Migration of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process.

Soil nanocolloids are highly mobile and can act as carriers for the transport of antibiotics to a wider and deeper range of soils; however, the inherent behavior and mechanism of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in soil remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the migration of antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process using four common soil nanocolloids: kaolin (KL), montmorillonite (MT), hematite (HT), and humic acid (HA). The results showed that nanocolloid carriers promoted the intra-medium (from soil surface to the bottom) an

Genomic Basis of Lifestyle Divergence in Rice-Associated Burkholderia: From Pathogenesis to Plant Growth Promotion.

The genus Burkholderia encompasses both plant pathogenic and beneficial species, yet the genomic determinants underlying this lifestyle divergence remain poorly understood. Using 16S rRNA sequencing of 100 rice cultivars, our companion study demonstrated that resistant varieties are enriched in beneficial Burkholderiaceae, leading to the isolation of three phenotypically contrasting strains. Here, we present comparative genomic analyses of non-pathogenic biocontrol strain Burkholderia vietnamiensis J14EpLeaf2 and pathogenic strains Burkholderia gladioli A1EpSeed5 and Burkholderia cepacia J14Ep

Delineation of Paraburkholderia tuberum and description of Paraburkholderia lebeckiae sp. nov. isolated from the root nodules of South African Lebeckia ambigua.

Paraburkholderia tuberum is a diverse beta-rhizobial species (i.e. rhizobia bacteria belonging to the class Betaproteobacteria) indigenous to South Africa that associates mostly with indigenous papilionoid legume species. The taxonomic boundary of this species was reviewed in 2022, which indicated that it includes a number of diverse strains. In fact, some of these P. tuberum strains appear to have sufficient genetic heterogeneity to belong to separate species. The absence of publicly available whole-genome sequences for the majority of P. tuberum strains during the last review of their taxono

Spatial and Temporal Structure of Environmentally-Acquired Caballeronia Symbionts of a Leaffooted Bug.

Animals that acquire beneficial microbial symbionts from their environment risk acquiring a sub-optimal partner, or no partner at all. The leaffooted bug Leptoglossus zonatus (Coreidae) acquires its Caballeronia (Burkholderiaceae) bacterial symbiont from the environment, presumably from local soil. Despite large contributions to the bug's fitness, young nymphs must re-acquire the symbiont every generation. To understand how the environmental reservoir of symbiont lineages shapes the insect's biology, we examined the role of space and time in the distribution of Burkholderia sensu lato (includi

Minimizing decompression and warming during deep seawater collection increases abundance and activity of autochthonous bacteria and archaea.

The deep ocean hosts autochthonous pressure-adapted microorganisms that are unique to this environment, as well as allochthonous pressure-sensitive members transported from shallow depths by vertical advection and particle-sinking. However, conventional sampling instruments decompress and warm deep-sea samples during retrieval, potentially altering microbial properties when studied ex situ. Here, we assess this potential sampling bias by comparing seawater microbial communities collected with or without measures aimed at minimizing pressure and temperature effects. When compared to samples col

Diet-Induced Shifts in the Hindgut Microbiome Leads to Subtle Changes in Gut and Liver Function of a Marine Herbivorous Fish.

AbstractThe diet of an organism can influence various biological processes, including digestion. By examining how dietary changes can shift gut physiology in an herbivorous fish, we can gain insight into what that species can tolerate in terms of dietary shifts. Thus, we investigated how gut mass, digestive enzyme activity, hindgut microbial diversity, levels of gastrointestinal fermentation, and hindgut and liver transcriptomics respond to dietary perturbations in the marine herbivorous fish Cebidichthys violaceus. Contrary to our expectations, fish fed an omnivore diet (45% protein) in the l

Deciphering the mobility and bacterial hosts of antibiotic resistance genes under antibiotic selection pressure by metagenomic assembly and binning approaches.

The presence of antibiotics can exert significant selection pressure on the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). However, co-selection effects for ARGs, the mobility of ARGs and the identification of ARG hosts under high antibiotic selection pressures are poorly understood. Here, metagenomic assembly and binning approaches were used to comprehensively decipher the prevalence of ARGs and their potential mobility and hosts in activated sludge reactors treating antibiotic production wastewater. We found the abundance of different ARG

Acute liver injury is triggered by dysbiosis and microbial translocation involving gut-liver axis.

Acute liver injury (ALI) is a severe clinical condition that can progress to chronic liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma, yet therapeutic options remain limited. Here, we investigated how hepatotoxin-induced gut-liver dysbiosis drives hepatic inflammation through microbial crosstalk. Using three murine ALI models, we assessed liver injury, intestinal barrier integrity, microbial composition along the gut-liver axis, and immune activation. Each hepatotoxin recapitulated distinct features of human ALI and induced unique patterns of hepatic and intestinal injury, enabling the pr

Subchronic arsenic exposure induced intestinal microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal inflammation via activating the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Arsenic is a prevalent environmental contaminant found in contaminated drinking water. However, the effects of arsenic exposure on the intestinal tract and the specific mechanisms of action remain unclear. In this study, we utilized subchronic sodium arsenite (NaAsO2)-exposed mice and the NaAsO2-treated human colon mucosal epithelial cell line 460 (NCM460) models to investigate the intestinal damage induced by arsenic. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining revealed that the intestines of mice exposed to arsenic exhibited histological damage, characterized by the destruction of epithelial cells, a re

Stage-Specific Microbiota Transitions Throughout Black Soldier Fly Ontogeny.

The growing global population increases the demand for protein, while organic waste management has become more challenging. Alternative protein sources are essential to mitigate the environmental impact of food production. The black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) has emerged as an alternative to traditional protein sources (e.g., soybean meal, fishmeal) due to its ability to convert diverse organic waste, addressing both issues simultaneously. This makes the BSF a promising candidate for industrial rearing, with its successful development closely tied to microbial influences on growth an

Alterations in Gut Microbiota and Upregulations of VPAC2 and Intestinal Tight Junctions Correlate with Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Electroacupuncture in Colitis Mice with Sleep Fragmentation.

The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease and sleep disturbances is complicated and of increasing interest. We investigated the inflammatory and immunological consequences of EA in sleep-deprived colitis and found that dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in sleep-fragmented (SF) mice was more severe than that in mice with normal sleep. This increase in the severity of colitis was accompanied by reduced body weight, shortened colon length, and deteriorated disease activity index. DSS with SF mice presented obvious diminished intestinal tight junction proteins (claudin-1 and o

Pandoraea Infections in Humans-A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives:Pandoraea species are Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that belong to the Burkholderiaceae family and the Betaproteobacteria class. Despite their rare occurrence in the general population, they have been increasingly observed as the causes of infection in immunocompromised individuals or patients with severe comorbidities. The present review seeks to examine all documented cases of Pandoraea spp. infections in humans, focusing on data related to epidemiology, microbiology, antimicrobial susceptibility, treatment options, and mortality rates. Methods: A systemat

Implications of Microorganisms in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a deadly brain degenerative disorder that leads to brain shrinkage and dementia. AD is manifested with hyperphosphorylated tau protein levels and amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide buildup in the hippocampus and cortex regions of the brain. The nervous tissue of AD patients also contains fungal proteins and DNA which are linked to bacterial infections, suggesting that polymicrobial infections also occur in the brains of those with AD. Both immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques were employed to assess fungal and bacterial infections in the brain

The structure of PhaZ7 at atomic (1.2 A) resolution reveals details of the active site and suggests a substrate-binding mode.

Poly-(R)-hydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bacterial polyesters that are degraded by a group of enzymes known as PHA depolymerases. Paucimonas lemoignei PhaZ7 depolymerase is the only extracellular depolymerase that has been described as being active towards amorphous PHAs. A previously determined crystal structure of PhaZ7 revealed an alpha/beta-hydrolase fold and a Ser-His-Asp catalytic triad. In order to address questions regarding the catalytic mechanism and substrate binding, the atomic resolution structure of PhaZ7 was determined after cocrystallization with the protease inhibitor PMSF. Development and validation of Burkholderia pseudomallei-specific real-time PCR assays for clinical, environmental or forensic detection applications.

The bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei causes melioidosis, a rare but serious illness that can be fatal if untreated or misdiagnosed. Species-specific PCR assays provide a technically simple method for differentiating B. pseudomallei from near-neighbor species. However, substantial genetic diversity and high levels of recombination within this species reduce the likelihood that molecular signatures will differentiate all B. pseudomallei from other Burkholderiaceae. Currently available molecular assays for B. pseudomallei detection lack rigorous validation across large in silico datasets and i
