Symbolic metal bit and saddlebag fastenings in a Middle Bronze Age donkey burial.

Here we report the unprecedented discovery of the skeleton of a ritually interred donkey with a metal horse bit in association with its teeth and saddlebag fastenings on its back. This discovery in the Middle Bronze Age III sacred precinct (1700/1650-1550 BCE) at Tel Haror, Israel, presents a unique combination of evidence for the early employment of equid harnessing equipment, both for chariot bridling (horse bit) and pack animals (saddlebags). The ritually deposited donkey with its unique accoutrements advances our understanding of the broad social and religious significance of equids in the

Resolution of Strain Abnormalities During Extracorporeal Rewarming From Accidental Hypothermic Cardiac Arrest Following Avalanche Burial.

A hypothermic avalanche victim underwent, during extracorporeal warming from asystolic arrest, 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. At 33°C core temperature, left ventricular ejection fraction had recovered, whereas myocardial strain still demonstrated significant dysfunction until 36°C. Deformation analysis seems more sensitive than global assessment during myocardial recovery from hypothermic cardiac arrest. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

Prehispanic (Guanches) mummies and natrium salts in burial caves of Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife).

The prehispanic population of Tenerife (Guanches) buried their dead in caves. Many corpses are totally or partially mummified. Embalming procedures are largely unknown, besides some information recorded by chroniclers and the general idea that environmental conditions in some areas may favour natural mummification. Detailed observation of burial caves containing mummified corpses revealed the presence of a white mineral in form of crusts or powder that was not present in the vast majority of non-burial caves, especially in basaltic and trachybasaltic lava flows. We analysed these crusts and th

First burials give insights into mortuary rites at Göbeklitepe, Early Neolithic Türkiye.

Since the beginning of excavations at Göbeklitepe, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) site in southeastern Türkiye, fragmented human bones have been recovered from the fill of the special (monumental) buildings. These fragments derive from males and females of all age categories and exhibit various taphonomic alterations. Compared with contemporaneous Anatolian burial customs, certain parallels exist; however, the seemingly random distribution of human bone fragments at Göbeklitepe remains enigmatic. Recently, the first two intact burials were discovered in Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (8,700-8,000 BCE)

The outcasts, the sick, and the undead: atypical burials of the late medieval to modern greater Poland.

Past burial practices can provide insights into the social status of the inhumed and inform us of how the individuals were perceived by their community. Atypical or "deviant" burials may indicate that the deceased was considered an outcast, either due to disease, different provenance, criminal activity, or religious beliefs. To explore the importance of atypical burial practices in medieval and modern Poland, an interdisciplinary study was conducted on three Polish cemeteries (Dzwonowo, Skoki, and Wągrowiec) dating to the 14th -18th centuries CE. Twelve individuals were examined using archaeol

Surviving 20 Hours of Critical Avalanche Burial and a Core Temperature of 22.5 °C.

A 24-year-old male snowboarder was buried in an avalanche for 20 h and rescued on the next day at a depth of 2.3 m below the snow surface. A large air pocket was noted in front of his mouth and nose. He was responsive but moved restlessly and uncoordinatedly. The epitympanic temperature was 22.5 °C. He was bradycardic (35/min), and a right bundle branch block with Osborn waves was noted. Rewarming (1 °C/h) was initiated with continuous hemodialysis; core temperature raised to 29.8 °C within 4 h. At 30 °C he became conscious. With rewarming, the heart rate increased to 90 beats per minute and t

Effects of waves, burial depth and material density on microplastic retention in coastal sediments.

Coastal sediments, recognized as a major sink for microplastics (MPs), are subject to frequent physical disturbances, such as wave disturbance and associated sediment dynamics. Yet it remains poorly understood how wave disturbance regulates MPs accumulation in such a dynamic environment. Here, we examined the effects of waves and their interactions with material density and burial depth on the retention of MPs in coastal sediments, through manipulative experiments in a mangrove habitat along the coast of South China. The results clearly revealed that stronger waves removed more buried MPs from

Rebuilding of the Burial Environment from the Chemical Biography of Archeological Copper-Based Artifacts.

The long-term interaction between Cu-based alloys and environmental species gives rise to the formation of different and sometimes unusual compounds (i.e., the patina) with distinctive chemical and structural features as a function of the peculiar characteristics of the context. In this paper, we describe some representative case studies concerning degraded bronze Roman valuable or common use objects, and we show that an attentive study at a microscale level, as for forensic analysis, allows one to understand the chemical processes that underlie the formation of the surface alteration products

A possible case of mycosis in a post-classical burial from La Selvicciola (Italy).

An examination of an adult male buried from the post-classical necropolis of La Selvicciola (Viterbo, Latium, Italy; 4th-6th centuries AD) revealed a series of skeletal lesions. The lesions, both proliferative and lytic, ranging in size from small (around 0.01 mm) to extensive (up to 16.00 mm) pits, occurred at multiple sites. A holistic approach assessed lesion type, frequency and location in a differential diagnosis, which included myeloma, metastatic carcinoma, tuberculosis, leukemia, osteomyelitis, and mycoses. It was concluded that a mycosis, specifically Cryptococcosis, was the most like

The genome of a Late Pleistocene human from a Clovis burial site in western Montana.

Clovis, with its distinctive biface, blade and osseous technologies, is the oldest widespread archaeological complex defined in North America, dating from 11,100 to 10,700 (14)C years before present (bp) (13,000 to 12,600 calendar years bp). Nearly 50 years of archaeological research point to the Clovis complex as having developed south of the North American ice sheets from an ancestral technology. However, both the origins and the genetic legacy of the people who manufactured Clovis tools remain under debate. It is generally believed that these people ultimately derived from Asia and were dir

Biological and social implications of a medieval burial from Cyprus for understanding leprosy in the past.

An early 15th-century burial from a basilica at Polis Chrysochous provides the first archaeological evidence of leprosy in Cyprus, extending the temporal depth and illuminating the biological and social history of this disease on the island. The skeletal remains of a young adult female (age 20-34 years) display pathognomonic features of lepromatous leprosy including maxillary alveolar resorption with antemortem loss of all but one incisor, remodeling of the margin of the nasal sill and resorption of the anterior nasal spine, with diaphyseal remodeling of hand and foot phalanges and the distal

[Historical and biological approaches to the study of Modern Age French plague mass burials].

The "Black Death" and subsequent epidemics from 1346 to the early 18th century spread from the Caspian Sea all over Europe six hundred years after the outbreak of the Justinian plague (541-767 AD). Plague has been one of the most devastating infectious diseases that affected the humankind and has caused approximately 200 million human deaths historically. Here we describe the different approaches adopted in the study of several French putative plague mass burials dating to the Modern Age (16th-18th centuries). Through complementation of historical, archaeological and paleobiological data, ampl

Asphyxial Mechanisms in Sand Burial, Findings and Diagnostic Challenges-A Case Report and a Literature Review.

Background: Fatal sand burial is a rare and diagnostically challenging entity in forensic practice. In such cases, death may result from thoracic or thoracoabdominal compression, airway obstruction by particulate material, massive inhalation of sand or soil, or a combination of these mechanisms. External signs may be subtle or absent, making postmortem interpretation highly dependent on a comprehensive, multilevel assessment. Case Presentation and Methods: We report the case of a 17-year-old male who died following accidental sand burial caused by the collapse of a self-excavated beach tunnel.

Research on comprehensive characterization of deep coal full aperture structure and burial depth effect.

With the increasing depletion of shallow mineral resources, deep mining has become important; however, basic research on deep resource development remains insufficient, and basic laws are unclear. In particular, comprehensive research on the pore structure characteristics of deep coal bodies at different scales is needed, and how burial depth affects pore structure characteristics should be investigated. Herein, this study performed mercury intrusion porosimetry, liquid nitrogen method, and low-temperature carbon dioxide adsorption method to systematically determine the pore structure characte

Forensic examination after exhumation: Contribution and difficulties after more than thirty years of burial.

We report a case of a Tunisian footballer who was found dead abroad under suspicious circumstances. The cause of death was, originally, attributed to a lightning strike. The corpse was buried without/autopsy. Over thirty years later, the family requested the exhumation to verify the identity and the cause of death. The exhumation was performed in 2011. DNA profiling from teeth and femur bone samples confirmed the identity of the deceased. The dry bone study revealed defects in the skull and the pelvis evoking firearm injuries. Post-mortem CT with three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction allowed

Mass burial genomics reveals outbreak of enteric paratyphoid fever in the Late Medieval trade city Lübeck.

Medieval Europe was repeatedly affected by outbreaks of infectious diseases, some of which reached epidemic proportions. A Late Medieval mass burial next to the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital in Lübeck (present-day Germany) contained the skeletal remains of more than 800 individuals who had presumably died from infectious disease. From 92 individuals, we screened the ancient DNA extracts for the presence of pathogens to determine the cause of death. Metagenomic analysis revealed evidence of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Paratyphi C, suggesting an outbreak of enteric paratyphoid fever. T
