A woman in her 60s with a left hip prosthesis was presented with left hip pain and fever. She had an elevated white blood cell count and inflammatory markers. Synovial fluid Gram stain demonstrated curved Gram-negative rods identified as Campylobacter jejuni The patient initially refused surgery and after 3 months underwent one-stage exchange after which she was treated with 12 weeks of levofloxacin. Her inflammatory markers normalised and she was clinically doing well at her 6-month follow-up. C. jejuni is a rare cause of prosthetic joint infection and should be included in the differential d

Campylobacter infection is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, yet life-threatening complications are extremely rare. We present a 32-year-old previously healthy man who presented with dysentery from Campylobacter jejuni, which was complicated by cecal perforation and secondary bacterial peritonitis.

Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni)-host-interaction may be affected by the maturation stage of the chicken's immune system and the developing gut microbiota composition. We compared these parameters between birds C. jejuni-inoculated at day one, 10, 22 and 31 post hatch. The highest C. jejuni-colonization rate and numbers of colony forming units (CFU) were detected in caecal content of day-one-inoculated birds while the lowest was detected in 22-days-old birds. The low bacterial colonization of 22-days-old chickens correlated with the most prominent immune reactions in this age group in comparis

The incidence of infection with Campylobacter pylori (CP) in gastric ulcer (GU) and duodenal ulcer (DU) and its correlation with the gastritis lesions associated to the two diseases, was investigated. In GU the incidence of CP infection was 76.3%, close to that in DU (71.4), but different from controls (33.3%). Chronic gastritis associated to gastric or duodenal ulcer is of variable severity, CP infection being the more often encountered the higher the severity of gastritis. Presence of CP was also observed in 75% of the cases associated also with intestinal metaplasia from UG. The diameter of

The existence of a distinctive form of chronic gastritis characterized by marked infiltration of the surface and pitlining epithelium by mature T lymphocytes has been confirmed. Seventeen cases were identified amongst 382 patients with active chronic gastritis (4.5 per cent). The cases with lymphocytic gastritis had significantly higher counts of intraepithelial lymphocytes than sex and age-matched controls drawn from a series of patients with the usual form of active Type B chronic gastritis. Furthermore, the lymphocytic gastritis group exhibited unusual endoscopic findings, namely erosions a

A prospective study of 53 patients was undertaken to determine the presence of Campylobacter pyloridis infection in patients undergoing endoscopy at Auckland Hospital. Twenty-four patients (47%) were infected with C pyloridis. Twenty-three of the 28 patients with active chronic gastritis and one of the seven patients with chronic gastritis were infected. None of the 17 patients with normal antral histology were infected. Infection was significantly correlated with active chronic gastritis (p less than 0.001). Infection was not associated with any particular symptom complex or endoscopic findin

The incidence of campylobacter enteritis in Lancaster City Health Authority is three times the UK average for similar sizes of population and has marked seasonal peaks in May and June. Environmental monitoring of surface waters around Lancaster showed that thermophilic campylobacters were absent from drinking water from the fells and from the clean upper reaches of the River Conder but were present in the main rivers entering Morecambe Bay, the lower reaches of the River Conder, the Lancaster canal, and seawater from the Lune estuary and Morecambe Bay. All the surface waters tested showed the

Human clinical strains of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus colonized the gastrointestinal tracts of both athymic (nu/nu) and euthymic (+/nu) germfree mice (BALB/c). Viable Campylobacter spp. (10(9) to 10(10) CFU/g [dry weight] of cecum and colon contents) were isolated on day 3 after oral challenge, and similar large numbers of viable cells were evident at several intervals during a 10-month experiment. The stomachs and upper small intestines of nu/nu and +/nu mice that were monoassociated for 224 days with C. jejuni 45100 contained 3 to 4 logs fewer viable bacteria th

Genus Campylobacter has been recognized as a causative bacterial agent of animal and human diseases. Human Campylobacter infections have caused more concern. Campylobacters can be classified into two groups in terms of their original host: zoonotic and human oral species. The major zoonotic species are Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, which mostly reside in the intestines of avian species and are transmitted to humans via consumption of contaminated poultry products, thus causing human gastroenteritis and other diseases as sequelae. The other campylobacters, human oral species, inc

BACKGROUND: Bacteremia with species in the genus Campylobacter is rare, and knowledge of the disease course in comparison with Campylobacter enteritis is limited.
METHODS: This is a retrospective population-based study. Episodes of Campylobacter bacteremia and Campylobacter enteritis with a concurrent negative blood culture result that occurred between 2015 and 2022 in southern Sweden were identified through the laboratory database. Medical records were reviewed, and clinical features between patients with bacteremic Campylobacter infections were compared with patients with Campylobacter spp

Campylobacter enteritis is the most common cause of foodborne bacterial diarrhea in humans. Although various studies have been performed to clarify the pathomechanism in Campylobacter infection, the mechanism itself and bacterial virulence factors are yet not completely understood. The purpose of this chapter is to (i) give an overview on Campylobacter-induced diarrheal mechanisms, (ii) illustrate underlying barrier defects, (iii) explain the role of the mucosal immune response and (iv) weigh preventive and therapeutic approaches. Our present knowledge of pathogenetic and diarrheal mechanisms

Twenty-two biopsy specimens of colon mucosa were obtained from 16 patients with gastrointestinal campylobacteriosis histologically, histochemically and morphometrically. At the height of the disease colon mucosa of these patients showed a morphological picture of acute hemorrhagic and erosive--hemorrhagic colitis. When compared with such for other intestinal infections (shigellosis, salmonellosis, rotaviral gastroenteritis), the morphological features appeared to vary permitting a differential diagnosis with acute colitis due to above infections, but objective criteria to differentiate campylo

Clinical and laboratory findings of 78 paediatric patients with infections due to enteroinvasive bacteria were analysed. The material included 33 cases of Yersinia enterocolitica, 21 of Campylobacter jejuni, 21 of Salmonella and 2 of Shigella infection, reflecting the current order of frequency ot these enteropathogens in Finnish paediatric population. Diarrhoea was the presenting symptom in 73% of the cases with Yersinia, 90% with Campylobacter and 100% with Salmonella. Conversely, abdominal pain on admission occurred more frequently (p less than 0.01) in patients with Yersinia (68%) than wit

Campylobacteriosis is considered the most common foodborne bacterial zoonosis worldwide. The species most frequently associated with enteric cases in humans is Campylobacter jejuni, followed by C. coli, and they can be transmitted through poultry meat. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of fecal shedding and the ability of these pathogens to colonize internal organs in laying hens using an experimental infection model. Two independent trials were conducted using sixteen-week-old laying hens, orally infected with 1 × 10 ³ CFU or 1 × 10 ¹ ⁰ CFU of C. jejuni or C. coli. Cloacal swabs were

Campylobacter spp. is a gram-negative bacillus that causes infectious enteritis and consists of several species, including Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter fetus. Although C. jejuni and C. coli cause infectious enteritis primarily in immunocompetent hosts, C. fetus causes extraintestinal infections such as septicemia, meningitis, and perinatal infections in immunocompromised hosts, as well as myopericarditis in rare cases. Only a few cases of infectious myo(peri)carditis associated with C. coli in immunocompetent hosts have been reported. These studies concentrated o

Campylobacteriosis is a disease of worldwide importance, but aspects of its transmission dynamics, particularly risk factors, are still poorly understood. We used data from a matched case-control study of 4,269 men who have sex with men (MSM) and 26,215 controls, combined with national surveillance data on Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Shigella spp., to calculate matched odds ratios (mORs) for infection among MSM and controls. MSM had higher odds of Campylobacter (mOR 14, 95% CI 10-21) and Shigella (mOR 74, 95% CI 27-203) infections, but not Salmonella (mOR 0.2, 95% CI 0-13), and we

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli together represent the leading bacterial cause of human enteritis. However, the pathogenesis of this disease is poorly understood. Infection results in the formation of crypt abscesses resulting from the migration of neutrophils across the intestinal epithelium and into the intestinal crypts. In this study, we model this process in vitro and show that Campylobacter infection of epithelium results in a quantifiable increase in the directed movement of neutrophils from the basolateral to apical surface of the epithelium. This process is dependent on bo
