Placental transfer of hexachlorophene (HCP) in the marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus).

Autoradiography was used to study the distribution of 2,2'-14C-methylene-bis-(3,4,6-trichlorophenol) (HCP) in pregnant marmoset monkeys in early (day 30-50) and late (around day 120) gestation and in a newborn (11 days old) pup. Radioactivity was present in the conceptus at all stages of gestation, although the foetal concentration was lower than the maternal. In the embryo an accumulation was observed in the neural tube and in the embryonic membranes. In the late foetus and newborn monkey the highest concentration of radioactivity was found in the liver and the intestinal contents. The brain

Benchmarks defining high-quality sperm in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

BACKGROUND: Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are increasingly recognized as valuable nonhuman primates (NHPs) for biomedical research due to their small size and short reproductive cycle and lifespan relative to other NHP species. Maximizing the utility of captive research marmosets, including genetically manipulated animals, will require the use of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) including manipulation, storage, and sharing of marmoset sperm. Here, we identify characteristics of high-quality semen samples and validate a simple method for selecting high-quality sperm. METHODS: Com

Dilated cardiomyopathy phenotype in Callithrix penicillata (E. Geoffroy, 1812): Case report.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart muscle diagnosed by alterations resulting from ventricular systolic dysfunction with enlargement of the heart chambers, which is still underdiagnosed in non-human primates. This report is the first case of the DCM phenotype diagnosed by echocardiography and confirmed by necropsy in Callithrix penicillata.

Lung Lobe Torsion in an Adult Male Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

A 6-y-old, intact, pair-housed male common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) presented with acute onset dyspnea and tachypnea immediately after sedation with alfaxalone; a history of gradual weight loss initiated the examination under sedation. Thoracic radiographs revealed significant right-lung consolidation, with a vesicular gas pattern in the right caudodorsal lung field, pleural effusion, and dorsal displacement of the heart. The marmoset was euthanized due to his unstable condition and poor prognosis. At necropsy, the cranial and middle lobes of the right lung were homogenously dark red-brow

Experimental Respiratory Infection of Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) With Ebola Virus Kikwit.

Ebola virus (EBOV) causes a highly infectious and lethal hemorrhagic fever in primates with high fatality rates during outbreaks and EBOV may be exploited as a potential biothreat pathogen. There is therefore a need to develop and license appropriate medical countermeasures against this virus. To determine whether the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) would be an appropriate model to assess vaccines or therapies against EBOV disease (EVD), initial susceptibility, lethality and pathogenesis studies were performed. Low doses of EBOV-Kikwit, between 4 and 27 times the 50% tissue culture infect

Dissociation between seeing and acting: insights from common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Perception-based measures often reveal much earlier competencies than action-based approaches. We explored this phenomenon generally labeled as "knowledge dissociation" in 28 common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) using a paradigm where subjects had to localize a food item dropped down an opaque tube. Experiments 1 and 2 assessed common marmoset monkeys' gravity bias in an action based version of the tubes task. Experiments 3 and 4 investigated whether marmosets' performance increases in an action-free task context where they simply look at objects falling down a tube. The results sugges

Traumatic chylothorax in urbanized free-ranging black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata).

After fatal traumatic injuries, three urbanized free-ranging marmosets developed a milky white or pink-white thoracic alkaline effusion with high specific gravity, triglyceride levels, and predominance of small lymphocytes. Chylothorax is an uncommon thoracic fluid accumulation in animals and humans and has not been reported in free-ranging non-human primates.

Linking personality traits and reproductive success in common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

Animal personality can affect individual fitness and population growth. Personality traits of either parent or parents' combination may facilitate reproduction and offspring survival across species. However, previous studies focused mainly on the role of only one sex, and the link between personality and fitness has not been confirmed in primates. We examined this link in both sexes of captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a cooperatively breeding primate with extensive paternal care. We studied the effects of five personality traits of the parents (Agreeableness, Assertiveness, Consc

A Novel Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) Model of Human Inhalational Q Fever.

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) were shown to be susceptible to inhalational infection with Coxiella burnetii, in a dose-dependent manner, producing a disease similar to human Q fever, characterized by a resolving febrile response. Illness was also associated with weight loss, liver enzyme dysfunction, characteristic cellular activation, circulating INF-γ and bacteraemia. Viable C. burnetii was recovered from various tissues during disease and from 75% of the animal's lungs on 28 days post challenge, when there were no overt clinical features of disease but there was histological evidenc

Pulmonary actinomycosis in a free-living black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata).

Actinomycosis is a very rare infection in wild animals with a few reports in captive non-human primates. Herein we report a case of pulmonary actinomycosis in a free-living black-tufted marmoset in the urban area of the Federal District, Brazil. The animal presented severe dyspnea and died in the garden of a residence. At necropsy, the left-pulmonary lobes showed multiple nodules filled with purulent content. A myriad of beaded, branching, filamentous Gram-positive and modified Ziehl-Neelsen-negative bacilli arranged in aggregates or star-like colonies, surrounded by macrophages, neutrophils,

Spontaneous lesions detected in the common cotton-eared marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Spontaneous lesions in the common cotton-eared marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), which were maintained in our laboratory or were purchased from a commercial breeder, were examined histopathologically. There were 39 males and 22 females, between the ages of 7 and 100 months. The most interesting finding noted was extramedullary hematopoiesis, which was observed in the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, liver, kidney, adrenal gland, and cerebral choroid plexus. Megakaryocytes were frequently observed in the blood vessels of the alveolar wall of the lung. It is important to distinguish extramedullary

No Evidence of Rabies Exposure in Wild Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) of Northeast Brazil.

Rabies transmitted by wildlife is the main source of human rabies mortality in Latin America and considered an emerging disease. The common marmoset Callithrix jacchus of Brazil is the only known primate reservoir of rabies worldwide. We tested whether alive free-ranging C. jacchus were exposed to rabies in four northeast states that have previously reported rabies-positive dead C. jacchus (Pernambuco and Bahia) or not (Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte). Our results show no evidence of rabies antibodies or infection in the sampled C. jacchus, suggesting that apparently healthy marmosets are not

The use of midazolam as an appetite stimulant and anxiolytic in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

BACKGROUND: Food avoidance secondary to disease or stress can lead to weight loss and rapid deterioration of clinical condition in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Currently, there are no data supporting the use of any pharmaceuticals as an appetite stimulant in this species; however, benzodiazepines are frequently used for this purpose in other species. METHODS: Six marmosets were used in a crossover study design to evaluate the benzodiazepine midazolam as an appetite stimulant and anxiolytic. Total food intake (TFI) and latency to eat (LTE) were measured following administration of

Comparative experimental subcutaneous glanders and melioidosis in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

Glanders and melioidosis are caused by two distinct Burkholderia species and have generally been considered to have similar disease progression. While both of these pathogens are HHS/CDC Tier 1 agents, natural infection with both these pathogens is primarily through skin inoculation. The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) was used to compare disease following experimental subcutaneous challenge. Acute, lethal disease was observed in marmosets following challenge with between 26 and 1.2 × 10(8) cfu Burkholderia pseudomallei within 22-85 h. The reproducibility and progression of the disease we

Development of an acute model of inhalational melioidosis in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

Studies of inhalational melioidosis were undertaken in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Following exposure to an inhaled challenge with aerosolized Burkholderia pseudomallei, lethal infection was observed in marmosets challenged with doses below 10 cfu; a precise LD(50) determination was not possible. The model was further characterized using a target challenge dose of approximately 10(2) cfu. A separate pathogenesis time-course experiment was also conducted. All animals succumbed, between 27 and 78 h postchallenge. The challenge dose received and the time to the humane endpoint (1 °C

Fatal Herpes simplex infection in a group of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

An outbreak of classical herpetic infection causing vesicoulcerative stomatitis in a family group (eight animals) of Callithrix jacchus is described. In all eight infected animals, human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1) was identified as the causative agent. This was confirmed by histologic, immunohistologic, and molecular biologic investigations, as well as by virus isolation. The clinical picture, the macroscopic appearance, and the histologic results indicated a herpes infection as the cause of mortality. Alterations of the oral mucous membranes were erosive to ulcerative with typical intranuclear inc

The distribution of presumptive thoracic paraganglionic tissue in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

The aortic-pulmonary regions (APR) of seven adult marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and the region of the right subclavian artery of a further three marmosets were diffusion-fixed with 10% buffered formol-saline solution. In both regions serial 5 microm sections were cut and stained by the Martius yellow, brilliant crystal scarlet and soluble blue method. Presumptive thoracic paraganglionic (PTP) tissue was only observed in the APR. PTP tissue was composed of small groups of cells that varied in size and number. The distribution of the groups of cells was extremely variable, so much so that it wo

Tularemia in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) diagnosed by 16S rRNA sequencing.

We report a case of tularemia in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) diagnosed by determination of the isolate's 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence. Pathological examination of the animal revealed a multifocal acute necrotizing hepatitis, interstitial nephritis, splenitis, and lymphangitis of the mandibular, retropharyngeal, and cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes. Moreover, multiple foci of acute necrosis were found in the epithelium of the jejunum and the interstitium of the lung. Bacteriological investigations revealed a septicemia. The isolated infectious agent was uncommon, not rou
