Disability from Japanese encephalitis in Cambodia and Viet Nam.

A cohort of Japanese encephalitis (JE) survivors in Cambodia and Viet Nam were assessed at least 4 months after hospital discharge in order to understand the extent of disability after JE. We used a simple assessment tool which focuses on the impact on daily life. In total, 64 disability assessments were conducted: 38 in Cambodia and 26 in Viet Nam. In Cambodia, 4 (11%) children had severe sequelae, suggesting the children would likely be dependent, 15 (39%) had moderate sequelae and 17 (45%) had mild sequelae. In Viet Nam, two (8%) persons had severe sequelae, five (19%) had moderate sequelae

[Hospital-based active surveillance of human leptospirosis in Cambodia].

Leptospirosis has been so far poorly described in Cambodia and is probably underdiagnosed in the current local medical practices, although conditions to its active circulation exist in this country. Between June 2006 and July 2007, 612 patients admitted to Takeo hospital and Calmette hospital in Phnom Penh presenting clinical symptoms compatible with leptospirosis, were recruited for biological investigation of leptospirosis markers: PCR detection of bacterial DNA and serology using an Elisa-IgM test and the micro-agglutination reference test (MAT). One hundred eighty-three patients (29.9%) we

The Hidden Burden of Parkinson's Disease in Cambodia: A Call to Action.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is an emerging global public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet it remains under-recognized in Cambodia. The absence of reliable epidemiological data, limited specialist workforce, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate access to essential medicines contribute to a substantial but largely hidden disease burden. Health system limitations, such as inadequate primary care capacity, rehabilitation services, and insufficient community-based support, further exacerbated disparities in PD care. This article highlights critical gaps in PD

High prevalence of large trematode eggs in schoolchildren in Cambodia.

Large trematode eggs (LTE) resembling Fasciola spp. eggs were reportedly found in the stools of schoolchildren in Kandal province, Cambodia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of LTE in the stools of children attending the affected school, identify potential risk factors for infection and ascertain the trematode species. We performed a cross-sectional study involving an in-depth questionnaire administered to schoolchildren at the affected school, and examined cattle droppings in the surrounding area and the livers of slaughtered cattle. Three stool samples were examined per child, using

Japanese encephalitis in a Danish short-term traveler to Cambodia.

We present a recent case of Japanese encephalitis in a Danish male traveler to Cambodia, who we believe is the second Danish case within the last 15 years. Although both this and a number of other travel-related cases occurred in short-term travelers, change in vaccination recommendations is not recommended.

Prevention of lymphatic filariasis with insecticide-treated bednets in Cambodia.

Potential risk factors for lymphatic filariasis (LF), including the failure to use insecticide-treated bednets (ITN), were studied in four north-eastern provinces of Cambodia, using 43 cases of LF and 248 apparently healthy controls who were matched with the cases in terms of age (+/-5 years), gender and village. The results of a univariate matched analysis indicated that lack of ITN [odds ratio (OR)=20.1; 95% confidence interval (CI)=2.2-182.4; P=0.008] and frequent overnight stays in forests or paddy fields outside the village (OR=3.6; CI=1.3-10.0; P=0.012) were the most important risk facto

The role of sex worker clients in transmission of HIV in Cambodia.

The study investigated whether clients of sex workers are a bridge for transmission of HIV to the general population of Cambodia. We interviewed and collected blood from 468 clients attending 30 randomly selected brothels in three provinces of Cambodia. The levels of HIV knowledge and condom use, and prevalence of HIV (9.2%) were high. Almost 40% of those interviewed had sex with women other than sex workers (wives, girlfriends, etc.), but rarely used condoms. Sexually transmitted disease (STD) rates were high, but most sought treatment from pharmacies. HIV infection was correlated with a hist

The international trade in toxic waste: the case of Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

In December 1998, 2,700 metric tons of industrial waste containing high levels of mercury and other metals and possibly other toxic compounds were shipped illegally from Taiwan to Sihanoukville, Cambodia. There the waste was unloaded and transferred to a nearby inland dumpsite. An estimated 2,000 Sihanoukville residents were exposed to the waste occupationally or environmentally, and at least six deaths and hundreds of injuries have been associated with the incident. The authors describe the human exposures and associated morbidity and mortality, recount the medical and public health response,

Bacterial Genomics for National Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) often relies on poorly resourced laboratory processes. Centralized sequencing was combined with cloud-based, open-source bioinformatics solutions for national AMR surveillance in Cambodia. METHODS: Blood cultures growing gram-negative bacteria were collected at 6 Cambodian hospitals (January 2021 to October 2022). Isolates were obtained from pure plate growth and shotgun DNA sequencing performed in country. Using public nucleotide and protein databases, reads were aligned for pathogen identific

Anopheles ecology, genetics and malaria transmission in northern Cambodia.

In the Greater Mekong Subregion, malaria cases have significantly decreased but little is known about the vectors or mechanisms responsible for residual malaria transmission. We analysed a total of 3920 Anopheles mosquitoes collected during the rainy and dry seasons from four ecological settings in Cambodia (villages, forested areas near villages, rubber tree plantations and forest sites). Using odor-baited traps, 81% of the total samples across all sites were collected in cow baited traps, although 67% of the samples attracted by human baited traps were collected in forest sites. Overall, 20%

Illnesses Encountered During Medical Volunteering in Takeo Province, Cambodia.

Background and Objectives: Medical volunteering seeks to meet the clinical needs of underserved areas, but has been criticized for difficulties in addressing local health issues and resultant lack of sustainability. Our team has visited rural Cambodia annually since 2012. This study reports the illnesses encountered during the recent mission and share our experiences to improve the efficiency of medical volunteering. Materials and Methods: Infrastructure, such as public electricity or water, was unavailable, hence most medical care and records were hand-performed. We categorized (1) primary di

Calming the mind: Healing after mass atrocity in Cambodia.

After catastrophic events in which people's survival has been threatened, as happened during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia 1975-1979, some continue to suffer from painful mental symptoms. Surveys carried out in Cambodia based on Western diagnostic categories have found a high prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety symptoms in the population. This study explored Cambodian approaches to healing trauma, examining the ways in which Cambodians appeal to elements of Buddhism in their efforts to calm their minds, situating this mode of coping in the context o

Nasopharyngeal bacterial colonisation in HIV-positive children in Cambodia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of nasopharyngeal colonisation in HIV-positive children. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal, nasal and ear swabs were prospectively taken from all children living in two paediatric nursing homes for HIV-positive orphans in Cambodia from 2004 to 2011. RESULTS: A total of 882 swabs were taken, of which 586 tested positive for bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated species (178 isolates; 30.4%) followed by Streptococcus pneumoniae (103 isolates; 17.6%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (99 isolates; 16.9%). The rate of S. pneumoniae decreased in 2009 when

Surveillance for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Battambang, Cambodia.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and humanitarian missions are increasing worldwide. The prevalence of MRSA in the populations served may be unknown. A BRAVA (Blast Resuscitlation and Victim Assistance) mission was conducted at Battambang, Cambodia that included microbiology support. No MRSA was detected in our patients despite the reported increase in MRSA in Asia. Continued investigation is warranted for future missions.

Asymptomatic malaria reservoirs are the last challenge in the elimination in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, is a serious public health issue globally and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many developing countries worldwide. Cambodia is in the last stages of malaria elimination and aims to eliminate all species of human malaria by 2025. Despite tremendous progress, eliminating malaria in Cambodia has proven to be challenging due to pockets of residual transmission in high-risk populations sustained by untreated asymptomatic malaria reservoirs. Understanding the extent of asymptomatic malaria reservoirs in 'last-mile' communities such as thos

The Role of Micronutrients and Toxic Metals in the Management of Epidemics in Cambodia.

The illegal trade of wildlife in SE Asia has been identified as the likely cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. We reviewed 198 papers on the current COVID pandemic in Cambodia, diseases such as avian influenza and Nipah virus, most likely to develop into a new pandemic in Cambodia, and common features of disease that require mitigation. Artisanal goldmining uses pure mercury in the areas where wildlife is smuggled to China. Moreover, 30-40% of Cambodians are zinc deficient. High levels of arsenic in irrigation water (>1000 µg/L) are associated with very low levels of zinc in rice (5 µg/g) and rice
