Brucellosis after dengue.

Zoonoses such as Brucella, Mycobacterium bovis, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Listeria, etc. are spread by ingestion of contaminated unpasteurised milk products (from infected cattle) and result in infectious outbreaks, hospitalisations and mortality. In Southeast Asian countries, raw goat's milk is sometimes used for dengue infection-associated thrombocytopenia; however, evidence to support this sociocultural practice is lacking. A peak incidence of brucellosis cases may occur after a dengue season in communities where this practice is prevalent.

Tolerance of the human brucellosis vaccine and the intradermal reaction test for brucellosis.

The aim of the present study was to determine the tolerance and efficacy of human brucellosis vaccine as well as the tolerance and sensitivity of the intradermal reaction test for brucellosis. A total of 1,121 subjects initially consented to participate in the study. Following clinical examination, 762 were tested with the intradermal reaction test (IDR Test, Pasteur Merieux, France), of whom 576 with no previous or current brucellosis infection were accepted for vaccination. Two hundred seventy-one were vaccinated with brucellosis vaccine and 305 with tetanus vaccine, the latter group serving

Pregnancy associated brucellosis.

Brucellosis zoonotic infection caused by Brucella spp. In endemic countries, the disease does not spare the pregnant. There is evidence that brucellosis can induce abortion in humans. Positive cultures of brucella from human placenta, aborted fetuses, and other products of conception were reported previously. It is speculated that brucellosis causes fewer spontaneous abortions in humans than animals due to the absence of Erythritol in the human placenta and fetus. In addition, the presence of anti-brucella activity in human amniotic fluid may also play a role. Rifampin is considered the mainst

Canine brucellosis management.

Infertility in dogs is a growing concern in breeding kennels. There are a number of bacteria, viruses, and husbandry practices that must be considered to determine the cause of decreased litter sizes, abortions, weak puppies, and lack of pregnancy, but brucellosis should be at the top of the differential list.

Laboratory-acquired brucellosis.

We report two laboratory-acquired Brucella melitensis infections that were shown to be epidemiologically related. Blood culture isolates were initially misidentified because of variable Gram stain results, which led to misdiagnoses and subsequent laboratory exposures. Notifying laboratory personnel who unknowingly processed cultures from brucellosis patients is an important preventive measure.

Buttock abscess brucellosis.

Human brucellosis is a multisystem disease that may present with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, and its complications can affect almost all organs and systems with varying incidence. Soft-tissue infection due to Brucella species is a rare complication of brucellosis. This report presents a case of a 30-y-old previously healthy woman whose right buttock abscess culture grew Brucella spp. The patient was treated successfully with abscess drainage and antibiotic therapy.

The seroprevalence of brucellosis among undiagnosed family members of brucellosis positive patients.

AIM: This study investigated the seroprevalence, complications and risk factors of Brucella infection in rural areas of Sivas, Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in three hyperendemic counties for brucellosis known as Gurun, Altinyayla and Kangal in Sivas between April and October in 2011. A total of 1,430 subjects were consulted. RESULTS: Of the 1,430 subjects, 217 (15.2%) with clinical findings compatible with brucellosis were examined by taking blood samples to study both standard tube agglutination test (STAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (Genzyme Vir

Influence of brucellosis history on serological diagnosis and evolution of patients with acute brucellosis.

Serological diagnosis of human brucellosis is problematic in endemic brucellosis regions and with patients having a history of brucellosis. The aim of this study is to ascertain the serologic and evolutionary behavior of the tests of serum agglutination, Coombs anti-Brucella, immunocapture-agglutination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) IgG, IgA, IgM and ELISA-IgG avidity against Brucella lipopolysaccharide (S-LPS), in patients with acute brucellosis based on whether or not a history of brucellosis exists. Titers and seropositivity in all the tests assayed were higher in the patients

Bovine Brucellosis: Epidemiology, Public Health Implications, and Status of Brucellosis in Ethiopia.

Brucellosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease that causes serious problems in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Brucella abortus is the primary cause of brucellosis in cattle, and Brucella melitensis and Brucella suis also occasionally cause Brucella infection in cattle. Abortion and the retained fetal membrane are typical signs in females, whereas orchitis and bursitis are the known signs in male cattle. Brucellosis is typically transmitted to healthy cattle by direct or indirect contact with diseased cattle or their discharges. Humans can acquire brucellosis through the consump

Canine Brucellosis: An Update.

Canine brucellosis is an infectious and zoonotic disease caused by Brucella canis, which has been reported worldwide, and is a major public health concern due to close contact between dogs and humans. In dogs, canine brucellosis manifests with abortion outbreaks, reproductive failure, enlargement of lymph nodes, and occasionally affects the osteoarticular system, although the occurrence of asymptomatic infections in dogs are not uncommon. In humans, the disease is associated with a febrile syndrome, commonly with non-specific symptoms including splenomegaly, fatigue, and weakness. Infection of

Research Progress on Brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a debilitating febrile illness caused by an intracellular Brucella. The disease is distributed in humans and animals widely, especially in developing countries. Ten species are included in the genus Brucella nowadays; four species of them are pathogenic to humans, which make brucellosis a zoonosis with more than 500,000 new cases reported annually. For human brucellosis, the most pathogenic species is B. melitensis followed by B. suis, while B. abortus is the mildest type of brucellosis. The infection mechanism of Brucella is complicated and mostly relies on its virulence factor

The advances in brucellosis vaccines.

Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonosis affecting animal and human health. Till now, there is no effective vaccine licensed for brucellosis in humans. Although M5, H38 and 45/20 vaccines were used to prevent animal brucellosis in the early stages, the currently used animal vaccines are S19, Rev.1, S2, RB51 and SR82. However, these vaccines still have several drawbacks such as residual virulence and interfering conventional serological tests. With the development of DNA recombination technologies and the completion of the sequence of Brucella genome, much research focuses on the search for potentia

Chronic Brucellosis in Japan.

Human brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide, rarely occurs in Japan, and only a few chronic cases have been reported. We herein report the case of a 39-year-old Japanese woman with chronic human brucellosis, considered a Brucella canis infection, that persisted for 19 years. Her medical history and fever pattern suggested chronic brucellosis, and the diagnosis was made based on the results of a serum tube agglutination test (SAT). After undergoing combination therapy with streptomycin and doxycycline, she achieved symptomatic relief and showed negative SAT results. Even in non

Brucellosis vaccines for livestock.

Brucellosis is a livestock disease responsible for fetal loss due to abortions. Worldwide, this disease has profound economic and social impact by reducing the ability of livestock producers to provide an adequate supply of disease-free meat and dairy products. In addition to its presence in domesticated animals, brucellosis is harbored in a number of wildlife species creating new disease reservoirs, which adds to the difficulty of eradicating this disease. Broad and consistent use of the available vaccines would contribute in reducing the incidence of brucellosis. Unfortunately, this practice

Animal brucellosis in Egypt.

Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis that affects the public health and economic performance of endemic as well as non-endemic countries. In developing nations, brucellosis is often a very common but neglected disease. The purpose of this review is to provide insight about brucellosis in animal populations in Egypt and help to understand the situation from 1986 to 2013. A total of 67 national and international scientific publications on serological investigations, isolation, and biotyping studies from 1986 to 2013 were reviewed to verify the current status of brucellosis in animal popul
