Urothelial injury to the rabbit bladder caused by calcium dissolving agents including two new citrate solutions.

We compared the urothelial injury to the bladder caused by four agents capable of dissolving calcium salts. The solutions were administrated in an antegrade way through left ureterostomies in 54 rabbits for periods of 24, 48 and 72 h. The bladders were then removed and three routine histological sections were made for each. The following six solutions were used: physiological sodium chloride solution (Phys), artificial urine (Art), 0.03 M disodium EDTA buffered to pH 8.5 with triethanolamine (EDTA), 10% Renacidin (R), test solution 2 (S2, using D-gluconic acid-lactone and other compounds that

Limited risk of kidney stone formation during long-term calcium citrate supplementation in nonstone forming subjects.

The physiological and physicochemical effects of long-term calcium citrate supplementation (25 mmol. calcium per day) were assessed in 7 normal premenopausal women. Calcium citrate increased urinary calcium from 3.27 +/- 0.42 mmol. per day (standard deviation) before treatment to 5.16 +/- 0.75 mmol. per day after 1-month of treatment (p < 0.0125). After 3 months of treatment urinary calcium decreased from the 1-month value to 4.54 +/- 0.67 mmol. per day (p < 0.0125) but remained higher than the pretreatment value (p < 0.0125). Urinary calcium-to-citrate ratio predicts kidney stone risk in children under the age of two years.

BACKGROUND: The urinary calcium-to-citrate (Ca/Cit) ratio has emerged as a useful indicator of lithogenic risk in older children; however, no reference data exist for infants and toddlers. This study aimed to evaluate whether the spot Ca/Cit ratio can distinguish stone-forming from non-stone-forming children under 24 months of age and to assess its diagnostic performance compared with conventional urinary markers. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included 181 children aged 1-24 months who underwent metabolic evaluation and ultrasonography at their first presentation to a tertia

Ferrus calcium citrate is absorbed better than iron bisglycinate in patients with Crohn's disease, but not in healthy controls.

Our purpose was to compare the absorption of iron bisglycinate and ferrous calcium citrate in volunteers using an oral iron tolerance test. Twenty volunteers, 10 healthy controls and 10 with stable Crohn's disease, agreed to participate in the study. All were given 50 mg of elemental iron as iron bisglycinate or ferrous calcium citrate. Serum iron levels were monitored for 4 hr. After a week, each received the other regimen. Using the area under the curve as indicator, the oral iron absorption test revealed that absorption of iron post-ingestion of ferrous calcium citrate was better than after

Acute effects of calcium sodium citrate supplementation of a test meal on mineral homeostasis, oxalate, and calcium oxalate crystallization in the urine of healthy humans--preliminary results in patients with idiopathic calcium urolithiasis.

Calcium, in the form of regular food supplementation, can improve bone metabolism, but it can also increase the risk for renal calcium stones, and may aggravate pre-existing calcium urolithiasis. To study the first of these two aspects, ten healthy volunteers were given a conventional test meal (breakfast; calcium content 28 mg) with or without two dosages of calcium (as calcium-sodium citrate, CSC 1, 680 mg; CSC 2 1,360 mg), taken after an overnight 12 h fast. To study the latter aspect, patients with idiopathic recurrent calcium urolithiasis (ICU) received a balanced test meal of fixed compo

The impact of microbial transglutaminase modification on fish gelatin-maltodextrin gels loaded with calcium citrate and vitamin D3.

Protecting vitamin D3 (VD3) bioactivity and calcium ion solubility in the upper gastrointestinal tract remains challenging. In this study, a microbial transglutaminase (MTGase)-crosslinked fish gelatin-maltodextrin (FG-MD) matrix was developed to co-encapsulate calcium citrate and VD3, and its protective effects during simulated upper gastrointestinal exposure were subsequently evaluated. Our results demonstrated that MTGase cross-linking (0.00-0.30%) significantly enhanced FG-MD functionality via ε-(γ-glutamyl)lysine bonds, attaining a maximum cross-linking efficiency of 75.16%.
