Factors moderating cadmium bioavailability: Key considerations for comparing blood cadmium levels between groups.

Cadmium (Cd) is recognized as a significant hazard to human health, with exposure linked to a variety of adverse outcomes including various cancers, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and osteoporosis. Residing in areas contaminated with Cd is undoubtedly a risk factor for developing the aforementioned conditions. However, the risk of developing Cd-related disorders is not uniform among individuals. Deficiencies in iron, zinc, and calcium, along with iron deficiency anemia, decreased lung function often seen in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and low circulating lev

Cadmium-Bacteria Complexation and Subsequent Bacteria-Facilitated Cadmium Transport in Saturated Porous Media.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is becoming a significant environmental concern due to its persistency in soil. In the subsurface, the fate and transport of Cd are significantly affected by the presence of organic carriers, including bacteria, which are ubiquitous. In this research, facilitated Cd transport by four different bacterial strains in zeolite was investigated by column experiments under three different Cd introduction scenarios (i.e., a Cd and bacteria mixture, Cd and bacteria introduced separately but simultaneously, and Cd added to the column, followed by bacterial flushing), through w

Mixotrophic acidophiles increase cadmium soluble fraction and phytoextraction efficiency from cadmium contaminated soils.

A profound concern in developing microbially-assisted phytoextraction is that introduced microbes not only remove heavy metals from contaminated soils but also enhance metal uptake into plant tissues from the treated soils. Cadmium (Cd) removal efficiencies were compared after leaching with deionized water (CK), acidified basal salts medium (acid control), cell-free spent medium (spent bioleaching) and mixotrophic acidophiles (two-step bioleaching). Two-step bioleaching using the mixotrophic acidophiles removed 34% of total Cd and 87% of available Cd, significantly more than CK (3% and 4%), ac

Nephropathy in cadmium workers: assessment of risk from airborne occupational exposure to cadmium.

To assess the quantitative relation between exposure to airborne cadmium and various markers of renal tubular and glomerular function, 45 male workers employed at a plant that recovers cadmium from industrial waste and 32 male hospital workers of similar age and geographical location were examined. Cumulative external exposure to airborne cadmium (dose) was estimated from historical air sampling data, adjusted for respirator use. Increasing cadmium dose was associated with multiple renal tubular functional abnormalities, including reduced reabsorption of beta-2-microglobulin (beta-2), retinol

Relations between liver cadmium, cumulative exposure, and renal function in cadmium alloy workers.

Detailed biochemical investigations of renal function were made on 75 male workers exposed to cadmium and an equal number of referents matched for age, sex, and employment status. The exposed group consisted of current and retired workers who had been employed in the manufacture of copper-cadmium alloy at a single factory in the United Kingdom for periods of up to 39 years and for whom cumulative cadmium exposure indices could be calculated. In vivo measurements of liver and kidney cadmium burden were made on exposed and referent workers using a transportable neutron activation analysis facili

Cadmium Compounds with an [N3C] Atrane Motif: Evidence for the Generation of a Cadmium Hydride Species.

Tris(2-pyridylthio)methane ([Tptm]H) has been employed to synthesize a series of cadmium carbatrane compounds that feature an [N3C] coordination environment. Specifically, [Tptm]H reacts with Cd[N(SiMe3)2]2 to afford [Tptm]CdN(SiMe3)2, which thereby provides access to other derivatives. For example, [Tptm]CdN(SiMe3)2 reacts with (i) CO2 to form {[Tptm]Cd(μ-NCO)}2 and (ii) Me3SiOH and Ph3SiOH to form {[κ3-Tptm]Cd(μ-OSiMe3)}2 and [Tptm]CdOSiPh3, respectively. The siloxide compound {[κ3-Tptm]Cd(μ-OSiMe3)}2 reacts with Me3SiX (X = Cl, Br, O2CMe) to give [Tptm]CdX, while the reaction with PhSiH3 in

Comparative neurotoxic effects and mechanism of cadmium chloride and cadmium sulfate in neuronal cells.

Cadmium (Cd), a known food pollutant, has been demonstrated in numerous studies to induce neurological damage. The pathogenic mechanisms of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) and cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) are generally attributed to the induction of oxidative stress and apoptosis. Nevertheless, the extent to which these two cadmium compounds exhibit differential concentration-dependent neurotoxic effects, as well as the specific underlying mechanisms involved, remain to be elucidated. In this study, the differential neurotoxic effects and underlying mechanisms were explored in PC12 cells which were treate

Cadmium-tolerant bacteria reduce the uptake of cadmium in rice: potential for microbial bioremediation.

We selected 24 bacterial isolates that could tolerate up to 2500 µM CdCl2 from the soil of rice fields downstream from a zinc-mineralized area contaminated with a high level of cadmium (Cd). In the presence of 500 µM CdCl2, all isolates grew slower and with a prolonged lag-phase compared to in the absence of Cd. Cd-binding capacity was high and ranged from 6.38 to 9.38 log[Cd(atom)]/cell. The stability of Cd complexes in bacteria was affected by 1mM EDTA. In 500 µM CdCl2, all isolates produced 0.7 to 4.8-fold more inorganic sulfide and 0.6 to 2.2-fold more thio-rich compounds containing SH gro

A sonochemical method for the preparation of cadmium sulfide and cadmium selenide nanoparticles in aqueous solutions.

Sonochemistry is a branch of chemistry where sound energy in the form of ultrasound is used to influence the course of reactions. A short-term, local increase in temperature occurs when the solutions and suspensions are irradiated by ultrasound. This happens because the substance absorbs the ultrasound waves. The purpose of this research was the synthesis of CdS and CdSe nanoparticles. We used cadmium sulfate hydrate (CdSO(4).8/3H(2)O), elemental S and Se. Aqueous solutions of NaOH, Na(2)SO(3) and EDTA were used as the solvents. During the syntheses, we used a direct immersion ultrasound probe

Blood and urine cadmium and bioelements profile in nickel-cadmium battery workers in Serbia.

Although cadmium (Cd) is extensively used for nickel-cadmium battery production, few recent reports are available on the effect of this toxic metal on the imbalance of biometals in occupational exposure. The current study was carried out to determine the Cd level and its effect on the content of bioelements: zinc, cooper, magnesium, and iron in blood and urine of workers exposed to Cd during nickel-cadmium battery production. beta(2)-microglobulins (beta(2)-MG), as indicators of kidney damage, were determined in urine. The study group comprised 32 male nickel-cadmium battery workers, and the co

XAFS spectral analysis of the cadmium coordination geometry in cadmium thiolate clusters in metallothionein.

We report the combination of measurement and prediction of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) data, where the term XAFS refers to the overall spectrum that encompasses both the X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) region as well as the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) region, to evaluate the cadmium thiolate cluster structures in the metalloprotein metallothionein. XAFS spectra were simulated using coordinates from molecular models of the protein calculated by molecular mechanics/molecular dynamics (MM3/MD), from NMR analyses, and from analysis of X-ray diffraction

Histochemical staining of cadmium thiolate clusters in livers of rats treated chronically with cadmium.

In livers of rats exposed to varying doses of CdCl2 80-90% of the cadmium content present in the fresh tissue is retained if these livers are fixed with a neutral or acid formalin fixative. Cadmium assays during different stages of the staining procedure for protein bound disulphides show the ability of this staining to demonstrate cadmium thiolate clusters next to disulphides. The methods described may also be useful in gaining more insight in the mechanism involved in fixation and staining procedure of some other metals.

Tissue distribution of cadmium and nephropathy after administration of cadmium in several chemical forms.

Cadmium (Cd) was administered as CdCl2, Cd-Cys, Cd-partial structural peptide of metallothionein (MT) II, Cd-MT I, and Cd-MT II to rats, and the distribution of and nephropathy caused by the corresponding Cd compounds were examined. Each Cd complex showed dissociation of Cd in vivo and in vitro in the plasma. With Cd-Cys approximately 80% dissociation was observed while Cd-MT showed only 15% dissociation. When the dissociation of the Cd complex in the plasma was less, the distribution of Cd to the liver was decreased but distribution was increased to the kidney and urine. Each Cd complex showe

DELLA proteins enhance cadmium tolerance by coordinating redox protection and cadmium partitioning in Arabidopsis.

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity requires plants to coordinate growth restraint with cellular protection, but the upstream regulatory mechanism remains unclear. Here, we identify the gibberellin (GA)-DELLA module as a positive regulator of Cd tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Cd exposure reduced endogenous GA levels, shifted GA metabolic gene expression toward a low-GA state, and increased DELLA protein abundance; exogenous GA₃ attenuated this increase. Genetic and pharmacological analyses showed that elevated DELLA activity improved growth under Cd stress, whereas loss of DELLA function increased sensi

Chitinase 38 confers cadmium tolerance via reduced cadmium uptake and metabolic reprogramming in barley.

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination threatens crop productivity and food safety. Chitinase genes (Chit) are well characterized for their roles in plant defense against biotic stresses, but their functions in Cd stress responses remain elusive. Here, we functionally characterize HvChit38, a novel Cd-induced Class I chitinase gene from a Cd-tolerant barley genotype. Chit38 sequences are highly conserved during green plant evolution, with a likely origin from streptophyte algae. HvChit38 overexpression significantly improves plant growth and yield and substantially reduces Cd concentrations in roots,

Hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel for cadmium removal and enhanced sorghum growth under cadmium stress.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that poses a threat to environmental and human health. The hydrophilic and modifiable properties of hyaluronic acid (HA) render it well-suited for advanced environmental absorbent technologies. However, the potential of HA-based hydrogels in environmental applications remains largely unexplored. In this study, HA modified with dopamine (DA) and tannic acid (TA) was first synthesized. Then a novel renewable multi-network hydrogel (HDT) was developed through a simple one-step free radical polymerization. Herein, DA enhances stability by improving coupli

Exogenous GR24 Alleviates Cadmium Toxicity by Reducing Cadmium Uptake in Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) Seedlings.

Strigolactones (SLs) are classified into plant hormones, playing a key role as a mediator of plant growth in response to several abiotic stresses, including drought and salinity. However, the role of SLs in cadmium (Cd)-induced stress to plants is still unknown. The physiological responses of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) stressed in 10 μmol L-1 Cd to exogenous synthetic SLs analog, GR24 were studied in hydroponics. The Cd stress significantly caused the adverse effects on plant growth and root morphology, inhibited photosynthesis, but boosted lipid peroxidation of Switchgrass seedlings. Afte

Cadmium associated with inhaled cadmium oxide nanoparticles impacts fetal and neonatal development and growth.

One industrially important metal oxide nanoparticle (NP) is cadmium oxide (CdO). A study was performed using timed-pregnant CD-1 mice to determine if Cd associated with inhaled CdO NP could reach the placenta and adversely affect the developing fetus and/or neonate. Pregnant mice were exposed by inhalation either every other day to 100 μg of freshly generated CdO/m(3) (exposure 1) or daily to 230 μg CdO/m(3) (exposure 2). In each exposure, mice were exposed to CdO NP or carrier gas (control) for 2.5 h from 4.5 days post coitus (dpc) through 16.5 dpc. At 17.5 dpc, fetuses and placentas from bot
