year cancer trends in Jamaica. Kingston & St. Andrew (1958-1987).

A total of 19,225 malignant neoplasms were recorded in Kingston & St. Andrew, Jamaica over the 30-year period 1958-1987. The most prevalent cancers in males were those of prostate (12.2%), stomach (10.9%) and lung (10.7%). In females 24.1% of cancers occurred in breast and 20% were recorded for invasive carcinoma of the cervix. There is a steady improvement in the diagnosis of in situ cervical lesions, and a relative decline in the incidence of invasive lesions. Lung cancer in women remains at a low level. A significant decline in cancer of the oesophagus and stomach in both sexes was noted, w

Cystic encapsulated papillary carcinoma with ductal carcinoma in situ in the male breast: a clinicopathologic feature with a diagnostic challenge: A case report and review of literature.

RATIONALE: Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is a rare subset of breast carcinoma accounting for 0.5% to 2.0% of all patients with breast cancer and occuring mostly in postmenopausal women. It is even rarer in male breast cancer, and male EPC has only been reported in few cases. EPC has a distinctive histological pattern and a better prognosis compared with other types of breast carcinoma. Compared to the previously reported EPC cases, the lesion was unusually cystic made the diagnosis challenging. Accordingly, herein, we describe a rare case of EPC was unusually cystic in an elder male b

Mixed gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of male breast resulting from a proliferation of its glandular component, and it is usually due to an altered estrogen-androgen balance. It should be differentiated from pseudogynecomastia, which is characterized by fat deposition without glandular proliferation and from breast carcinoma. Gynecomastia could be physiological in neonates and pubertal or pathological due to drug intake, chronic liver, or renal disease, hyperthyroidism, testicular or adrenal neoplasms, and hypogonadism whether primary, or secondary. Properly organized work-up is needed to reach the c

Mammary cancer in the dog: a study of 120 cases.

Of the 120 cases of mammary cancer occurring in 117 female dogs (15 spayed), 2 male dogs, and 1 dog of undetermined sex, 107 (nearly 90%) were observed in dogs 8 to 15 years old. Mammary tumors occurred in nearly 14% of 875 female dogs with neoplasms. Nearly 60% of 128 neoplasms were located in the 4th and 5th mammary glands. Of the 128 cancers in these 120 dogs, 85 were classified as duct carcinoma, 38 as lobular carcinoma, 3 as malignant mixed tumor, and 2 as duct and lobular carcinomas. Most duct carcinomas originated in the epithelial cells of ducts at all levels, and a few arose in previo

Oestradiol receptors in non-neoplastic gynaecomastic tissue of phenotypic males.

Cytoplasmic oestradiol receptors have been reported in breast tumor tissue but not in the uninvolved tissue from the same patients. Since gynaecomastic tissue is highly predisposed to neoplastic transformation, such receptors were looked for in this tissue from 13 phenotypic males of whom 6 had Klinefelter's syndrome. High affinity saturable binding (Kd approximately 10(-10) M) of 3H-oestradiol-17 beta was found in the breast tissue from 12 of these patients by gel elution and dextran-coated charcoal techniques. The concentration of binding sites were found to range from 16 to 359 fmol/mg cyto

Breast Metastasis from Pulmonary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma in a Male Patient: A Case Report.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lung is a rare salivary gland-type tumor with heterogeneous clinical behavior and the potential to mimic neoplasms arising in other organs. The purpose of this report is to describe an exceptionally uncommon presentation of pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma manifesting as a breast metastasis in a male patient, a scenario that poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its rarity and its morphological resemblance to primary breast carcinoma. We evaluated the patient through clinical examination, cross-sectional imaging, endobronchial procedures, ultrasound-g

Magnetic resonance imaging and mammographic appearance of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in a male breast: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare low-grade soft tissue neoplasm with trunk and extremities being the most common sites of involvement. We report a rare case of male breast with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and its imaging features. To our knowledge the imaging appearance of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the breast has never been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the imaging appearance of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans on the breast of a 41-year-old Chinese man who initially presented with a palpable lump. A mammogram showed two lesions, o

The spectrum of malignant diagnoses in cerebrospinal fluid cytology from an adult population: a multi-institutional retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION: Limited updated literature exists about the prevalence and spectrum of malignancies involving cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In this multi-institutional study, we review our experience with focus on first time malignancy diagnosis in CSF samples of adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional databases at 4 academic centers were queried retrospectively for CSFs over a 10-year period. The following data elements were collected: total # of CSFs, total # of CSFs with a malignant diagnosis; for each patient with a first time CSF diagnosis of malignancy: age, gender, diagnosis, prior his

Breast implant-associated squamous cell carcinoma in a male patient: A case report and review of the medical literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the breast is a rare tumor type. The diagnosis of this tumor type is more frequently made only after microscopy evaluation. Breast implant-associated SCC is rarer with medical literature review indicating only 18 cases reported in female individuals. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported an unusual case that a man found a 3-cm sized mass on his left breast at first, who had a implant surgery 18 years previously to reconstruct the deformed left breast, as related to the Poland's syndrome. More than 1 year after the mass was detected, the size of th

The positive peritoneal effusion. A retrospective study of cytopathologic diagnoses with autopsy confirmation.

The distribution of 215 malignant tumors responsible for peritoneal effusions was investigated with respect to cytohistologic correlation and autopsy features. In males, cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and liver were the most frequently observed forms, whereas in females tumors at gynecologic sites far outnumbered other neoplasms, such as stomach, bowel, pancreas, gallbladder and liver cancer. Cells from extra abdominal tumors, consistently seen in positive ascitic effusions, were from pleural mesothelioma and breast carcinoma, respectively, in males and females. The first diagn

Trends in cancer mortality in Switzerland, 1951-1984.

Trends in overall age-standardized, truncated (35-64 years) and age-specific (40 to 49) cancer death certification rates in Switzerland from 1951 to 1984 were analysed. There was a substantial rise in lung cancer mortality in males, with an over 100% increase in overall rates. Thus, in the early 1980's, lung cancer alone accounted for 26% of all cancer deaths in Swiss males. However, male lung cancer rates tended to level off in subsequent cohorts starting from younger middle age in the late 1960's. In females, lung cancer mortality was approximately ten times lower than in males, but rates ha

Cutaneous Adenomyoepithelioma: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) is a biphasic neoplasm of epithelial and myoepithelial cells. It is most commonly found in the breast, although rare cases have been reported from the lung, salivary glands, and skin. There are 5 well-documented cases of cutaneous AME in the literature. We report a new case of cutaneous AME. Our case was commingled with apocrine hidrocystoma. This is the first report of cutaneous AME in a male patient and the first to describe SOX10 immunostaining in cutaneous AME. We review the literature on cutaneous AME and note the greater than chance colocalization with other adn

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma with RARA::NPEPPS fusion.

Gene fusions have emerged as crucial molecular drivers of oncogenesis in a subset of cutaneous adnexal neoplasms, including poroid neoplasms and hidradenomas. We present a unique case of primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma harboring RARA::NPEPPS fusion, broadening the spectrum of fusion-associated cutaneous adnexal neoplasms. A 77-year-old African American male presented with an ulcerated thigh nodule. Histopathologically, the predominantly dermal-based adenocarcinoma exhibited papillary, micropapillary, cribriform, and solid growth patterns with central comedonecrosis, set in a fibrotic/desm
