Femoral to sciatic nerve transfer: A cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Proximal sciatic nerve injuries are a challenge to treat due to the limited options for donor nerves and the long distance needed for regeneration. METHODS: In our cadaveric study using five human cadavers, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of transferring the tibial and common peroneal components of the sciatic nerve to the femoral nerve motor branches of the vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis without the need for interposition nerve graft. The femoral nerve branches of the VM and lateralis were exposed anteriorly. The sciatic nerve was exposed posteriorly and passed th

Reconstructive rhinoplasty using cadaver cartilage in relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disorder of unknown cause characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilage predominantly affecting the ears, nose, and upper airway. The bridge of the nose and surrounding tissue can collapse, producing a saddle nose deformity. Nasal reconstruction is often challenging in these patients due to impaired wound healing and graft take caused by autoimmune inflammatory disease and prolonged immunosuppressant treatment. Many different reconstruction techniques like autologous rib, fascia lata, and calvarial bone grafts have been used. Herein we repor

Histologic examination of condensing osteitis in cadaver specimens.

OBJECTIVES: Condensing osteitis is a radiographic finding, but with no reported histologic investigations in humans. The objectives of this study were to evaluate and describe histologically condensing osteitis in human cadaver jaws. Patterns of bone formation and presence/absence and nature of inflammation were examined. METHODS: Specimens of mandibles and maxillas were obtained from cadavers and examined radiographically. Those periapical areas with characteristics of condensing osteitis were removed en bloc, decalcified, and processed for light microscopy. For comparison, specimens that sh

Reliability of Tuffier's line evaluated on cadaver specimens.

The aim was to evaluate the reliability of Tuffier's line usually used as sole method to identify lumbar spinous process for a correct needle placement. Fifty-eight cadaver specimens were placed in a lateral position and a flexion in the lumbar spine performed to achieve a neutralization of the lumbar lordosis. The iliac crests were palpated and the lumbar spinous process marked on the intercristal line with a pin; all specimens were dissected and the marked spinous process documented. The center of the L4 spinous process was hit in 24 male (41.38%) and 10 female (17.24%) specimens. In only tw

Thoracoscopic robot-assisted extended thymectomy in human cadaver.

Thoracoscopic robot-assisted extended thymectomy was performed in a human cadaver. The technique utilized the da Vinci surgical system inserted through the subxiphoid approach with the sternum lifted upward (anteriorly). A small subxiphoid incision and two additional thoracoports were made in the chest wall, and the sternum was lifted by a new lifting retractor system. This method provided sufficient view and working space in the anterior mediastinum. Complete thymectomy was performed with facility. The robotic system provides superior optics and allows for enhanced dexterity. Minimally invasi

Endoscopic gastrocnemius recession: evaluation in a cadaver model.

The purpose of this study was to describe a new method of gastrocnemius recession using an endoscopic approach and to determine the accuracy of incision placement during gastrocnemius recession. Fifteen fresh-frozen cadaveric limbs underwent an endoscopic gastrocnemius recession utilizing a two-portal technique. All limbs were anatomically dissected after the procedure and each was examined for injury to the sural nerve. The ability to visualize the sural nerve intraoperatively, improvement in ankle dorsiflexion, time requirement for the procedure, incision size, and appropriateness of placeme

Three-dimensional analysis of flatfoot deformity: cadaver study.

Eleven fresh-frozen cadaver foot specimens were tested to define changes in tarsal alignment associated with flatfoot, or pes planus, a common clinical problem. The three-dimensional position of four bones (talus, calcaneus, navicular, and first metatarsal) relative to the fixed tibia was determined with a magnetic tracking system in the intact foot and flatfoot conditions. In the flatfoot, the average metatarsal-to-talar position difference was 11.7 degrees +/-4.4 degrees in abduction (P < 0.0001), 10.4 degrees +/-3.6 degrees in dorsiflexion (P < 0.0001), and 10.9 degrees +/-6.0 degrees in ev

Demographic factors influencing consent for cadaver organ donation.

The records of all donor referrals to Groote Schuur Hospital over a 5 1/2-year period were retrospectively examined to determine which factors influenced the families' decision on organ donation. In 35% of these referrals the families were not approached for consent. The reasons for this included the potential donor being unsuitable for organ donation or not meeting all the criteria for brain death. The effects of the age, sex, race and the cause of death of the potential donor on whether the family gave consent were investigated. This study demonstrates that consent was given more readily whe

Principles of multiple organ procurement from cadaver donors.

The need for cadaveric organs other than kidneys for transplantation is increasing. Principles and techniques that allow their procurement without jeopardizing renal recovery are outlined. These include utilization of brain dead donors, careful donor selection, and surgery which minimizes warm ischema while avoiding iatrogenic injury. Utilizing this approach, a variety of combinations of organs have been removed and transplanted resulting in satisfactory functional results.

Pediatric cadaver kidneys. Their use in renal transplantation.

Of 350 consecutive cadaver kidney transplants, 32 kidneys from donors aged 1 day to 9 years were transplanted. Our results indicate that, with strict adherence to certain guidelines in kidney procurement and transplantion, pediatric kidneys are excellent donor graft material. In contrast to en bloc transplantation of both kidneys from pediatric donors, each donor can provide kidneys for two recipients. In addition, the transplantation of pediatric kidneys as single units is both simple and safe.

Anatomical measurements of trigeminal ganglion: a cadaver study.

It is difficult to obtain specific information regarding the trigeminal ganglion (TG), especially pediatric TG. The aim of present study was to determine the parameters of the TG and assist in the neuroablative treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Thirty-seven sides of cadaver heads that had undergone gross anatomical examination were included, with 29 sides of adults and 8 sides of infants. The distance and angles were measured among 12 points, with nine points adjacent to the TG and three points on the foramen ovale (FO). The three points on FO were represented as three different surgical

Medical Students' Views on Cadaver and Organ Donation.

BACKGROUND: Organ and cadaver donation are 2 important issues that contribute to the future of medicine. Organ donation is a miraculous gift and enables the donor to continue to "live" in others. Cadavers are usually part of medical students' first encounters with clinical work and play a very important role in medical education. The attitudes of medical students toward both organ and cadaver donation were evaluated in the current study. METHODS: Sixteen phrases about cadaver and organ donation were presented to the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-year students of the Kafkas University Faculty of

[Epineural methylene blue nerve staining on cadaver hand].

Introduction: Limited fasciectomy is the gold-standard treatment in Dupuytren’s surgery. The anatomical position of digital nerves can be altered by Dupuytren’s tissue resulting in a difficult dissection and localization, with a relatively high risk of iatrogenic nerve injury. This risk could be decreased by using intraoperative neural marking to facilitate locating the potentially displaced nerves. We recently demonstrated in an animal model that in vivo nerve staining with methylene blue is a suitable method to mark nerves without damaging them. Objective: We aimed to test the efficacy of ou

Cadaver-based Necrotizing Fasciitis Model for Medical Training.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a devastating infectious disease process that is characterized by extensive soft tissue necrosis along deep fascial planes, systemic toxicity, and high mortality. Ultrasound imaging is a rapid and non-invasive tool that can be used to help make the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis by identifying several distinctive sonographic findings. The purpose of this study is to describe the construction of a realistic diagnostic training model for necrotizing fasciitis using fresh frozen cadavers and common, affordable materials. Presently, fresh non-embalmed cadavers have bee

Cadaver dogs: unscientific myth or reliable biological devices?

Dogs are commonly used to detect explosives, narcotics, and other illegal materials. In the forensic setting, cadaver dogs are trained to detect and locate concealed human remains or fluids due to the high sensitivity and selectivity of the canine olfactory system and the relative ease with which dogs can be trained and handled. The need for international and scientifically validated standards has long been outlined by the literature. It is important, therefore, to establish the reliability of the handler/dog team. Our study aimed to detect the real effectiveness of dogs trained to locate huma
