Systematic Identification and Functional Characterisation of Colletotrichum fructicola Effectors During Camellia oleifera Colonisation.

Camellia oleifera is an important woody oil crop in southern China, but its production is severely threatened by anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum fructicola. C. fructicola deploys secreted effector proteins to establish infection. However, systematic identification and functional characterisation of C. fructicola effector genes upregulated during infection remains largely unexplored. Here, we integrated genome-wide secretome prediction with RNA-seq data from C. oleifera leaves inoculated with C. fructicola to identify candidate effectors induced during infection, followed by functional scr

Oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins from Camellia petelotii leaves and their hyaluronidase inhibitory activity.

Seven previously unreported oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins (1-7), along with three known compounds (8-10), were isolated from the leaves of Camellia petelotii. Their structures, including the relative configurations of the aglycone moieties, were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including extensive NMR and mass spectrometry. The absolute configurations of the sugar units attached to the saponins were determined by acid hydrolysis. All isolated compounds were screened for hyaluronidase inhibitory activity. As a result, compounds 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 exhibited hy

Genome characterization of a novel betaflexivirus from the wild tea plant Camellia taliensis.

The wild tea species Camellia taliensis is an important genetic resource and a close relative of cultivated tea plants. In this study, metatranscriptomic sequencing of asymptomatic leaves of C. taliensis led to the identification of a previously undescribed virus. This virus, which is tentatively named as Camellia taliensis betaflexivirus 1 (CtBV1), possesses a monopartite positive-sense RNA genome of 6,564 nucleotides (nt). The genome contains two overlapping open reading frames (ORFs), flanked by a 37-nt 5′ untranslated region (UTR) and a 128-nt 3′ UTR. The larger ORF encodes a polyprotein c

Quantitative Succinyl-Proteome Profiling of Camellia sinensis cv. 'Anji Baicha' During Periodic Albinism.

Lysine succinylation is a novel dynamic and evolutionarily conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that regulates various biological processes. 'Anji Baicha' is an albino tea variety that exhibits temperature-based variability of leaf colour and amino acid concentrations. However, the mechanism underlying albinism in 'Anji Baicha' has not been investigated at the level of succinylation. Here, we identify 3530 lysine succinylation sites mapped to 2132 proteins in 'Anji Baicha', representing the first extensive data on the lysine succinylome in the tea plant. Eleven conserved succinylati

First Report of Anthracnose on Camellia oleifera Caused by Colletotrichum fioriniae in Hunan, China.

Camellia oleifera, known as the tea-oil tree, is a multifunctional woody oil crop renowned as the "Oriental olive". During 2023-2024, in Jishou City (28°17'N, 109°29'E), Hunan Province, China, 100% of tea-oil tree plants and over 40% of the leaves on each plant exhibited typical anthracnose symptoms. Initially, infected areas displayed yellowish regions. As the disease progressed, brown necrotic lesions with dark brown margin and tiny, dark dots emerged. Diseased leaves were collected, rinsed under running water, and cut into small pieces (5×5 mm) from the edges of the lesions. These pieces we

Disruption of Photomorphogenesis Leads to Abnormal Chloroplast Development and Leaf Variegation in Camellia sinensis.

Camellia sinensis cv. 'Yanlingyinbiancha' is a leaf-variegated mutant with stable genetic traits. The current study aimed to reveal the differences between its albino and green tissues, and the molecular mechanism underlying the variegation. Anatomic analysis showed the chloroplasts of albino tissues to have no intact lamellar structure. Photosynthetic pigment in albino tissues was significantly lower than that in green tissues, whereas all catechin components were more abundant in the former. Transcriptome analysis revealed most differentially expressed genes involved in the biosynthesis of p

Lorcaserin and Renal Outcomes in Obese and Overweight Patients in the CAMELLIA-TIMI 61 Trial.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is thought to increase renal hyperfiltration, thereby increasing albuminuria and the progression of renal disease. The effect of pharmacologically mediated weight loss on renal outcomes is not well-described. Lorcaserin, a selective serotonin 2C receptor agonist that promotes appetite suppression, led to sustained weight loss without any increased risk for major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events in the CAMELLIA-TIMI 61 trial (Cardiovascular and Metabolic Effects of Lorcaserin in Overweight and Obese Patients-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction 61). New insights into the regulatory effects of galloylated catechin on male reproduction in Camellia oleifera.

Flavonoids, particularly galloylated catechins, are known to regulate pollen tube growth, but their mode of action in woody plants remains poorly characterized. Here, we investigated the effects of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-a major galloylated catechin-on Camellia oleifera pollen tubes using combined cytological and transcriptomic approaches. In vitro treatment with 100 μg mL-1 EGCG significantly reduced pollen germination and tube elongation. Confocal and fluorescence microscopy revealed that EGCG rapidly disrupted the apical Ca2+ gradient within 10 min, accompanied by disorganized acti
