A calcium phosphate solid formed as an unintended consequence of a novel high-pH orthophosphate lead corrosion control strategy in Providence, RI, resulting in some consumer complaints and clogged plumbing. Investigations were carried out at pH levels of 8.9-10.4, at temperatures of 5-60°C, and with orthophosphate concentrations ranging from 0 to 4.0 μg/L as orthophosphate (PO4) to examine this phenomenon. During field testing, the calcium phosphate initially precipitated at orthophosphate doses above about 2 mg/L as PO4, and the extent of precipitation increased with water age and higher temp

Phosphate (Pi) and calcium (Ca2+) are essential mineral ions that play coordinated roles in maintaining normal cellular functions. While various steps of calcium signaling are well characterized, emerging evidence suggests the critical role of both intracellular and extra cellular phosphate in regulating intracellular Ca2+. In the cytoplasm, phosphate influences ATP production and organelle calcium buffering and influences the activity of calcium pumps, such as sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) and the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA). Extracellular phosphate, taken up v

Maintaining normal calcium and phosphate homeostasis is essential for optimal cellular, metabolic, and organ function. Parathyroid hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis via multiple interlinked feedback loops, receptors, ion channels, and transporters. Following an initial overview of the stimuli and effects of the different hormonal regulators, this installment of AJKD's Core Curriculum in Nephrology reviews the physiology and pathophysiology of calcium and phosphate disorders through the lens of a series of illustrative c

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a protein produced by mature osteoblasts involved in mineral homeostasis by binding to its receptor complex FGFR/Klotho located mainly in the kidneys. Although this protein participates in numerous biological processes, increase in the levels of FGF23 is responsible for many pathologies, such as X-linked hypophosphataemia (XLH), chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease or even mortality. For this reason, both FGF23 and its receptors have become elements of interest for the development of treatments. However, FGF23 can be altered for many other reaso

Calcium phosphate was unknown as a plant biomineral until recently reported in Neotropical Loasaceae. Here, we demonstrate its widespread occurrence in the trichomes of several plant families, including Brassicaceae. Calcium phosphate is the primary biomineral in, e.g., the bones and teeth of higher animals; in plants, it was only recently discovered in the stinging hairs and scabrid-glochidiate trichomes of South American Loasaceae (Ensikat et al. in Sci Rep UK 6:26073, 2016), where it appears to be deposited highly specifically, often replacing the common plant biomineral silica. We initiate

Ribose is an important constituent of RNA: ribose connects RNA bases and forms a strand of sugar phosphates. Accumulation of ribose on prebiotic Earth was difficult because of its low stability. Improvement in the yield of ribose by the introduction of borate or silicate in a formose-like reaction has been proposed. The effects of borates have been further analyzed and confirmed in subsequent studies. Nonetheless, the effects of silicates and phosphates remain unclear. In the present study, we incubated aldopentoses in a highly alkaline aqueous solution at a moderate temperature to determine t

Kidney stones composed predominantly (50% or more) of calcium phosphate constitute up to 10% of all stones and 15%-20% of calcium stones, 80% of which are composed of calcium oxalate. Calcium phosphate is a minor component of up to 30% of calcium oxalate stones as well. The cause of calcium phosphate stones is often obscure but most often related to a high urine pH. Some patients with calcium phosphate stones may have incomplete renal tubular acidosis. Others have distal renal tubular acidosis characterized by hyperchloremic acidosis, hypocitraturia, and high urine pH. The use of carbonic anhy

INTRODUCTION: Bone substitutes are rarely used in the reconstruction of cleft lip and palate. The graft material of choice is cancellous bone, harvested in the hip or tibia. Tibial harvesting may lead to postoperative morbidity, or even complications. This has lead surgeons to develop alternative solution. We present a secondary alveolar bone grafting technique using synthetic calcium phosphate ceramics.
OBSERVATION: A patient presenting with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate was treated by alveolar bone grafting at the age of nine years, using a mixture of autologous bone, harvested

Hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia are frequently observed in recipients of a kidney transplant (KTx). Hypercalcemia has been reported in up to 66% of KTx patients. Many factors have been suggested as the putative causal factors; however, the persistence of moderate-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism, associated with a change in the set-point of the Ca-controlled parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, is considered to play a prominent role. Hypercalcemia can negatively impact on both the graft and patient outcome, increasing the incidence of nephrocalcinosis, which can induce a worse graft out

Disturbances of mineral metabolism are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. Unfortunately, some of the treatments for these disturbances also have been found to be associated with morbidity. More recently, there is increasing evidence in the form of prospective, randomized trials that the use of calcium-based phosphate binders contributes to progressive coronary artery and aorta calcification compared with the non-calcium-containing binder sevelamer. Moreover, there is compelling biologic plausibility that hyperphosphatemia and excess exo

Calcium and phosphate levels were investigated in 39 children with malaria (six severe and 33 uncomplicated) and in 39 healthy children. Hypocalcaemia (calcium <2.13 mmol/L, adjusted for albumin level) was detected in 23.1% of malaria cases and in 5.1% of controls, and hypophosphataemia (<1 mmol/L) in 38.5% of cases and in 15.4% of controls. Mean (SD) calcium levels in cases [2.26 (0/15)] were similar to those in controls [2.24 (0.12)]. In Nigerian children, hypocalcaemia and hypophosphataemia are associated with malaria.

The aims of this study were to determine reference ranges for the urinary calcium (UCa/Cr) and phosphate (UPO(4)/Cr) creatinine ratios and to study factors influencing these ratios in a representative population of preterm infants managed according to current nutritional guidelines. Spot urine samples were obtained from 186 preterm infants (gestation 24-34 weeks) for measurement of UCa/Cr and UPO(4)/Cr ratios as part of a routine metabolic bone screening program, once every 2-4 weeks from the 3rd to the 18th week of life. Data were also collected on gender, appropriate or small for gestational

Two calcium phosphate cements, one monophasic and the other biphasic, have been used as bone void filler in a sheep model. The cements were injected into a slot defect in the proximal tibia and into a cylindrical defect in the distal femur. In this study, we focused on the resorption pattern of the two cement formulations and the subsequent biologic reaction. Bone remodeling occurred synchronously with the resorption of the implant material in a creeping substitution process. Cracks and pores in the monophasic cement were filled with osseous tissues. The biphasic cement showed faster resorptio

We have used published rat micropuncture data to construct a matrix of ion concentrations along the rat nephron. With an iterative computer model of known ion interactions, we calculated relative supersaturation ratios in all nephron segments. The collecting ducts and urine showed expected supersaturation with stone-forming salts. Fluid in the thin segment of the loop of Henle may be supersaturated with calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate under certain conditions. Because calculations cannot predict the actual course of crystallization, we made solutions to mimic, in vitro, presumed condit

Basic calcium phosphate (BCP) crystals refer to a family of crystals including partially carbonate substituted hydroxyapatite, octacalcium phosphate, and tricalcium phosphate. These crystals have been found in and around joints and have been associated with several forms of arthritis and periarthritis. Identification of BCP crystals remains problematic because of the lack of a simple, reliable analytic procedure. Methods currently in use include alizarin red S staining, labelled diphosphonate binding, scanning and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, X-r

Physiological and clinical aspects are discussed in this review on calcium-phosphate metabolism in pre-term infants. Calcium accumulation in the bone mass of the foetus is related to the gestational age, and mainly occurs during the last weeks of gestation. Therefore, after birth, hypocalcemia is more frequent in pre-term than term infants. However, clinical symptoms of hypocalcemia, e.g. attacks of apnea, hyperexcitability and hypotonia, are rarely observed. Such symptoms depend upon the serum concentration of ionized calcium and this concentration is influenced by various metabolic factors.

A new clinicopathologic syndrome, possibly familial, in Great Dane dogs, resembles the familial childhood variant of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposit disease in man, except that the mineral deposits were composed of amorphous calcium phosphate or hydroxyapatite rather than pyrophosphate. The syndrome was characterized clinically by paraplegia and incoordination in very young puppies which was caused by concentric constriction of the posterior cervical spinal cord. Canal stenosis resulted from dorsal displacement of the seventh cervical vertebra and deformation of the vertebral articular

The purpose of the present investigation was to study various aspects of phosphate metabolism in renal calcium stone patients with special reference to the renal handling of phosphate and its relationship to other renal tubular functions and calcium metabolism. Serum phosphate and the capacity for renal tubular reabsorption of phosphate were lower in stone patients than in controls and decreased with advancing age. Reduced tubular phosphate reabsorption was particularly evident in stone patients with other tubular dysfunctions. Absorptive hypercalciuria was common, but unrelated to the renal t
