Self-Assembled Micro-Sized Hexagons Built from Short DNA in a Crowded Environment.

DNA programmable structures of various morphologies have attracted extensive attention due to their potential for materials science and biomedical applications. Here, we report the formation of micro-sized hexagons via assembly of only one pair of short double-stranded DNA in buffer-salt poly(ethylene glycol) solution. Each DNA strand had complementary bases with a two-base overhang. The procedure of heating and subsequent cooling of blunt-ended double-stranded DNA resulted in different assemblies. These results indicated that end-to-end adhesion at the terminals induced by complementary overh

Review of built and natural environment stressors impacting American-Indian/Alaska-Native children.

Children's exposures to chemical and non-chemical stressors from their everyday environment affects their overall health and well-being. American-Indian/Alaska-Native (AI/AN) children may have a disproportionate burden of stressors from their built and natural environments when compared to children from other races/ethnicities. Our objectives were to identify chemical and non-chemical stressors from AI/AN children's built and natural environments and evaluate their linkages with health and well-being outcomes from the peer reviewed literature. Library databases (e.g. PubMed) were searched to i

Influences of the built environment in physical activity participation in individuals with disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity remains a critical public health concern for individuals with disabilities, who often encounter environmental and structural barriers to participation. Although research on built environment characteristics and physical activity (PA) has expanded, evidence specific to individuals with disabilities remains fragmented and requires clearer conceptual integration. This systematic review synthesises evidence on built environment characteristics associated with PA participation among individuals with disabilities. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across

Rural dengue dynamics: the interplay of climate, built environment, and agriculture in Costa Rica.

Dengue is one of the world's highest-burden arboviral diseases. Although classically considered an urban disease, many regions experience a substantial dengue burden in rural areas. The combined influence of long-term climate, short-term weather variation, local built environments, and land-use gradients on dengue dynamics in rural settings remains poorly understood, limiting our ability to predict shifting risk under global change. Here, we investigate these dynamics in Costa Rica to disentangle how these interacting socio-environmental factors shape rural dengue transmission. We first use 22

Comparison of QIIME1 and QIIME2 for Analyzing Fungal Samples from Various Built Environments.

This study evaluates the differences between bioinformatics pipelines by analyzing samples collected from various built environments. Previous comparative studies of microbial community analysis pipelines have largely focused on bacterial communities, mock communities, or soil fungi, often with small sample sizes, and have not specifically targeted built environments. Our results highlight key differences between OTU (QIIME1) and ASV (QIIME2) analyses. OTU analysis clusters OTUs at 97% similarity and tends to show higher diversity values in diversity analyses. Regarding abundantly detected fun

Evacuation solutions for individuals with functional limitations in the built environment: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Whether due to aging, disability, injury, or other circumstances, an increasing number of Canadians experience functional limitations that reduce their ability to participate in activities of daily life. While the built environment has become increasingly accessible, existing Canadian evacuation guidelines lack comprehensive strategies for evacuating individuals with functional limitations from buildings during emergencies. To inform guideline revisions, a map of existing solutions for evacuating such individuals is required. Therefore, this scoping review aims to provide an accoun

Inequality in the built environment underlies key health disparities in physical activity and obesity.

CONTEXT: Environmental factors are suggested to play a major role in physical activity (PA) and other obesity-related behaviors, yet there is no national research on the relationship between disparity in access to recreational facilities and additional impact on PA and overweight patterns in US adolescents. OBJECTIVE: In a nationally representative cohort, we sought to assess the geographic and social distribution of PA facilities and how disparity in access might underlie population-level PA and overweight patterns. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Residential locations of US adolescents

[Walkability in older age: built environment factors and function-sensitive assessment in urban areas].

Walkability describes how supportive a neighbourhood is for walking and is a key concept for promoting mobility, physical activity and social participation in older age. However, existing approaches do not adequately reflect the specific needs of older adults, especially in the presence of functional limitations. This article outlines how walkability can be further conceptualised, measured in a function-sensitive way and empirically examined in an urban context. The paper presents an age-specific operationalization framework for walkability based on the authors' previous work and a Delphi conse

Built and socioeconomic environment: associations with cancer-risk health behaviors among healthy emerging adults.

Health compromising behaviors such as tobacco use, binge drinking, physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, obesity, and inadequate sleep are associated with increased cancer risk. Emerging adults (age 18-29) may be especially vulnerable to engaging in health compromising behaviors due to the transitional nature and novel independence during this developmental period. The current study uses data from the 2022 Health Information Trends Survey Data Linkage Project to understand relationships between aspects of the built environment (i.e., the Food Environment and the Exercise Environment) and ar

Investigating built environment and traffic flow impact on crash frequency in urban road networks.

While numerous studies have examined the factors that influence crash occurrence, there remains a gap in understanding the intricate relationship between built environment, traffic flow, and crash occurrences across different spatial units. This study explores how built environment attributes, and dynamic traffic flow characteristics affect crash frequency by focusing on proposed traffic density-based zones (TDZs). Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from Greater Melbourne, Australia, this research emphasizes on the dynamic traffic flow variables and insights from the Macroscopic Fundamental Dia

Built-environment risk assessment for pedestrians near bus-stops: a case study in Delhi.

Pedestrian safety is a serious concern in the developing nations of the world. It is evident from the past studies that built-environment characteristics near bus-stops, play a crucial role on the frequency and overall share of pedestrian deaths and injuries in road traffic crashes. The present study aims to identify critical built-environment features around vulnerable bus-stops in an Indian city and evaluate the odds of risk that prevails on the safety of pedestrians near bus stops. Hotspot analysis was conducted to finalise 177 bus stop sites within high-crash clusters in the study area. Bu

Fomite workshop recommendations addressing the role of surfaces in virus transmission in the built environment.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a need to assess the role of fomites in viral transmission within the built environment. Assessing the role of fomites is necessary for developing intervention strategies for controlling emerging pathogens. A fomite workshop with experts was convened in November 2024 by academia, several government agencies, and public health officials to evaluate existing data and discuss how to mitigate risks. Fomite transmission is influenced by the nature of the built environment, population density and proximity, environmental factors (humidity, heat, etc.), virus su

Human microbiome transfer in the built environment differs based on occupants, objects, and buildings.

Compared to microbiomes on other skin sites, the bacterial microbiome of the human hand has been found to have greater variability across time. To increase understanding regarding the longitudinal transfer of the hand microbiome to objects in the built environment, and vice versa, 22 participants provided skin microbiome samples from their dominant hands, as well as from frequently and infrequently touched objects in their office environments. Additional longitudinal samples from home environments were obtained from a subset of 11 participants. We observed stability of the microbiomes of both

Functional brain connectivity during exposure to the scale and color of interior built environments.

Understanding brain activity linked to built environment exposure is important, as it may affect underlying cognitive, perceptual, and emotional processes, which have a critical influence in our daily life. As our time spent inside buildings is rising, and mental health problems have become more prevalent, it is important we investigate how design characteristics of the built environment impact brain function. In this study, we utilized electroencephalography to understand whether the design elements of scale and color of interior built environments modulate functional brain connectivity (i.e.

Built environment and the metropolitan pandemic: Analysis of the COVID-19 spread in Hong Kong.

The COVID-19 reported initially in December 2019 led to thousands and millions of people infections, deaths at a rapid scale, and a global scale. Metropolitans suffered serious pandemic problems as the built environments of metropolitans contain a large number of people in a relatively small area and allow frequent contacts to let virus spread through people's contacting with each other. The spread inside a metropolitan is heterogeneous, and we propose that the spatial variation of built environments has a measurable association with the spread of COVID-19. This paper is the pioneering work to

Effects of built environment on bicycle wrong Way riding behavior: A data-driven approach.

Bicycle wrong way riding (WWR) is a dangerous and often neglected behavior that engenders threats to traffic safety. Owing to the lack of exposure data, the detection of WWR and its relationship with the built environment (BE) factors remain unclear. Accordingly, this study fills the research gaps by proposing a WWR detection framework based on bike-sharing trajectories collected from Chengdu, China. Moreover, this study adopts Negative Binomial-based Additive Decision Tree to investigate the impacts of built environment on WWR frequencies. Results reveal that (1) WWR distribution is unaffecte
