Hippotherapy in the Treatment of CMD and Bruxism in Dentistry.

Dysfunctions and disorders of the craniomandibular system are accompanied by pathophysiological changes of muscle groups in the throat/neck and facial area, e.g., pain in the jaw and muscles of mastication and disturbance of occlusion, leading to teeth injury (loss of dental hard tissue, fractures/sensibility disorders, etc.). For muscular dysfunctions, even in the context of psychosomatic disorders and chronic stress, hippotherapy is particularly suitable, since it helps actively to relieve muscle tensions. In the current project we combined hippotherapy with progressive muscle relaxation (PM

Neurobiology of bruxism: The impact of stress (Review).

Bruxism is a non-functional involuntary muscle activity that affects more than one-third of the population at some point in their lives. A number of factors have been found to be related to the etiopathogenesis of bruxism; therefore, the condition is considered multifactorial. The most commonly accepted factor is stress. Stress has long been considered to increase muscle tone and to reduce the pain threshold. Current evidence indicates that exposure to chronic stress, distress and allostatic load ignite neurological degeneration and the attenuation of critical neuronal pathways that are highly

Sleep Bruxism in Children: A Narrative Review.

Sleep bruxism, characterized by involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible during sleep, is common in children. Sleep bruxism occurs while the patient is asleep. As such, diagnosis can be difficult as the affected child is usually unaware of the tooth grinding sounds. This article aims to familiarize physicians with the diagnosis and management of sleep bruxism in children. A search was conducted in May 2023 in PubMed Clinical Queries using the key terms "Bruxism" OR "Teeth grinding" AND "sleep". The search strategy included all observational

Prevalence of temporomandibular disorders and bruxism in seniors.

BACKGROUND: Information on the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) or possible/probable bruxism in seniors is heterogeneous and sparse. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the prevalence of TMD and possible/probable bruxism in German adults aged 60 years and older. METHODS: Participants of the Interdisciplinary Longitudinal Study of Adult Development and Aging (ILSE) born between 1950-1952 (C1) and 1930-1932 (C2) were examined in 2014-2016 (fourth wave). The participants were surveyed and clinically examined by one calibrated examiner. Two questions of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)

STXBP1 encephalopathy is associated with awake bruxism.

Heterozygous mutations in syntaxin-binding protein 1 (STXBP1) gene are associated with early infantile epileptic encephalopathy 4 (EIEE4). This condition is characterized by epilepsy, developmental delay (DD), and various movement disorders. Herein, we will report 5 unrelated patients with different de novo mutations in STXBP1. In addition, we conducted an online survey through Facebook to identify the incidence of bruxism (BRX) in these patients. Four out of 5 patients (80%) presented with awake BRX (A-BRX). Bruxism was also reported in 81.4% (57/70) of the patients with STXBP1 encephalopathy

Bruxism: An umbrella review of systematic reviews.

OBJECTIVES: To synthesise available knowledge about both sleep (SB) and awake bruxism (AB) as depicted by previous published systematic reviews (SR). METHODS: SR investigating any bruxism-related outcome were selected in a two-phase process. Searches were performed on seven main electronic databases and a partial grey literature search on three databases. Risk of bias of included SR was assessed using the "University of Bristol's tool for assessing risk of bias in SR". RESULTS: From 1038 studies, 41 SR were included. Findings from these SR suggested that (a) among adults, prevalence of AB wa

Bruxism in Movement Disorders: A Comprehensive Review.

Bruxism is an abnormal repetitive movement disorder characterized by jaw clenching and tooth gnashing or grinding. It is classified into two overlapping types: awake bruxism (AB) and sleep bruxism (SB). Theories on factors causing bruxism are a matter of controversy, but a line of evidence suggests that it may to some extent be linked to basal ganglia dysfunction although so far, this topic has received little attention. The purpose of this article was to review cases of bruxism reported in various movement disorders. The biomedical literature was searched for publications reporting the associ

Prevalence of Bruxism in Hemifacial-Spasm Patients.

PURPOSE: A previous study reported an increased prevalence of bruxism (25%) in patients with cranio-cervical dystonia (CCD) compared to normal controls (13%). CCD can affect the muscles of the head and neck. Besides the CCD affecting these muscles, hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a form of peripheral myoclonus due to a neurovascular conflict affecting the muscles of the face. The fact that they affect the same muscle regions could lead to other links in clinical manifestations such as bruxism, which is more common in patients with CCD than in the normal population. The aim was to study the prevalenc

Nocturnal bruxism and hypnotherapy: a case study.

This article describes a case study of a hypnotherapeutic treatment of nocturnal bruxism. The author saw the client for a total of 7 sessions. Hypnotherapy was interspersed with an exploration of tacit and initially denied hostility in the client's life as well as aspects of a somewhat difficult childhood. At the end, the bruxism had disappeared. Follow-up 1 year later indicated that the bruxism had not returned, and the client had become more assertive in her relations with others and had more exploratory activities in her life directions. The latter had not been dealt with in therapy. Thus,

Bruxism control in a child with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most severe childhood disabilities due to a lesion in the developing brain. Oral conditions often observed in this pathogenic are a tendency for the delayed eruption of permanent molars, higher percentages of malocclusion and parafunctional habits, including bruxism. The significance of oral conditions observed in CP patients demonstrates the need for intensive home and professional care for these individuals. This paper presents a 7-year-old boy, with cerebral palsy, severe mental retardation, who had high abrasion wear of the primary teeth related to bruxism

Management of temporomandibular disorder associated with bruxism.

Bruxism is the non-functional clenching or grinding of the teeth that may occur during sleep or, less commonly in the daytime in 5-20% of adults and about 30% of 56 year old children. Although research on bruxism is extensive, its etiology remains debatable. There is some literature to suggest that bruxism is correlated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and malocclusion. The aim of this article is to present the course of this condition in a case of bruxism coupled with TMD with special emphasis on the importance of accurate diagnosis of maxillofacial pain. We also report an association

Prevalence of bruxism awareness in a Sardinian population.

1014 subjects on the island of Sardinia (Italy) were interviewed regarding the habit of clenching and grinding their teeth. They had to specify if this activity occurred during the day, during the night, or both. Other information recorded was their age, gender, marital status, and occupation. Overall prevalence of bruxism was 27.2% (276 subjects). No association was found between bruxism and age, gender and job. Even differentiating diurnal, nocturnal, diurnal and nocturnal bruxism, associations were non-significant. Marital status seems to make some difference: divorced people reported highe

Bruxism in Rett syndrome: a case report.

Rett syndrome is a unique and puzzling disorder noted in females and is possibly caused by fundamental failures in critical brain connectivity during early infancy. The most frequent habits in Rett syndrome are hand sucking or biting, bruxism and mouth breathing. Children with musculoskeletal disorders and children who suffer from mental retardation commonly grind their teeth. A five year old female case with Rett syndrome is presented with significant bruxism in this article.
