Hippuric acid metabolism by Corynebacteriumglucuronolyticum-like bacteria promotes calcium oxalate crystallization.

Nephrolithiasis (kidney stone disease) incidence is rising, and microbes have been implicated in kidney stone formation, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely defined. Here, urinary microbiome analysis reveals enrichment of Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum-like (C. glucuronolyticum-like) bacteria in calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone patients. In vivo and in vitro experiments suggest that C. glucuronolyticum-like bacteria promote CaOx crystal nucleation and aggregation in experimental models. Mechanistically, hippuric acid (HA) is identified as a key urinary anti-crystallization metaboli

Salidroside attenuates calcium oxalate-induced renal injury via suppression of PANoptosis.

Calcium oxalate (CaOx), the primary constituent of most urinary calculi, triggers inflammatory responses and tissue damage upon entry into renal tubules, playing a pivotal role in nephrolithiasis pathogenesis. Salidroside (SAL), a phenolic glycoside isolated from Rhodiola plants, exhibits diverse pharmacological activities. This study integrated network pharmacology with experimental validation to investigate the therapeutic potential and mechanistic basis of SAL against urinary stones. In both in vitro and in vivo models of CaOx crystal-induced kidney injury, SAL treatment markedly reduced re

Ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis in calcium oxalate crystal-induced kidney injury.

Kidney stones represent a highly prevalent urological disorder worldwide, with high incidence and recurrence rates. Calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystal-induced kidney injury serves as the foundational mechanism for the formation and progression of CaOx stones. Regulated cell death (RCD) such as ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis are essential in the pathophysiological process of kidney injury. Ferroptosis, a newly discovered RCD, is characterized by its reliance on iron-mediated lipid peroxidation. Necroptosis, a widely studied programmed necrosis, initiates with a necrotic phenotype that res

Calcium oxalate crystals retinopathy following domino liver transplant: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperoxaluria is a rare cause of hereditary crystalline retinopathy. We report the first case of acquired calcium oxalate crystalsretinopathy following domino liver transplantation (DLT). CLINICAL CASE: A 72-year-old patient was referred for bilateral visual impairment 9 months after DLT. Slit lamp examination was unremarkable. Fundus examination revealed calcium oxalate crystals accumulation within both retina. Owing to multi-organ failure, the patient underwent combined liver-kidney retransplantation. During the following two years, calcium oxalate crystals accumulation within

Calcium oxalate deposition in renal allografts: morphologic spectrum and clinical implications.

Many aspects of calcium oxalate (CaOx) deposition in renal transplant biopsies are not known. Review of all renal transplant biopsies performed in a 7-year period showed that CaOx deposition could be classified into three groups. Group I: Seven biopsies within a month post-transplant displayed rare CaOx foci against a background of acute tubular necrosis or acute cell-mediated rejection. At follow-up, five grafts functioned well and two failed due to chronic allograft nephropathy. CaOx in this context was an incidental finding secondary to a sudden excretion of an end-stage renal disease-induc

Calcium oxalate crystal deposition in necrotizing otomycosis caused by Aspergillus niger.

Numerous calcium oxalate crystals were present within fruiting heads of Aspergillus niger and among necrotic debris in a case of bilateral invasive otomycosis occurring in a diabetic female with end stage renal disease. This is the first report of in vivo calcium oxalate crystal deposition associated with Aspergillus niger at this anatomic site. The presence of localized oxalate crystals within necrotic tissue from the external auditory canal is presumptive of otomycosis caused by Aspergillus niger, and may serve as a diagnostic clue to the etiologic agent before histologic demonstration of hy

Calcium oxalate crystal growth in normal urine: role of contraceptive hormones.

Oral contraceptives inhibited the growth of calcium oxalate crystals in female urine, and the growth rate inhibition depended on the dose of ethinyl-oestradiol in the oral contraceptive agent. The results suggest that the crystallization kinetics of calcium oxalate in urine could be under the control of oestrogenic hormones by an unidentified mechanism.

Clinicopathologic update of calcium oxalate in breast: A 15-year retrospective review.

Mammary malignancies are radiologically detected by presence of masses, architectural distortions or microcalcifications. Unlike calcium hydroxyapatite, calcium oxalate (CaOx) deposits have been almost exclusively associated with benign mammary processes. The etiology and mechanism of mammary CaOx deposition remains poorly understood, and the original studies elucidating its histopathologic correlation are dated several decades ago. We reviewed radiopathologic findings of breast biopsies and excisions to re-examine the clinicopathologic significance of CaOx deposits and to ascertain potential

Urine metabolomic changes in cats with renal disease or calcium oxalate uroliths.

Two common problems in the urinary system of cats are renal disease (RD) and calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones. The objective of this study was to assess urine metabolomic parameters of cats with these diseases to determine metabolic abnormalities and differences between the groups. The urine metabolic profile for each cat was determined, along with their lifetime history of stone incidence and renal disease. In order to reduce the data for analysis, factor analysis/factor loading was used allowing statistical hypothesis testing and the selection of significant metabolites from 488 identified meta

[Papillary and cavitary monohydrate calcium oxalate lithiasis: comparative study of etiological factors].

OBJECTIVES: The monohydrate calcium oxalate lithiasis (MCO) is divided in two groups depending on the morphologic-crystal structure: papillary (anchorage point on a renal papilla lesion) and cavity (formed in a cavity with low urodynamic capacity). The minimal differences between urinary biochemistry of MCO makers in comparison with healthy population suggests that other factors different than urine biochemistry (professional activity, dietetic habits, systemic diseases) may be related with lithogenesis. The objective of this work is to study such factors, and compare them in both groups of MC

Mechanisms of calcium oxalate crystal attachment to injured renal collecting duct cells.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell or tissue injury results in a loss of membrane lipid asymmetry and/or loss of cell polarity, and both events lead to changes on the surface of the cell membranes that enhance crystal attachment. We have proposed two distinct mechanisms of crystal attachment following membrane changes induced by various modes of injury. METHODS: Annexin V was used to determine whether phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure on the cell membrane surface plays a role in calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystal attachment to cells that have lost their polarity as well as to cells that have lost t

Calcium oxalate is associated with benign breast tissue. Can we avoid biopsy?

Breast biopsies are commonly performed for abnormal, usually clustered, calcifications detected by mammography. Calcium phosphate is the predominant form of calcium seen in breast tissue and is frequently associated with malignancy. Calcium oxalate, which can also be present in breast tissue, has been exclusively associated with benign lesions. Thus, if mammography could distinguish calcium phosphate from calcium oxalate, biopsy could be avoided in some patients. Pathologic findings and corresponding mammograms of 55 patients who underwent biopsy for abnormal calcifications were reviewed. The
