pH-dependent release property of alginate beads containing calcium carbonate particles.

Alginate bead containing calcium carbonate particle were prepared by dropping the suspension of alginate/calcium carbonate (4/1, w/w) into aqueous solution of CaCl(2) (0.1 M). The pH-dependent release property of the bead was observed for 12 h using blue dextran as a model drug. The release increased up to 4 h in a saturation manner. When no calcium carbonate was contained, the release exhibited no marked variation with pH and the values were 27-39%. On the other hand, in case calcium carbonate was included in the matrix of alginate beads, intensive release(40-50%) was achieved in acidic and n

Calcium carbonate consumption during pregnancy: an unusual cause of neonatal hypocalcemia.

The occurrence of hypocalcemia in a term infant after the first few days of life is known to result from excessive dietary phosphate, hypomagnesemia, neonatal hypoparathyroidism, hypovitaminosis D, and maternal hyperparathyroidism. Less well recognized is the possibility that maternal ingestion of antacids may cause late neonatal hypocalcemia. Our observations suggest that taking large doses of calcium carbonate during pregnancy may be a potential cause of neonatal hypocalcemia.

Effect of calcium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide on human intestinal function.

The effect of calcium carbonate (6 g daily) and of aluminum hydroxide (Amphojel, 7.2 g daily) on human gastrointestinal function was examined because these popular antacids have a documented effect on fecal fat, an undocumented association with constipation, and a putative ability to ameliorate cocarcinogenic effects of bile acids and fatty acids on colonic mucosa. Intake-output studies were conducted over periods of three weeks during which time dietary intake was controlled (20 g fiber daily), and the order of treatment (control, calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide) was randomized. Neither

Leg abnormality associated with dietary excessive calcium carbonate in broiler chicks.

When chicks were fed excessive CaCo3, some of them manifested the toes and legs bent in an abnormal direction and final inability to walk in proportion to the dose of calcium. However, chicks fed CaHPO4 containing the same dose of Ca, instead of CaCO3, showed no abnormality of the legs. The leg abnormality of chicks fed excessive CaCO3 resembled the symptom of chicks fed a vitamin D-deficient diet, but there slight differences in serum Ca level and in the findings of the legs by roentgenography between both chick groups. In the radiograph of chicks fed excessive CaCO3, definite radiolucent are

Symbiotic bacteria may support calcium carbonate precipitation in the Gulf toadfish.

Marine fish play a significant yet understudied role in the oceanic carbon cycle through the production of magnesium-rich calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates known as ichthyocarbonates. These deposits form in the gut of marine teleost fish in response to salinity, serving as part of their osmoregulation strategy. Through this, marine fish may contribute as much as 9.04 Pg of CaCO3 per year in global new carbonate production, being equivalent to or potentially higher than the production by coccolithophores and pelagic foraminifera. Despite their ecological relevance, the biological mechanism

Effect of (in)organic additives on microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

AIM: This study aimed to understand the morphological effects of (in)organic additives on microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP). METHODS AND RESULTS: MICP was monitored in real time in the presence of (in)organic additives: bovine serum albumin (BSA), biofilm surface layer protein A (BslA), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), and poly-l-lysine. This monitoring was carried out using confocal microscopy to observe the formation of CaCO3 from the point of nucleation, in comparison to conditions without additives. Complementary methodologies, namely scanning electron microscopy, ener

Electrokinetic potentials of mineral oxides and calcium carbonate in artificial seawater.

Electroacoustic method was used to measure the zeta potentials of mineral oxides and calcium carbonate in artificial sea water (pH 8), and the following values were obtained: synthetic hematite: 0.87 mV; goethite: 1.01 mV; fumed silica: -3.56 mV; quartz: -1.38 mV; calcium carbonate: 1.91 mV. The absolute values of the zeta potentials obtained in the present study are substantially lower than the zeta potentials in seawater reported by other authors. Our results indicate that the effect of electrostatic repulsion in the interactions between the particles of these materials in seawater is neglig

Calcium carbonate phase transformations during the carbonation reaction of calcium heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate overbased nanodetergents preparation.

The preparation and application of overbased nanodetergents with excess alkaline calcium carbonate is a good example of nanotechnology in practice. The phase transformation of calcium carbonate is of extensive concern since CaCO(3) serves both as an important industrial filling material and as the most abundant biomineral in nature. Industrially valuable overbased nanodetergents have been prepared based on calcium salts of heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate by a one-step process under ambient pressure, the carbonation reaction has been monitored by the instantaneous temperature changes and total bas

Comparison of the absorption of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

INTRODUCTION: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) restricts food intake. Consequently, patients consume less calcium. In addition, food no longer passes through the duodenum, the main site of calcium absorption. Therefore, calcium absorption is significantly impaired. The goal of this study is to compare two common calcium supplements in gastric bypass patients. METHOD: Nineteen patients were enrolled in a randomized, double-blinded, crossover study comparing the absorption of calcium from calcium carbonate and calcium citrate salts. Serum and urine calcium levels were assessed for peak values (C

Suppression of parathyroid hormone and bone resorption by calcium carbonate and calcium citrate in postmenopausal women.

This study was conducted to compare the suppressive effects of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate on bone resorption in early postmenopause. Calcium citrate is thought to be better absorbed. We therefore tested the hypothesis that calcium as citrate is more effective than calcium as carbonate in suppressing parathyroid hormone (PTH) and C-terminal telopeptide. Twenty-five healthy postmenopausal women were recruited in this double blind crossover study. The subjects were randomly allocated to receive either 1,000 mg of elemental calcium as carbonate or 500 mg of calcium as citrate. They were

Nanoscale mineralization of cell-laden methacrylated gelatin hydrogels using calcium carbonate-calcium citrate core-shell microparticles.

Conventional biomaterials developed for bone regeneration fail to fully recapitulate the nanoscale structural organization and complex composition of the native bone microenvironment. Therefore, despite promoting osteogenic differentiation of stem cells, they fall short of providing the structural, biochemical, and mechanical stimuli necessary to drive osteogenesis for bone regeneration and function. To address this, we have recently developed a novel strategy to engineer bone-like tissue using a biomimetic approach to achieve rapid and controlled nanoscale mineralization of a cell-laden matri

Colonic intussusception secondary to a calcium phosphate bezoar in a child receiving calcium carbonate for hyperphosphatemia.

We report a case of a calcium phosphate bezoar resulting in colonic intussusception in a boy with chronic renal failure who received calcium carbonate to control hyperphosphatemia. Because of concerns about aluminum-related disease in patients receiving aluminum hydroxide phosphate binders, calcium carbonate is being used more frequently to manage phosphate retention in renal failure. The development of bezoars may complicate this new form of therapy.

A multicenter study on the effects of lanthanum carbonate (Fosrenol) and calcium carbonate on renal bone disease in dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Lanthanum carbonate (LC) (Fosrenol) is a novel new treatment for hyperphosphatemia. In this phase III, open-label study, we compared the effects of LC and calcium carbonate (CC) on the evolution of renal osteodystrophy (ROD) in dialysis patients. METHODS: Ninety-eight patients were randomized to LC (N = 49) or CC (N = 49). Bone biopsies were taken at baseline and after one year of treatment. Acceptable paired biopsies were available for static and dynamic histomorphometry studies in 33 LC and 30 CC patients. Blood samples were taken at regular intervals for biochemical analysis an

Long-term comparison of a calcium-free phosphate binder and calcium carbonate--phosphorus metabolism and cardiovascular calcification.

BACKGROUND: Calcium carbonate used as a phosphate binder may contribute to cardiovascular calcification. Long-term comparisons of sevelamer, a non-calcium polymeric phosphate binder, and calcium carbonate (CC) are lacking. METHODS: 114 adult hemodialysis patients were randomly assigned to open label sevelamer or CC for 52 weeks. Study efficacy endpoints included changes in serum phosphorus, calcium, calcium-phosphorus product, and lipids. In addition, initial and sequential electron beam computerized tomography scans were performed to assess cardiovascular calcification status and change duri

Pathogenesis of calcium-containing gallstones. Canine ductular bile, but not gallbladder bile, is supersaturated with calcium carbonate.

Calcium precipitation in bile is a requisite event in the initiation and growth of all pigment gallstones. Calcium solubility in bile is thus of great importance. This is the first attempt to define the ion-product of CaCO3 in bile in any species. If the ion-product: [Ca++] X [CO = 3] exceeds solubility product (K'sp), the sample is supersaturated and CaCO3 precipitation is thermodynamically possible. We have recently determined K'sp of calcite to be 3.76 X 10(-8) mol/liter at 37 degrees C and total ionic strength = 0.16 M. Gallbladder (GB) bile was obtained from 15 anesthetized dogs after 12-

Raman-Grounded Deep Learning for Calcium Carbonate Polymorph Sensing during Microfluidic Biomineralization.

Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) in microfluidic systems produces spatially and temporally heterogeneous precipitates whose polymorph composition governs material outcomes but is difficult to monitor non-destructively in situ. We present a Raman-grounded deep learning framework that decouples spectroscopic labeling from optical inference: each Raman spectrum is matched to an individually segmented crystal instance, and a five-channel EfficientNet-B0 classifier trained on these per-instance labels assigns polymorph identity to the remaining crystals from brightfield an

Synergic effect of sodium alginate in the microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation.

Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) has emerged as an innovative and environmentally sustainable technique for construction material stabilization. However, its practical application is hindered by limitations such as non-uniform carbonate precipitation and low reaction efficiency. This study investigates the synergistic role of sodium alginate (SA), a natural polysaccharide, in enhancing MICP precipitation efficiency. Systematic experiments assessed how adding 1 wt% SA affected CaCO₃ precipitation across three cementation media (CM) designs (urea:Ca2+ ratios of 1:1, 1:2

Co-administration of calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate prevents esomeprazole-induced osteoporosis.

Long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use is associated with increased risks of osteoporosis and fractures. To investigate strategies for mitigating PPI-induced bone loss, this study evaluated the preventive effects of calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate on bone alterations in a 12-week esomeprazole-treated Wistar rat model. Esomeprazole monotherapy exhibited compromised trabecular microarchitecture, as evidenced by a decrease in bone volume fraction and trabecular number, alongside an increase in trabecular separation. Conversely, co-administration of esomeprazole with either sodium bicar
