Campylobacteriosis is the most reported foodborne gastroenteritic disease and poses a serious health burden in industrialized countries. Disease in humans is mainly caused by the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. Due to its wide-spread occurrence in the environment, the epidemiology of Campylobacter remains poorly understood. It is generally accepted, however, that chickens are a natural host for Campylobacter jejuni, and for Campylobacter spp. in general, and that colonized broiler chicks are the primary vector for transmitting this pathogen to humans. Several potential sources and vect…

The lipid A component of Campylobacter jejuni lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) contains the same architectural principle as that found in other bacterial species; however, unlike the case with other bacterial species, the lipid A backbone of C. jejuni strains is composed of a phosphorylated beta(1'-6)-linked disaccharide containing 2,3-diamino-2,3-dideoxy-D-glucose and D-glucosamine as the major molecular species. Despite a backbone that differs structurally from that of classic enterobacterial lipid A, C. jejuni lipid A is antigenically similar to enterobacterial lipid A, and the respective LPSs ha…

A 37-year-old woman developed multiple liver abscesses caused by Campylobacter jejuni, as a consequence of unrecognized and inadequately treated Campylobacter enteritis. The diagnosis was established by isolation of Campylobacter jejuni from blood and pus obtained from one of the liver abscesses during laparoscopy. The abscesses were successfully treated with intravenously and orally administrated antibiotic drugs, without further percutaneous drainage.

The virulence of Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli isolated from various water sources was compared with that of clinical strains by in vitro assays of adhesion, invasion and cytotoxicity to HeLa cells. Variation in degree of attachment was observed, but this did not appear to be related to strain source, However, water strains were less invasive and less cytotoxic to HeLa cells than clinical strains as shown by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. These differences were particularly evident between clinical and water isolates of the same serotype and biotype implicated in an outbreak of…

Three patients who developed carditis after enteritis caused by Campylobacter jejuni are reported. Two had perimyocarditis and one endocarditis. The cardiac sequelae persisted in two patients. Concomitant arthritis appeared in two of these patients, monoarthritis in one and polyarthritis in the other.

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examin … onkaiensis. This report presents a rare case of coinfection with Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis and Campylobacter jejuni. Therefore, it is important to consider the coexistence of other intestinal infections when diagnosing parasitic infections in patients with fever.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni is a major bacterial cause of food-borne enteritis, and its lipooligosaccharide (LOS) plays an initiating role in the development of the autoimmune neuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, by induction of anti-neural cross-reactive antibodies through ganglioside molecular mimicry.
RESULTS: Herein we describe the existence and heterogeneity of multiple LOS forms in C. jejuni strains of human and chicken origin grown at 37 °C and 42 °C, respectively, as determined on sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide electrophoresis gels with carbohydrate-specific silver staini…

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni has been recently recognized as a common human enteric pathogen; however, the pathology and pathophysiology of the enteritis caused by this agent are still largely obscure. We report 4 patients who presented with acute abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea and who had C. fetus ss. jejuni isolated from fecal cultures. Each patient showed a fourfold rise in serum IgG titer to the organism isolated. In all 4 patients colonic involvement was noted on sigmoidoscopic examination. Biopsy specimens showed acute colitis with inflammatory infiltrates of the lamina propria and

The population and range of feral pigs in the United States are rapidly expanding, yet key knowledge gaps exist regarding their role in the ecology and transmission of foodborne pathogens. Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli shedding among feral pigs throughout Texas and to identify risk factors for positive status. Faecal samples were collected from feral pigs in Texas from February 2014 through May 2015, and target organisms were detected using PCR assays. The prevalence of C. jejuni shedding was 1.6% (6/370), and the prevalence of C.…

We report here the genome sequences of four agricultural, multidrug-resistant Campylobacter spp.: C. coli 11601 and C. jejuni 11601MD, isolated from turkey cecum and jejunum, respectively, and C. coli 6067 and C. coli 6461, isolated from turkey-house water and swine feces, respectively. The genomes provide insights on Campylobacter antimicrobial resistance and host adaptations.

Campylobacter jejuni is a leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, and resistance to major antibiotic classes is increasing. Exploiting collateral sensitivity (CS) may be an effective approach to optimize antibiotic use and mitigate the impact of resistance. In this study, we investigated CS and collateral resistance (CR) profiles in experimentally evolved C. jejuni mutants derived from ATCC 29428 resistant to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of thirteen antibiotics were determined in the wild-type and mutant strains to c…

Campylobacter infection is the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, yet life-threatening complications are extremely rare. We present a 32-year-old previously healthy man who presented with dysentery from Campylobacter jejuni, which was complicated by cecal perforation and secondary bacterial peritonitis.

Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni)-host-interaction may be affected by the maturation stage of the chicken's immune system and the developing gut microbiota composition. We compared these parameters between birds C. jejuni-inoculated at day one, 10, 22 and 31 post hatch. The highest C. jejuni-colonization rate and numbers of colony forming units (CFU) were detected in caecal content of day-one-inoculated birds while the lowest was detected in 22-days-old birds. The low bacterial colonization of 22-days-old chickens correlated with the most prominent immune reactions in this age group in comparis…

Campylobacter jejuni is one of the leading causes of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and is associated with a number of sequelae, including Guillain-Barre Syndrome, reactive arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and growth stunting/malnutrition. Vaccine development against C. jejuni is complicated by its antigenic diversity, a lack of small animal models, and a poor understanding of the bacterium's pathogenesis. Vaccine approaches have been limited to recombinant proteins, none of which have advanced beyond Phase I testing. Genomic analyses have revealed the presence of a polysaccharide capsule on …

Several explanations have been proposed to explain the relationship between axonal forms of acute auto-immune inflammatory polyradiculoneuritis and Campylobacter jejuni. The major hypothesis involving molecular imitation is based on the existence of common antigenic determinants (epitopes) in the lipopolysaccharides of the infectious agent and gangliosides, i.e. glycosphingolipides on the surface of the nervous system cells, especially peripheral nervous system cells. The purpose of this literature review is to improve understanding of the rather complex physiopathological mechanisms underlyin…

We report the case of a previously healthy 53-year-old white male who developed an extraordinary complication of acute Campylobacter jejuni colitis. Toxic megacolon occurred while the patient was treated with a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and glucocorticoids, which were given for endoscopically suspected Crohn's colitis. During the course of the disease no cause of colitis was found other than C. jejuni. Despite the extreme dilatation, the patient was treated conservatively with parenteral nutrition and repeated decompression colonoscopies and made a full, though slow, and uneventful recovery. …
