Benign Brenner Tumor Mixed with Mucinous Cystadenoma of the Left Ovary: Case Report and Literature Review, 2023.

Ovarian mucinous tumors mixed with Brenner tumors have rarely been reported. The coexistence of such epithelial tumors present histopathologic diagnostic difficulties. Here we report a 57-year-old postmenopausal woman who had experienced an abdominal distention and pain over a period of eight months. A physical examination revealed a grossly distended abdomen that reached the xiphoid process. A firm and mobile abdomino-pelvic mass with a smooth surface and a regular border was identified. Laboratory investigations showed a hemoglobin level of 13.54 g/dl and a serum cancer antigen 125 (CA125) o

A case report of an incidental Brenner tumor found after resection of a large ovarian mucinous neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Brenner Tumors are rare adenofibromas that are most commonly benign and discovered in post-menopausal women. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a case report of a 57-year-old female with three months of progressively worsening abdominal pain due to a large abdominal mass discovered on CT scan. Surgical removal of the mass revealed a giant mucinous tumor of the ovary with an associated Brenner tumor that was discovered incidentally. DISCUSSION: Although the Brenner tumor was accurately identified in the intraoperative frozen section evaluation, the mucinous tumor was underdiagnosed b

Immunohistochemistry as an adjunct for challenging histological patterns of borderline Brenner tumors: An illustrative study of 4 cases.

Borderline Brenner tumors (BBT) have a range of morphology that shows considerable overlap with that of malignant Brenner tumors (MBT). In particular, two histological patterns of BBT can be particularly challenging: 1) BBT with intraepithelial carcinoma (BBT-IEC) and 2) BBT with a small nested pattern (BBT-SNP). BBT-IEC is characterized by a tumor with the low-power non-infiltrative silhouette of a conventional BBT, but with increased cytological atypia and mitotic activity similar to that of MBT. Conversely, BBT-SNP is characterized by a complex proliferation of small tumor nests that closel

Squamotransitional Cell Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix with Ovarian Metastasis and Benign Brenner Tumor: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in women and the fourth leading cause of death among women. The main histological types of cervical cancer are squamous cell carcinoma-75% of all cases; adenocarcinoma-10-25%; and all other rare variants including adenosquamous carcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma. Squamotransitional cervical cancer is an extremely rare and poorly studied subtype of squamous cell carcinoma. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 64-year-old female patient with early-stage squamotransitional carcinoma. A metastasis was observed in the left ovary

Brooke-Spiegler syndrome tumor spectrum beyond the skin: a patient carrying germline R936X CYLD mutation and a somatic CYLD mutation in Brenner tumor.

Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is a hereditary disorder characterized by a predisposition to the development of skin appendage neoplasms and the major and minor salivary glands neoplasms. The role of the CYLD mutation in visceral neoplasms is still unclear, except for the parathyroid tumor. We report the case of a 46-year-old patient with multiple cylindromas and trichoepitheliomas, a Brenner tumor of the ovary and a negative family history for Brooke-Spiegler phenotype. Genetic analysis revealed R936X germline mutation in the proband, but not in the patient's relatives. The same somatic mutation wa

Stable Pleural Effusion as a Diagnostic Pitfall in Meigs Syndrome: A Case of a Benign Brenner Tumor with Elevated CA125.

We report a rare case of Meigs' syndrome caused by a benign Brenner tumor in a 74-year-old woman. The diagnosis was delayed because of a one-year history of unexplained, persistently stable exudative pleural effusion. The subsequent worsening of effusion and new-onset ascites prompted imaging, which revealed a large pelvic mass and elevated cancer antigen 125 levels. Tumor resection resulted in the complete resolution of the fluid collection. This case illustrates that Meigs' syndrome can present with indolent exudative effusion. Therefore, a thorough pelvic evaluation should be considered in

Benign and Malignant Brenner Tumors Show an Absence of TERT Promoter Mutations That Are Commonly Present in Urothelial Carcinoma.

Brenner tumors are uncommon ovarian neoplasms, which have morphologic and immunophenotypical features of transitional cell (urothelial) differentiation. The origin of Brenner tumors is perplexing, but they are believed to arise from transitional cell metaplasia occurring within the ovary and/or fallopian tube, although it is controversial whether this metaplasia is truly along transitional cell lines. Recently, TERT promoter mutations have been identified in urothelial carcinoma (UC) with high frequency (approximately 70%), and the current literature suggests a potential diagnostic and/or prog

Bilateral borderline ovarian Brenner tumor coexisting with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm in a perimenopausal woman: a case report.

Borderline ovarian Brenner tumor (BOT-B) accounts for less than 2% of all ovarian neoplasms. It is typically unilateral and large, with non-specific imaging features. Synchronous extra-ovarian neoplasia is rarely documented. A 47-year-old gravida 2, para 2 woman presented with intermenstrual bleeding and lower abdominal discomfort. Transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 9 cm right adnexal complex mass without ascites or elevated serum tumor markers. Intraoperative findings identified bilateral, firm, lobulated ovarian tumors (right: 5 cm; left: 7 cm) and

Disappearance of Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma after Treatment of a Borderline Brenner Tumor: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Brenner tumors are relatively rare ovarian neoplasms with very few reported cases associating these tumors and urothelial carcinomas with different characteristics and particularities. CASE REPORT: We report an unusual clinical case of borderline unilateral Brenner tumor of the ovary associated with a highly recurrent diffuse low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma of the upper and lower urinary tract. The patient received a total cystectomy and resection of the Brenner tumor. Her clinical response was marked by the absence of recurrence of the urothelial carcinoma and the disapp

Diagnosis of a small, androgenizing Brenner cell tumor in a postmenopausal woman aided by laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Rapidly progressive hirsutism or virilization in the postmenopausal woman raises the suspicion of an androgen-secreting tumor. Hormonal testing and imaging studies usually rule out an adrenal tumor. However, small, androgenizing ovarian tumors may not be detectable by imaging studies. CASE: A postmenopausal woman presented with rapidly progressive hirsutism and elevated androgens. Imaging studies did not localize the tumor. Bilateral laparoscopic oophorectomy was performed, and a small, androgenizing Brenner cell tumor of the left ovary was demonstrated on histologic examination.

Benign Brenner tumor of the ovary: two-dimensional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound features-a retrospective study from a single center.

OBJECTIVE: Benign Brenner tumor (BBT) is a rare ovarian tumor, and there are few discrete reports about its manifestation in an ultrasound. This study sought to investigate the two-dimensional (2D) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) features of this entity. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-center study. The clinical manifestations, laboratory examination, and ultrasound data of 25 female patients with BBT were confirmed by pathology when they underwent 2D and/or CEUS examination at Ningbo First Hospital from January 2012 to June 2023. The ultrasound findings of the patients were a

Management of a Borderline Brenner Tumor of the Ovary in a Premenopausal Woman in Northern Tanzania. A Rare Case Report and Review of the Current Literature.

Brenner tumors are rare ovarian neoplasms that are typically small and unilateral. Most cases are benign; less than 5% of all Brenner tumors are borderline or proliferative. Brenner tumors originate from the follicular epithelium and consist of ovarian transitional cells surrounded by fibrous tissue. Here we present a case of a 49-year-old premenopausal woman from Northern Tanzania. This patient presented to our facility with acute abdominal pain. She also reported abdominal distention which was first noticed 12 months prior to presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified a 21 × 1

A patient with diabetes and breast cancer in whom virilization was caused by a testosterone-producing mature cystic teratoma containing a Brenner tumor.

A 74-year-old woman with impaired glucose tolerance exhibited virilization. An examination of various hormone levels showed normal pituitary hormone and adrenal hormone levels. However, the patient's blood testosterone level was remarkably high and was suspected of having caused the virilization. An abdominal computed tomography revealed a multilocular cystoma in the left ovary with the features of a mature cystic teratoma. In addition, a chest computed tomography revealed the presence of a mass in the left breast that was subsequently diagnosed as breast cancer based on the results of a biops

Exploring the histogenesis of ovarian mucinous and transitional cell (Brenner) neoplasms and their relationship with Walthard cell nests: a study of 120 tumors.

CONTEXT: The origin of and relationship between ovarian mucinous and transitional cell (Brenner) neoplasms are enigmatic. The reported association ranges from 1% to 16%, and whether there is an association with Walthard cell nests is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the histologic relationship between mucinous and Brenner tumors. DESIGN: A total of 40 mucinous cystadenomas, 67 Brenner tumors, and 13 combined tumors were studied. Peritoneal surfaces were examined for Walthard nests in 83 patients compared with 272 controls. RESULTS: A total of 25% of tumors with a mucinous component contained

Transitional cell carcinoma of the endometrium associated with benign ovarian brenner tumor: a case report with immunohistochemistry molecular analysis and a review of the literature.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the endometrium (TCCE) is a subtype of endometrial carcinoma, characterized by a prominent papillary pattern, resembling the papillary carcinoma of the urothelium. This neoplasm is very rare, with only 13 cases reported in the international literature. In this paper, a new case of TCCE associated with benign ovarian Brenner tumor is described. This association is extremely rare, with only 1 other case reported. A review of the literature is performed to delineate the clinico pathologic features of this malignancy. Moreover, immunohistochemical and molecular studi

Coexistence of malignant ovarian Brenner tumor and borderline mucinous cystadenoma, combined with primary uterine corpus endometrioid carcinoma: A case report and literature review.

Malignant Brenner tumor (MBT) of the ovary is a rare malignant ovarian tumor, whereas uterine corpus endometrioid carcinoma (UEC) constitutes one of the most common malignant tumors of the female reproductive system. The present study reported on a case of the coexistence of ovarian MBT and borderline mucinous cystadenoma combined with primary UEC. Therefore, the present case is a synchronous primary cancer of both ovary and endometrium. Although synchronous primary cancers of the endometrium and ovary are relatively uncommon, they are not rare; however, due to the rarity of MBT, this case was

Predominant Brenner tumor combined with struma ovarii containing a papillary microcarcinoma associated with benign peritoneal strumosis: report of a case and histologic features.

Brenner tumor and struma ovarii, two uncommon ovarian tumors arising alone or together with dermoid cysts or adenomas, are both rare entities. Both tumors rarely become malignant and rarely metastasize. Few published reports describe coexisting Brenner tumor and malignant struma ovarii. Patients in whom these malignancies coexist only occasionally have peritoneal spreading, strumosis, or a history of thyrotoxicosis. The patient we describe, a 74-year-old woman, presented with a 2 months' history of lower abdominal pain and episodic intestinal subocclusion due to a complex pelvic mass. The mass

MDM2 amplification in malignant Brenner tumors may play a role in progression to malignancy and aid in separation from urothelial and other ovarian carcinomas.

Malignant Brenner tumor (MBT) is diagnosed in the setting of invasive high-grade carcinoma with urothelial-like morphology and the presence of an adjacent benign Brenner tumor (BBT) or borderline Brenner tumor (BLBT). MDM2 amplification was recently detected by next-generation sequencing on a small number of MBTs, potentially significant for future targeted therapy. Experience is limited, however, and evaluation of widely available MDM2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) has not been performed to determine clinical utility. After confirming all diagnoses morphologically and immunohistochemically, we p

Immunohistochemical analysis of uroplakins, urothelial specific proteins, in ovarian Brenner tumors, normal tissues, and benign and neoplastic lesions of the female genital tract.

Uroplakins are the characteristic integral membrane proteins in terminally differentiated, superficial urothelial asymmetric unit membrane. Brenner tumors of the ovary and Walthard cell nests of Fallopian tubes have been considered to represent urothelial differentiation in the female genital tract, but no definitive differentiation marker has been demonstrated supporting such a conclusion. An immunohistochemical analysis was performed to assess the expression of uroplakins in these lesions as well as in various benign and neoplastic lesions and normal tissues of the female genital tract.
