[Developing indices for caloric restriction related to World War II--a pilot study].

BACKGROUND: The vast numbers of studies regarding caloric restriction (CR) and breast cancer risk are based on war-related extreme situations. Studying the impact of CR in Jews during World War II (WW II) is challenging due to its variance and duration. OBJECTIVE: To develop novel research tools in order to assess CR exposure in Jews that occurred more than 60 years ago during WW II. METHODS: A pilot study based on Israeli women born in Europe in 1926-45, who lived there during WWII. Primary incident breast cancer patients and population-based controls were interviewed using a detailed quest

Diagnosis of Gilbert's syndrome. Reliability of the caloric restriction and phenobarbital stimulation tests.

The diagnostic role of the reduced caloric intake test and phenobarbitone treatment in Gilbert's syndrome was evaluated. During fasting the increase in unconjugated serum bilirubin concentration was significantly higher in patients with Gilbert's syndrome than in normal subjects but not when compared with the increase observed in patients with acute hepatitis, which is the clinically most relevant differential diagnosis. Phenobarbital treatment significantly reduced the level of unconjugated serum bilirubin in patients with acute hepatitis or Gilbert's syndrome, but without any difference with

Caloric restriction protects from acute and chronic kidney injury by inhibiting monocyte recruitment.

Diet influences disease progression, yet the effects of fasting on acute kidney injury (AKI) and its transition to chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain unclear. This study evaluated fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) cycles versus ad libitum feeding in murine models of AKI and CKD induced by aristolochic acid or folic acid. FMD significantly reduced serum creatinine, kidney injury, and maladaptive repair marker expression, and promoted faster recovery. It also lowered renal cytokines and pro-fibrotic genes, reduced CCL2 levels, and decreased monocyte recruitment while favoring protective monocyte phe

Caloric restriction as a possible pitfall for persistent acromegaly follow-up - case report.

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly diagnosis is established when plasma levels of IGF-1 are increased and the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) with 75gr of glucose can't suppress Growth Hormone (GH) levels. These two parameters are also useful during follow-up, after surgical/radiologic therapy and/or during medical therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old woman was diagnosed with acromegaly after a severe headache. Previous amenorrhea and facial and acral changes were noticed. A pituitary macroadenoma was found, biochemical evaluation was in agreement with the suspected acromegaly and a transsphenoid

Maackiain Mimics Caloric Restriction through aak-2-Mediated Lipid Reduction in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Obesity prevalence is becoming a serious global health and economic issue and is a major risk factor for concomitant diseases that worsen the quality and duration of life. Therefore, the urgency of the development of novel therapies is of a particular importance. A previous study of ours revealed that the natural pterocarpan, maackiain (MACK), significantly inhibits adipogenic differentiation in human adipocytes through a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ)-dependent mechanism. Considering the observed anti-adipogenic potential of MACK, we aimed to further elucidate the mo

Caloric Restriction and Remission of Severe Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: An Autobiographical Case Report.

In this autobiographical case report, the physician-author-patient is documenting the remission of his own severe chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) in response to caloric restriction and subsequent weight loss. To my knowledge, this is the first reported case of CSU remission secondary to weight loss in the literature. CSU is a common debilitating pruritic skin condition that carries a significant economic and psychological burden. Currently, the mainstay of CSU treatment is symptom control, rather than seeking to achieve complete remission. Despite some recent retrospective studies reportin

Metformin Plus Caloric Restriction Show Anti-epileptic Effects Mediated by mTOR Pathway Inhibition.

Caloric restriction (CR) has anti-epileptic effects in different animal models, at least partially due to inhibition of the mechanistic or mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibits mTOR cascade function if energy levels are low. Since hyper-activation of mTOR participates in epilepsy, its inhibition results in beneficial anti-convulsive effects. A way to attain this is to activate AMPK with metformin. The effects of metformin, alone or combined with CR, on the electrical kindling epilepsy model and the mTOR cascade

Early postnatal caloric restriction protects adult male intrauterine growth-restricted offspring from obesity.

Postnatal ad libitum caloric intake superimposed on intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with adult-onset obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We hypothesized that this paradigm of prenatal nutrient deprivation-induced programming can be reversed with the introduction of early postnatal calorie restriction. Ten-month-old male rats exposed to either prenatal nutrient restriction with ad libitum postnatal intake (IUGR), pre- and postnatal nutrient restriction (IPGR), or postnatal nutrient restriction limited to the suckling phase (50% from postnatal [

Short-term caloric restriction augments age-related decreases in gastrin content and release.

Aging is associated with significant structural and functional changes in the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrin, a hormone produced by G cells in the antrum of the stomach, stimulates proliferation of gastric mucosa; its synthesis appears to decrease with age. Life-long restriction of caloric intake is the only experimental manipulation that has been shown to retard aging processes in rats. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of short-term caloric restriction (CR) on the production and release of the hormone gastrin with aging. Aging causes a fall in both fasting plasma levels of

Effect of time-restricted feeding and caloric restriction in metabolic associated fatty liver disease in male rats.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is high. However, there are few studies on the effects of time-restricted feeding (TRF) and caloric restriction (CR) in MAFLD. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the efficacy and mechanism of 4 h TRF and 60% CR in MAFLD. METHODS: Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the Normal group (normal diet, 10 kcal% fat), while the remaining 38 rats were assigned to the MAFLD group (high-fat diet, 60 kcal% fat). 10 weeks later, the MAFLD group was randomly divided into the 4 h TRF, 60% CR, 4 h TRF + 60% CR, and

A systems biology analysis of the unique and overlapping transcriptional responses to caloric restriction and dietary methionine restriction in rats.

Dietary methionine restriction (MR) and calorie restriction (CR) each improve metabolic health and extend life span. We used comprehensive transcriptome profiling and systems biology analysis to interrogate the unique and overlapping molecular responses in rats provided these dietary regimens for 20 mo after weaning. Microarray analysis was conducted on inguinal white adipose (IWAT), brown adipose tissue (BAT), liver, and skeletal muscle. Compared to controls, CR-induced transcriptomic responses (absolute fold change ≥1.5 and P≤0.05) were comparable in IWAT, BAT, and liver (~800 genes). MR-ind

The impact of fasting and caloric restriction on rheumatoid arthritis in humans: A narrative review.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1 % of the global population. It is characterized by swollen and painful joints eventually evolving into bone erosion, cartilage degradation and systemic inflammation, that significantly reduce patients' quality of life. While modern pharmacological treatments often lead to symptom improvement, they are also accompanied by substantial side effects, which can further impair patient wellbeing. Dietary interventions, particularly fasting and caloric restriction (CR), have gained increasing attention as adju

Protein expression in the brain of rat offspring in relation to prenatal caloric restriction.

OBJECTIVE: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) has been associated with decreased supply of crucial substrates to the fetus and affects its growth and development by temporarily or permanently modifying gene expression and function. However, not all neonates born by calorie restricted mothers are IUGR and there are no reports regarding their brain protein expression vis-à-vis that of their IUGR siblings. Here, we investigated the expression of key proteins that regulate growth and development of the brain in non-IUGR newborn pups versus IUGR siblings and control pups. METHODS: Rat brain pr

Metal ion content of internal organs in the calorically restricted Wistar rat.

BACKGROUND: Despite the agreed principle that access to food is a human right, undernourishment and metal ion deficiencies are public health problems worldwide, exacerbated in impoverished or war-affected areas. It is known that maternal malnutrition causes growth retardation and affects behavioral and cognitive development of the newborn. Here we ask whether severe caloric restriction leads per se to disrupted metal accumulation in different organs of the Wistar rat. METHODS: Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy was used to determine the concentration of multiple elements

Caloric Restriction Preserves BBB Integrity After Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia Through Reducing Neutrophil Infiltration.

AIMS: Caloric restriction is a health-promoting lifestyle that has been reported to protect both white and gray matter in cases of ischemic stroke. This study will explore the underlying mechanism of restricted feeding (RF) and provide a theoretical basis for precise clinical treatment of stroke. METHODS: In this study, we pretreated C57BL/6J mice with 70% RF for a continuous 28-day period prior to 60 min of transient focal cerebral ischemia (tFCI). Histological staining, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and behavioral assessments were used to assess RF's neuroprotection following tFCI. Immuno

Caloric restriction impacts skin barrier function and attenuates the development of hyperplasia skin disease.

Caloric restriction (CR) stands out as one of the most potent interventions that prolong lifespan and mitigate age-associated diseases. Despite its well-established systemic effects, the impact of CR on skin physiological function remains poorly understood, and whether the intervention can alleviate the progression of inflammatory skin diseases remains uncertain. Here, we investigated the effects of CR on mouse skin barrier function and inflammatory response. Our results revealed that CR led to dramatic atrophy in the skin subcutaneous layer. The expression of barrier proteins and trans-epider

Synergistic interaction between caloric restriction and amphetamine in food-unrelated approach behavior of rats.

RATIONALE: Approach behavior is regulated by the brain integrating information about environment and body state. Psychoactive drugs interact with this process. OBJECTIVES: We examined the extent to which caloric (i.e., food) restriction, amphetamine (AMPH) and lithium interact in potentiating locomotor activity and responding reinforced by visual stimulus (VS), a reward unrelated to energy homeostasis. METHODS: Rats either had ad libitum access to food or received daily rations that maintained 85-90 % of their original body weights. Leverpressing turned on a cue light for 1 s and turned off
