Electrical burn causing a unique pattern of neurological injury.

Neurological involvement is not uncommon in patients who sustain electrical injury. The exact mechanism of nervous system damage following electrical trauma is not fully understood. The gamut of possible neurologic manifestations following electrical injury is diverse. This case report describes a young man with a unique pattern of neurological injury following an electrical burn. The combination of brachial plexopathy, partial Horner's syndrome, and phrenic nerve palsy secondary to electrical injury has not been previously described in the literature.

Electrical burn is still a major risk factor for amputations.

Many difficult decisions are faced in the early management of severely burned patient. The decision to amputate an extremity or extremities may be very difficult but reduce morbidity and enhance survival of the patient. In a total of 1144 patients from January 2000 and June 2011, there were 44 patients (3.8%) undergoing amputations of the digits or upper extremity proximal to the wrist or lower extremity above the ankle. Amputations were significantly higher in males and the mean hospitalization time was also significantly higher in these patients. Majority of the patients had non-viable tissu

Oral electrical burns in children-a model of multidisciplinary care.

Electrical burns of the mouth are the most common electrical injury in children and can have serious, long-term functional and aesthetic consequences. Presented is a review of the pathogenesis of the associated injury and sequelae, as well as a case report. In the presented case, a multidisciplinary approach was used with input from pediatric dentistry, plastic/burn surgery, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. This collaborative effort and a novel microstomia prevention device produced a superior functional and aesthetic result. Without the aid of a microstomia device, the resultant contractur

Neurological sequelae following a high voltage electrical burn.

Neurological complications secondary to electrical injury can manifest themselves either early or late. A small percentage of these patients develop delayed peripheral neuropathy. However, patients experiencing transient spinal cord symptoms have been described. We describe the development of a lower motor neurone syndrome affecting all the limbs in a patient following a significant electrical injury, which although expected to cause spinal cord necrosis showed no evidence of this on magnetic resonance imaging. The fact that neurophysiology was unable to localize the problem made this case all

Long thoracic nerve injury due to an electric burn.

A 19-year-old white man was burned over 7.5% of his body when he sustained an electric injury from a transformer. There was no associated fall or loss of consciousness. Debridement and grafting were required. The patient had some transient weakness of the muscles of his right arm associated with lower cervical nerve-root injury. This subsequently improved. He also was found to have paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle, with winging of the scapula due to long thoracic nerve injury. This has not improved. A surgical procedure suggested to improve function of the shoulder was rejected by the

The Frequency and Reason For Amputations in Electrically Burned Pediatric Patients.

Electrical injuries induce substantial morbidity and mortality. Amputations are often necessary to enable survival and based on tissue nonviability, development of life-threatening infection, or expected nonfunctional outcome. They analyzed occurrence and type of amputations in their institution for electrical and nonelectrical pediatric burns and the number of reconstructive operations. Patients who underwent any amputation between 1999 and 2017 were identified. Patients with electrical burns (EB) were matched regarding age, sex, and percent total body surface area (%TBSA) burned to patients

Evaluation of quantum of disability as sequelae of electric burn injuries.

BACKGROUND: All will agree that invention of electricity has changed the world. Today nobody can think of living without an uninterrupted supply. Electricity is definitely a boon to the mankind but this turns into a curse when it becomes a cause of disaster. Electrical burn injuries are the most destructive injuries with a potential of causing significant functional disability and extensive disfigurement in the survivors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective observational study on the 110 patients of electric burns admitted to our hospital between January 2007 and October 201

The Krukenberg procedure in the bilateral amputee after electrical burn.

Nine Krukenberg procedures were performed in 5 bilateral amputee patients suffering severe electrical injuries of both hands and wrists. The surgical procedure yielded functioning pincers in 7 of 9 operations. The patients could perform their daily activities very well and showed pronounced improvement in their self-confidence, self-reliance, and quality of life. The postoperative rehabilitation of these patients was not difficult. The Krukenberg procedure should be considered a substitute for prosthesis, especially in developing countries.

Multiple seagull flaps for digital contractures in electrical burns.

Following legislation in the early 1970s, electrical bar fire burns are much less common in the UK than 20 years ago. However, their long-term effects are still encountered as microdactyly, syndactyly and digital flexion contractures. A case is described in which multiple seagull flaps were used as a single stage procedure to achieve sustained improvement in function in a severely affected hand, 10 years after injury, without prolonged postoperative daytime splintage.
