The Caatinga is a semi-arid biome in northeast Brazil. The Paraguaçú River is located in the Caatinga biome, and part of its course is protected by the National Park of Chapada Diamantina (PNCD). In this study we evaluated the effect of PNCD protection on the water quality and microbial community diversity of this river by analyzing water samples obtained from points located inside and outside the PNCD in both wet and dry seasons. Results of water quality analysis showed higher levels of silicate, ammonia, particulate organic carbon, and nitrite in samples from the unprotected area compared wi

Coral reefs are deteriorating at an alarming rate mainly as a consequence of the emergence of coral diseases. The white plague disease (WPD) is the most prevalent coral disease in the southwestern Caribbean, affecting dozens of coral species. However, the identification of a single causal agent has proved problematic. This suggests more complex etiological scenarios involving alterations in the dynamic interaction between environmental factors, the coral immune system and the symbiotic microbial communities. Here we compare the microbiome of healthy and WPD-affected corals from the two reef-bu

Microplastics are nearly ubiquitous in the natural environment. There is increasing awareness of the ingestion of microplastics in a wide range of wild animals and humans, but their health and fitness impacts remain poorly understood. Mounting evidence suggests that microplastics could accumulate in the gut, affecting the microbiome and hindering its function. This may constitute a direct pathway through which exposure to microplastics could affect health and disease. However, prior studies on the effects of microplastic exposure on the microbiome show contrasting findings raising the question

INTRODUCTION: Globally, Osteoarthritis (OA) represents a primary chronic joint condition, rooted in complex mechanisms such as metabolic irregularities, synovitis, immune system responses, and body-wide inflammation. Emerging evidence highlights gut microbiota as a critical mediator of joint inflammation.
METHODS: In this study, 55 OA patients from the affiliated hospital of Anhui Medical University were compared with 55 healthy controls. Using 16S rRNA (V4-V5) sequencing and POS/NEG dualionmode untargeted fecal metabolomics, we investigated the "gutmetabolismimmunityjoint" axis in OA.

Ultrafiltration (UF) can effectively remove large particles, suspended solids, and colloidal substances from anaerobic digestate. However, membrane fouling is a technical challenge in the purification of the digestate by UF. In this study, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with four pore sizes (50.0, 20.0, 10.0 and 5.0 kDa) were employed to filter anaerobic digestate from swine manure. The effects of temperature, transmembrane pressure (TMP), and cross-flow velocity (CFV) on flux were investigated. The purification effects and fouling characteristics of the four membranes were analyzed. The res

Pathogenic bacteria often use effector molecules to increase virulence. In most cases, the mode of action of effectors remains unknown. Strains of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) secrete syringolin A (SylA), a product of a mixed non-ribosomal peptide/polyketide synthetase, in planta. Here we identify SylA as a virulence factor because a SylA-negative mutant in Pss strain B728a obtained by gene disruption was markedly less virulent on its host, Phaseolus vulgaris (bean). We show that SylA irreversibly inhibits all three catalytic activities of eukaryotic proteasomes, thus adding proteas

Glidobactins (syn. cepafungins) are a family of structurally related cytotoxic compounds that were isolated from the soil bacterial strain K481-B101 (ATCC 53080; DSM 7029) originally assigned to Polyangium brachysporum and, independently, from an undefined species related to Burkholderia cepacia. Glidobactins are acylated tripeptide derivatives that contain a 12-membered ring structure consisting of the two unique non-proteinogenic amino acids erythro-4-hydroxy-l-lysine and 4(S)-amino-2(E)-pentenoic acid. Here we report the cloning and functional analysis of a gene cluster (glbA-glbH) involved

Achromobacter spp. are aerobic, non-fermentative, Gram-negative opportunistic pathogens belonging to the family Alcaligenaceae, order Burkholderiales, and are widely distributed in natural environments such as soil and water. In patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), Achromobacter spp. have emerged as increasingly prevalent opportunistic pathogens, with detection rates in respiratory samples rising from approximately 2-3% in the 1990s and early 2000s to 7-10% by the early 2020s in European and North American registries, although reported rates vary considerably by center, age group, and identific

Sulfur-based denitrification offers unique advantages in nitrogen removal in low-carbon environments. Despite its importance, the prevalence, controlling factors, and microbial mediators of sulfur-based denitrification in aquifers remain largely unknown. By integrating multiple stable isotopes and genome-resolved metagenomics, we investigated the coupling of nitrogen and sulfur cycling along the groundwater flowpath from unconfined to confined alluvial-lacustrine aquifers in the Poyang Lake Plain, China. Climate change amplifies cyanobacterial blooms, creating a feedback loop between warming and bloom intensity. This dynamic emphasizes the need to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during in-situ cyanobacterial control, minimizing algicides use and its long-term climatic impacts. However, research on the dose-response of algicides on GHG emissions is limited. This study investigated the dose-dependent effects of artemisinin sustained-release algicides (ASAs) on GHG emissions and microbial dynamics during cyanobacteria recovery prevention. Microcosm experiments revealed that ASAs dosage res

Acrylamide (AA) has been extensively examined for its potential toxicological effects on humans and animals, but its impacts on gut microbiota and effects on hosts' susceptibility to enteric infection remain elusive. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of AA on gut microbiota of mice and susceptibility of mice to S. Typhimurium infection. After four weeks' intervention, mice fed with AA exhibited significantly decreased body weight. Meanwhile, 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed reduced relative abundance of Firmicutes and increased abundance of Bacteroidetes in AA-treated mice p

Two fosmid libraries, totaling 13,200 clones, were obtained from bioreactor sludge of petroleum refinery wastewater treatment system. The library screening based on PCR and biological activity assays revealed more than 400 positive clones for phenol degradation. From these, 100 clones were randomly selected for pyrosequencing in order to evaluate the genetic potential of the microorganisms present in wastewater treatment plant for biodegradation, focusing mainly on novel genes and pathways of phenol and aromatic compound degradation. The sequence analysis of selected clones yielded 129,635 rea

Research on the gut-brain-immune axis shows it plays a critical role in ischemic stroke, but the exact causal links between gut bacteria imbalance, immune system problems, and brain blood vessel damage remain unclear. To investigate this, we combined multiple types of biological data using a statistical method called Bayesian weighted Mendelian randomization (BWMR). We analyzed large genetic datasets covering 731 immune cell traits, 91 inflammatory proteins, 412 gut microbes and their pathways, and ischemic stroke cases. Shared genetic variants were confirmed using colocalization, and we used

BACKGROUND: Clinical observations indicate a correlation between the gut microbiota and overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. Nevertheless, the causal relationship and mechanisms between gut microbiota and OAB symptoms remain elusive.
METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to assess the association between gut microbiota and OAB symptoms, including urinary incontinence (UI). Data were obtained from the MiBioGen International Consortium genome-wide association studies (GWAS) dataset and the IEU GWAS database. The inverse variance weighted method was used as the p

Flax-sesame crop rotation is an effective phytoremediation method for cadmium (Cd)-contaminated farmland. To investigate the effect of drainage on the uptake efficiency of soil Cd by the crops, field experiments were conducted to analyze the migration of Cd, iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn), and the soil microbial community. Compared with conventional drainage, the deep furrow treatment increased the Cd2 + accumulated in the flax and sesame organs by up to 73.9 % and decreased the soil Cd2+ content by 4.7 %-7.7 %. The accumulation of Fe2+/Fe3+ and Mn2+ showed the same trend as that of Cd. In the

BACKGROUND: Several studies indicated that chronic periodontitis (CP) and its subgingival bacteria correlated with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Previous research has shown that prevalence of IgAN in chronic periodontitis patients is significantly higher than that in non CP patients in Xinjiang especially in ethnic Uyghur. The aim of this study is to investigate the distribution of plaque bacterial microbes in CP and IgAN patients and to find correlation between CP and IgAN.
METHODS: All of the subgingival plaque samples including 7 healthy controls (N group), 8 CP patients, 14 IgAN patients, and 1

Vi antigen is an extracellular polysaccharide produced by Salmonella enterica Typhi, Citrobacter freundii, and some soil bacteria belonging to the Burkholderiales. In Salmonella Typhi, Vi-antigen capsule protects the bacterium against host defenses, and the glycan is used in a current glycoconjugate vaccine to protect against typhoid. Vi antigen is a glycolipid assembled in the cytoplasm and translocated to the cell surface by an export complex driven by an ABC transporter. In Salmonella Typhi, efficient export and cell-surface retention of the capsule layer depend on a reducing terminal acyla

BACKGROUND: Interest in the interplay between host genetics and the gut microbiome in complex human diseases is increasing, with prior evidence mainly being derived from animal models. In addition, the shared and distinct microbiome features among complex human diseases remain largely unclear.
RESULTS: This analysis was based on a Chinese population with 1475 participants. We estimated the SNP-based heritability, which suggested that Desulfovibrionaceae and Odoribacter had significant heritability estimates (0.456 and 0.476, respectively). We performed a microbiome genome-wide association stu
