Trypanosoma cruzi-associated megaesophagus was diagnosed in a domestic Louisiana-born llama with no significant travel history. The llama resided in the same rural area of greater New Orleans, Louisiana, where the first human autochthonous case of Chagas disease was identified in the state. Venous blood from the llama tested positive for T. cruzi kinetoplastid DNA by conventional PCR. The cardiac evaluation was unremarkable, while thoracic radiographs revealed generalized megaesophagus. The llama received supportive care, but was ultimately humanely euthanized. The esophagus was severely diste

South American Camelids, including alpacas, have gained popularity in Europe as pets and prized wool sources. Skin health concerns, particularly mite infestations, have emerged as a notable problem in these animals. Sarcoptic mange can lead to severe itching, papules, and chronic symptoms such as alopecia, crusts, and emaciation if left untreated. This case report documents a 2-year-old female alpaca suffering from sarcoptic mange. Despite initial treatment with ivermectin, its condition worsened, leading to severe weight loss, abortion, and a continued presence of mites. Considering the lack

An 11-y-old hembra alpaca was admitted because of cerebellar and vestibular signs, dysphagia, and aspiration pneumonia; without clinical improvement following empirical therapy, the patient was euthanized. On autopsy, a neoplasm was found incorporating the right vestibulocochlear nerve at the level of the acoustic meatus. Histologically, the mass was composed of a multiphasic primitive cell population associated with a dense fibrous stroma and enveloping a remnant ganglion and nerve bundles. Patterns included dense ribbons and cords of embryonal neuroepithelial cells admixed with loosely defin

The number of New World camelids in European farms is rising and thus, the need for veterinary care towards these animals arises. However, veterinary care requires sophisticated knowledge on disease and pathogen occurrence within New World camelids. Here, an alpaca cria with neurological signs was admitted to the veterinary clinic. Although the animal was treated with antibiotics, vitamins and dexamethason, it refused to drink milk and the clinical status worsened. After euthanasia, necropsy and histopathological examination were carried out and revealed intracerebral nematode larvae. The morp

A 5-year-old llama was presented for unilateral cryptorchidism. Clinical findings included an abdominally retained right testicle. Surgical treatment consisted of laparoscopic removal of the abdominally retained testicle and routine closed castration of the descended testicle, which is presented as a therapeutic option for cryptorchidectomy. Key clinical message: Laparoscopic exploration and castration should be considered as a suitable surgical treatment for a llama with abdominally retained testicles.

South American camelids, particularly alpacas, are gaining in popularity outside their native lands. Reproductive biotechnologies, such as artificial insemination or embryo transfer with cryopreserved embryos, are more complicated in these species than many others due to differences in their reproductive physiology compared to the more commonly encountered domestic livestock. This article reviews the methods currently available for obtaining semen or spermatozoa from alpacas and describes some of the problems associated with handling the viscous seminal plasma characteristic of camelids. Pituitary gland neoplasia has been reported rarely in camelids. A 12-year-old neutered male llama (Lama glama) presented with lethargy, inappetence and neurological signs. On physical examination, the llama was mentally dull and exhibited compulsive pacing and circling to the left. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry revealed haemoconcentration, mild hypophosphataemia, hyperglycaemia, hypercreatininaemia and hyperalbuminaemia. Humane destruction was elected due to rapid clinical deterioration and poor prognosis. Post-mortem examination revealed a pituitary macroadenoma and bilateral in

CASE HISTORY: In mid-summer (February), 42 of a flock of 68 ram hoggets (approximately 5 months of age) and two of a group of 14 alpacas on a farm in the Manawatū region of New Zealand were found recumbent or dead following a period of persistent rain, strong winds and relatively low temperatures. The hoggets and alpacas had been shorn 4 and 53 days previously, respectively, and were in adequate to good body condition with access to ad libitum pasture. Post-mortem and histological examinations were undertaken on four hoggets and two alpacas.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Apart from hypothermic body temp

Protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria represent important enteric pathogens of South American camelids (SACs), particularly affecting juvenile alpacas and llamas. Despite their veterinary and economic significance, current knowledge regarding camelid coccidiosis remains limited, especially in relation to species taxonomy, endogenous development, molecular diagnostics, and species-specific treatment strategies. This review summarizes current knowledge on Eimeria species infecting SACs, including their morphology, life cycle, epidemiology, pathogenicity, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Endoparasitism is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in alpacas (Lama pacos), with growing emergence of anthelmintic resistance. The purpose of the study was to correlate nematode worm burden and selected host phenotypic characteristics, such as age and weight, with the composition of the intestinal microbiota of adult alpacas. Fecal samples were collected per rectum from 102 healthy adult (2.1-11.2 years) alpacas at 3 separate timepoints (pre- and post-treatment with 8.8 mg/kg oral Levamisole HCL, and 4.6 months later) at a single farm. The profile of the fecal bacterial microbiota was

BACKGROUND: Left displacement of the third gastric compartment (LDC3) in alpacas is an extremely rare condition and has not been reported thus far. Therefore, we describe the clinical diagnosis and treatment of LDC3 in an alpaca.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old brown female alpaca (Vicugna pacos) was presented to evaluate a 3-day history of abdominal distension causing loss of both appetite and thirst, along with oliguria and low to no defecation. Clinical examination, X-ray examination, surgical exploration, and determination of gastric pH (pH ~ 2.35) confirmed that LDC3 resulted in abdomina

Bluetongue virus (BTV) was sporadically isolated over a four year period (2010-2014) from several alpaca carcasses that were presented for necropsy at the Western Cape Provincial Veterinary Laboratory, South Africa. Typically, the a ected animals had a history of acute dyspnoea and progressive weakness before death. Consistent hydrothorax and severe lung oedema in all lead to a preliminary diagnosis of Bluetongue, despite the absence of ulceration and hyperaemia of the oral mucosa which is characteristic of this viral infection in sheep. The diagnosis was con rmed by virus isolation in embryon

Infection by the larval form of Oestrus ovis (sheep bot fly) is common in many areas of Peru. This is an obligate parasite of sheep and goats, and it is the cause of oestrosis, or nasal myiasis, which can lead to severe clinical manifestations in livestock. A case of myiasis caused by O. ovis in a llama (Lama glama) in Cuzco, Peru, is reported here. This llama presented with respiratory distress and died due to bilateral hemorrhagic pneumonia. During the necropsy, six intact dipterous larvae were recovered from the nasal fossae and cranial sinuses being identified as O. ovis. This is the first

An overview of the present status of the use of artificial insemination (AI) in South American camelids and wild equids is offered. Technical aspects of semen collection, dilution and cryopreservation have limited the development and use of AI in camelid and equid species. To-date, efficiency is low but progress has been made and viable offspring have been produced through the use of AI in domestic South American camelids using both fresh and frozen semen. The origin, composition, and function of the viscous component of camelid seminal plasma remain a mystery and an obvious area for future re
