Comparative analysis of pomological and phytochemical characteristics in white- and red-fleshed pitaya (Hylocereus spp.), with molecular docking insights into key bioactive compounds.

BACKGROUND: Cacti, including pitaya (Hylocereus spp.), are rich in antioxidants that will undoubtedly gain importance under ongoing climate change as water resources decline. Yet the molecular basis linking composition to antioxidant function remains incompletely defined. We compared white-fleshed H. undatus and red-fleshed H. polyrhizus across physicochemical traits, integrating correlation, principal component analysis, and molecular docking to a human iron-regulatory protein (IRP1). RESULTS: White-fleshed fruits were larger and heavier (length 103.4 mm; width 60.2 mm; weight 204.7 g) than

Integrated metabolic profiles and microbial communities to reveal the beneficial effect of red pitaya on early constipation.

Pitaya is a well-known fruit widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical tropical regions, and is characterized by its flesh colour into red, white, and yellow pitaya. Red pitaya has dark red flesh and is the preferred choice among consumers due to its superior taste compared to other varieties. Red pitaya has been known to cause diarrhoea, and studies have reported that pitaya does this by drawing moisture into the intestines, resulting in defecation. However, the exact mechanism of action is still unclear. In this study, mass spectrometry was employed to identify small molecular compounds

Cactus cladode juice as a molasses replacement in urea-multi-nutrient blocks: effects on intake, milk yield, composition, and estimated enteric methane emissions in crossbred dairy cows in dryland Waghimra, Ethiopia.

Molasses is an important component of urea-multi-nutrient blocks (UMMBs), but its high cost and inconsistent availability can limit their use in dryland livestock systems. This study evaluated the effects of replacing cane molasses with cactus cladode juice in UMMBs on intake, milk production, milk composition, and estimated enteric methane emission intensity in lactating crossbred dairy cows. Sixteen mid-lactation local Zebu × Holstein Friesian crossbred cows were assigned to four treatments in a randomized complete block design based on initial milk yield and body weight. Treatments consiste

Effects of Bermudagrass hay and soybean hulls inclusion on performance of sheep fed cactus-based diets.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of replacing corn with soybean hulls (SH) or Bermudagrass tifton hay (TH) on performance of sheep fed cactus-based diets. Three ruminally fistulated sheep were used in a 3 x 3 Latin square experiment with 21-day periods. All diets contained 75% spineless cactus (dry matter basis, DM) and formulated to be isonitrogenous. Fiber source had no influence on nutrient intakes except for the intake of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) which was lower (p<0.05) for animals fed corn relative to those fed SH or TH. Time expended in rumination and t

[Conjunctival granuloma following neglected thorn injury: about a case].

It is sometimes difficult to detect a plant intraocular foreign body, mostly in cases where the history of ocular trauma is unclear, or in patients who consult several months after the trauma. We report a rare case of a 7 year old child with self inflicted trauma of the the left eye by a cactus thorn 3 months before admission, which resulted in a temporal conjunctival granuloma with higher inflammatory reaction of the anterior segment. Surgical exploration was performed allowing the extraction of the thorn with total excision of the granuloma. A slight clinical improvement in visual acuity was

A common Caatinga cactus, Pilosocereus gounellei, is an important ecotope of wild Triatoma brasiliensis populations in the Jaguaribe valley of northeastern Brazil.

Triatoma brasiliensis is the most important vector of Chagas disease in the Caatinga eco-region of northeastern Brazil. Wild T. brasiliensis populations have been reported only from rocky outcrops. However, this species frequently infests/re-infests houses in rock-free sedimentary lowlands. We therefore hypothesized that it should also occupy other natural ecotopes. We show that a common Caatinga cactus, Pilosocereus gounellei, locally known as xiquexique, often harbors T. brasiliensis breeding colonies apparently associated with rodents (n = 44 cacti, infestation rate = 47.7%, 157 bugs captur

The effect of cactus spines on light interception and Photosystem II for three sympatric species of Opuntia from the Mojave Desert.

Cactus spines reduce herbivory, direct water toward roots and reduce the impacts of high- and low-temperature extremes. Yet, shading of stems by spines reduces incident photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD), photosynthesis and growth. This study compared spinescence, PFD interception, stem temperature, Photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and xanthophyll pigment composition for three species of cacti from the Mojave Desert, CA. The species vary in spinescence: Opuntia basilaris, which has no central or radial spines; Opuntia erinacea, which is densely covered with spines; and Opuntia phaeac

Mechanical Properties and Fabrication of Bioinspired Cactus Spine Microneedles.

Microneedle-based transdermal drug delivery enables painless and efficient drug administration but is limited by insufficient mechanical strength and high insertion forces. Inspired by the efficient penetration capability of cactus spines, this study investigated the microstructure and biomechanics of natural cactus spines and bioinspired microneedles. Finite element analysis showed that a groove width of 50 μm produced the highest stress and strain. Solid bioinspired microneedles were fabricated by 3D printing, while dissolvable hyaluronic acid, chitosan, and gelatin microneedles were prepare

Antioxidants into Nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica), Important Inhibitors of Free Radicals' Formation.

Nopal (Opuntia ficus indica) belonging to the Cactacea family has many nutritional benefits attributed to a wide variety of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Coumaric acid (COA), ferulic acid (FLA), protocatechuic acid (PRA), and gallic acid (GAA) are the phenolic acids (PhAs) present in nopal. In this study, the role of these PhAs in copper-induced oxidative stress was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). The PhAs form 5 thermodynamically favorable complexes with Cu(II), their conditional Gibbs free energies of reaction (ΔG', at pH = 7.4, in kcal/mol) are from -23 kcal/mol
