[Studies on calcium absorption out of a calcium-vitamin-D-preparation using calcium-47 (author's transl)].

Calcium absorption in man was studied by means of labelling an ampoule of Frubiase Calcium forte with calcium-47. For comparative purpose a solution containing the same amount of calcium salts as the ampoule was labelled as well. Already 10 minutes after oral administration of Ca-47 in 10 ml of Frubiase Calcium forte radioactivity was statistically significant measurable in blood. At the same time there was no significant radioactivity demonstrable out of the calcium salt solution. Between 45 and 120 minutes following oral application of the isotope both groups showed a statistically significa

Regulatory Action of Calcium and Calcium Channels in Pain Pathways.

Calcium ions (Ca2+) and Ca2+ channels are pivotal in the regulation of pain pathways and serve as key regulators of neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release. We review the different types of Ca2+ channels involved in pain processing, including voltage-gated Ca2+ channels (VGCCs), such as L-, N-, P/Q-, and T-type channels. Each subtype is intricately involved in different aspects of pain perception, from acute pain signaling to the development and maintenance of chronic pain states. In addition, the roles of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, particularly TRPV1 and TRPA1, ar

Calcium deprivation increases the palatability of calcium solutions in rats.

Calcium-deprived rats have elevated intakes of CaCl2, other calcium salts, and some non-calcium compounds. We used taste reactivity to examine the effects of calcium deprivation on the palatability of CaCl2 and other solutions. Nine male Sprague-Dawley rats were calcium-deprived by maintenance on a low-calcium diet, and eight replete rats were used as controls. All rats were videotaped during intraoral infusion of the following solutions: 30 and 300 mM CaCl2, 30 mM calcium lactate, 100 and 600 mM NaCl, 30 mM MgCl2, 1 mM quinine.HCl, 2.5 mM sodium saccharin, and deionized water. Calcium regulation and nonprotective properties of calcium in surgical ischemia.

Calcium is one of the most important electrolytes in the body. Calcium regulation involves the intricate interaction between intracellular and extracellular levels with the free form of calcium determining function. The parathyroid gland is the principal regulator of ionized calcium in the serum. The kidney and gastrointestinal tract calcium receptors respond to the incorporation of calcium into the cytosol for muscle contraction, cell-cell communication, coagulation, and hormonal and neurotransmitter release functions. The regulation of calcium and the role of calcium antagonists are discusse

[A study of calcium metabolism in calcium-containing stone formers].

To clarify the pathogenesis of calcium-containing urinary stone, calcium metabolism of the 113 patients with calcium-containing stone was studied by fasting and oral calcium loading test. The stone patients were classified into four groups. Those were normocalciuria (NC, n = 60), absorptive hypercalciuria-1 (AH-1, n = 26), absorptive hypercalciuria-2 (AH-2, n = 16) and renal hypercalciuria (RH, n = 11). In the AH-1 group, hypercalciuria resulted from enhancement of intestinal calcium (Ca) absorption. The increase in serum Ca from absorbed Ca increased renal filtered load of Ca. Urinary excreti

The kinetics of remodeling of a calcium sulfate/calcium phosphate bioceramic.

In the last years considerable research and development activity have been expended to find new ceramic bone substitutes for the treatment of bone defects. However in many cases the drawback of synthethic bone substitutes are the slow graft incorporation and remodelling into the host bone. The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinetics of resorption and new bone formation of new calcium sulfate (CaSO4)/calcium phosphate (CaPO4) bioceramic engineered to enhance its bone forming properties. We prospectively evaluated the results of a series of 15 hips with osteonecrosis of the femoral hea

Is the calcium correct? Measuring serum calcium in dialysis patients.

Abnormalities in calcium concentration are frequent in patients receiving dialysis therapy. Most cases of both hypo- and hypercalcemia are mild and asymptomatic. There is concern, however, that, on the one hand, hypocalcemia can drive hyperparathyroidism and eventually lead to gland hypertrophy and autonomous function. Hypercalcemia, on the other hand, can be associated with increased extraosseous calcium and phosphate deposition leading to vascular calcification with an attendant mortality and morbidity. Calcium exists in three main forms in the blood: the physiologically active free or ioniz

Another dimension to calcium signaling: a look at extracellular calcium.

Cell biologists know the calcium ion best as a vital intracellular second messenger that governs countless cellular functions. However, the recent identification of cell-surface detectors for extracellular Ca(2+) has prompted consideration of whether Ca(2+) also functions as a signaling molecule in the extracellular milieu. The cast of Ca(2+) sensors includes the well-characterized extracellular-Ca(2+)-sensing receptor, a G-protein-coupled receptor originally isolated from the parathyroid gland. In addition, other receptors, channels and membrane proteins, such as gap junction hemichannels, me

Genetics of calcium-sensing--regulation of calcium levels in the body.

The skeleton contains over 200 bones, with the regulation of calcium being vital for maintaining this dynamic tissue. The calcium-sensing receptor (CASR) plays a pivotal role in the regulation of calcium both systemically through the parathyroid and locally in specific tissues. Recent studies have identified several sites of expression and further functions for the CASR gene, which include a role in the epidermis, tooth development and fluid regulation. In addition, genetic studies have identified gain-of-function mutations in the CASR gene, leading to a greater understanding of the pathogenes

[Importance of calcium ions and calcium antagonists in affective psychoses].

Apart from the eminent changes in the neurotransmitter systems of the central nervous system, a disturbance of the calcium ion concentration may be of significance in the pathophysiology of affective psychoses. The present paper deals with the contribution of calcium ions in the generation of affective psychoses and discusses the calcium antagonism as a new strategy in the treatment of the disease. The following topics will be described: 1. Disturbances of calcium metabolism in affective psychoses, 2. a comparison of lithium and carbamazepine effects, 3. clinical studies with organic calcium c

Potential of alfalfa as a source of calcium for calcium deficient horses.

The potential of short-cutting cycle, high temperature-dried alfalfa as a source of calcium for horses was determined by means of a 4 x 4 Latin square digestibility trial using four thoroughbred horses (mean liveweight 531 kg). The four dietary treatments were timothy hay alone, 33 per cent alfalfa and 67 per cent timothy hay, 67 per cent alfalfa and 33 per cent timothy hay, and alfalfa alone. Significantly more calcium and magnesium were absorbed from the alfalfa than from the hay. Phosphorus absorption appeared to be unaffected by treatment. Alfalfa calcium was more available than timothy ha

Fortification of all-purpose wheat-flour tortillas with calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, or calcium citrate is acceptable.

Fortification helps provide adequate nutrients for individuals not meeting daily needs. Foods may be fortified with calcium to assist individuals with lactose intolerance and others preferring not to consume traditional forms of dairy. This study examined the quality of all-purpose wheat-flour tortillas fortified with calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, or calcium citrate. These tortillas were compared to similarly prepared nonfortified flour tortillas (control) and commercial nonfortified flour tortillas. Calcium-fortified tortillas contained 114 mg elemental calcium per standard serving (48

Intracellular calcium changes in mice Leydig cells are dependent on calcium entry through T-type calcium channels.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) regulates testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells by inducing an intracellular increase in cAMP concentration. LH also increases the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), dependent on the presence of Ca2+ in the extracellular medium ([Ca2+]e) for its effect. Despite these evidences, the identity of a pathway for calcium entry has remained elusive and the relationship between cAMP and [Ca2+]i has been questioned. Here we show that mice Leydig cells do have an inward Ca2+ current carried by T-type Ca2+ channels. In 10 mm [Ca2+]e, the currents start to be activate

Ginkgolide B Maintains Calcium Homeostasis in Hypoxic Hippocampal Neurons by Inhibiting Calcium Influx and Intracellular Calcium Release.

Ginkgolide B (GB), a terpene lactone and active ingredient of Ginkgo biloba, shows protective effects in neuronal cells subjected to hypoxia. We investigated whether GB might protect neurons from hypoxic injury through regulation of neuronal Ca2+ homeostasis. Primary hippocampal neurons subjected to chemical hypoxia (0.7 mM CoCl2) in vitro exhibited an increase in cytoplasmic Ca2+ (measured from the fluorescence of fluo-4), but this effect was significantly diminished by pre-treatment with 0.4 mM GB. Electrophysiological recordings from the brain slices of rats exposed to hypoxia in vivo revea

Calcium Deregulation in Neurodegeneration and Neuroinflammation in Parkinson's Disease: Role of Calcium-Storing Organelles and Sodium-Calcium Exchanger.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that lacks effective treatment strategies to halt or delay its progression. The homeostasis of Ca2+ ions is crucial for ensuring optimal cellular functions and survival, especially for neuronal cells. In the context of PD, the systems regulating cellular Ca2+ are compromised, leading to Ca2+-dependent synaptic dysfunction, impaired neuronal plasticity, and ultimately, neuronal loss. Recent research efforts directed toward understanding the pathology of PD have yielded significant insights, particularly highlighting the close

Calcium absorption from calcium carbonate and a new form of calcium (CCM) in healthy male and female adolescents.

Calcium absorption from two Ca salts was investigated in a crossover design using stable isotopic tracers in 12 healthy adolescents (6 males, 6 females). A Ca supplement in the form of Ca carbonate or Ca citric and malic acids (CCM) was ingested with a standardized breakfast and the order of administration was randomized. The oral supplement contained 250 mg elemental Ca, 21.8 mg of which was highly enriched 44Ca tracer. Thirty minutes later subjects received 3.6 mg 42Ca tracer intravenously. The molar concentrations of 42Ca and 44Ca tracers in a urine sample obtained 24 h after tracer adminis

Calcium for resuscitation?

Calcium ions are essential for myocardial excitation-contraction coupling and for increasing contractility of the heart. Because of these physiological effects, use of calcium has been recommended in the treatment of electromechanical dissociation, asystole and ventricular fibrillation. Recently, however, the use of calcium during cardiac arrest has come into dispute, as there are no controlled clinical trials supporting a favourable haemodynamic effect. It has rather been suggested that, in resuscitation, calcium may have detrimental effects. In order to evaluate the role of calcium in cardio
