[Pancreatic necrosis infection by Candida parapsilosis associated with fungemia].

Pancreatic necrosis infection is the most common complication affecting mortality of severe acute pancreatitis (death rate 80%). Bacterial infections particularly with coliforms or anaerobes account for the majority of cases of infected necrosis. Fungal pancreatic infections with Candida species are rare and often nosocomial. We report herein the first case of pancreatic necrosis infection with Candida parapsilosis associated with fungemia confirmed by molecular typing.

Contribution of N-Linked Mannosylation Pathway to Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis Biofilm Formation.

BACKGROUND: Mycoses are a growing threat to human health, and systemic candidiasis caused by Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis is frequent in immunocompromised patients. Biofilm formation is a virulence factor found in these organisms, as sessile cells adhere to surfaces, the stratification and production of extracellular matrix provides protection and resistance to antifungal drugs. Previous evidence indicated that the N-linked mannosylation pathway is relevant to C. albicans biofilms, but its contribution to other species remains unknown. METHODS: C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis

The Emerging Uncommon Non-Albicans Candida: Candida Parapsilosis Peritonitis in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient.

Candida parapsilosis can cause invasive fungal infection which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Timely management of this uncommon Candida pathogen is essential to prevent peritoneal dialysis patients from succumbing to the infectious complications of peritonitis related to it. We present a 75-year-old Caucasian female with end-stage renal disease, on peritoneal dialysis at home, who presented with peritonitis features found to be related to this rare Candida species. She was treated with four weeks course of oral fluconazole and was switched to incenter hemodialysis. Ph

Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto and the closely related species Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis in vulvovaginal candidiasis.

This study aimed to determine the clinical characteristics and in vitro susceptibilities of Candida parapsilosis sensu stricto, Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis isolates from patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). We analysed 63 vaginal C. parapsilosis specimens. After the molecular analyses, the isolates were characterised as C. parapsilosis sensu stricto (77.8%), C. orthopsilosis (7.9%) and C. metapsilosis (14.3%). The signs and symptoms of VVC caused by C. parapsilosis sensu lato, including itching, erythema and abnormal discharge, were milder than those caused by C. al

[Investigation of the Effect of Farnesol on Biofilm Formation by Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis Complex Isolates].

The incidence of infections caused by Candida species has significantly increased over the past three decades. Candida albicans is commonly recognized as the primary causative agent in cases of candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida species, including Candida parapsilosis, are also frequently defined as pathogens. Treatment-resistant infections arise as a result of biofilm formation, which is one of the effective mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Candida infections. However, the mechanisms of action of farnesol, a quorum sensing (QS) system molecule, on biofilm formation by Candida species

Deciphering of Candida parapsilosis induced immune response in Drosophila melanogaster.

Candida infections are the most prevalent cause of serious human mycoses and are the third most common pathogens isolated from bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients. C. parapsilosis is a member of the non-albicans spp., which have a predilection for causing life-threatening disease in neonates and hospitalized pediatric patients. In this study, we utilized a Drosophila melanogaster infection model to analyze the immunological responses to C. parapsilosis. Our results demonstrate that the Toll pathway in Drosophila controls C. parapsilosis proliferation as the Toll signaling mutant My

Candida parapsilosis Colony Morphotype Forecasts Biofilm Formation of Clinical Isolates.

Candida parapsilosis is a frequent cause of fungal bloodstream infections, especially in critically ill neonates or immunocompromised patients. Due to the formation of biofilms, the use of indwelling catheters and other medical devices increases the risk of infection and complicates treatment, as cells embedded in biofilms display reduced drug susceptibility. Therefore, biofilm formation may be a significant clinical parameter, guiding downstream therapeutic choices. Here, we phenotypically characterized 120 selected isolates out of a prospective collection of 215 clinical C. parapsilosis isol

Periorbital Necrotizing Fasciitis Secondary to Candida parapsilosis and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Necrotizing fasciitis is most often caused by either polymicrobial bacterial infections or by Gram-positive organisms, such as Streptococcus or Staphylococcus; however, rare cases of fungal necrotizing fasciitis have been reported. Candida parapsilosis is an emerging fungal pathogen. This fungus grows in either a yeast or pseudohyphal form. C. parapsilosis has been reported to cause keratitis, intraocular infection, and seeding of frontalis slings. C. parapsilosis is a commensal of human skin and can be acquired by nosocomial spread. Necrotizing fasciitis due to Candida has rarely been reporte

Emphysematous pyelonephritis caused by Candida parapsilosis: an unknown etiological agent.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) a rare complication commonly seen in diabetic patients is a necrotising gas producing infection of the renal parenchyma and perinephric tissue predominantly caused by uropathogenic bacteria. Fungi have been rarely reported as the etiological agents, isolated from blood and/ or urine culture. We report a case of EPN caused by a rare etiological agent. A 60 year old diabetic female with no previous history of hospitalization presented to us with a short history of febrile illness associated with abdominal pain. Investigations revealed unilateral EPN "Wan type 1

Nosocomial outbreak of Candida parapsilosis fungemia related to intravenous infusions.

Candida parapsilosis is rarely isolated from blood cultures. Our hospital surveillance detected an increased rate of isolation of C parapsilosis during a four month period. Fourteen postoperative patients receiving intravenous (IV) hyperalimentation and eight burn patients receiving IV albumin were involved. Hectic fever, the major clinical manifestation, was seen in 61% of cases. Therapy in the postoperative patients consisted merely of discontinuing IV catheters and hyperalimentation, while amphotericin B was needed in five of eight burn patients to control persistent fungemia. Epidemiologic

Characteristics of Extracellular Vesicles Released by the Pathogenic Yeast-Like Fungi Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis.

Candida spp. yeast-like fungi are opportunistic pathogens in humans and have been recently found to release extracellular vesicles (EVs) that are involved in many vital biological processes in fungal cells. These include communication between microorganisms and host-pathogen interactions during infection. The production of EVs and their content have been significantly characterized in the most common candidal species Candida albicans, including the identification of numerous virulence factors and cytoplasmic proteins in the EV cargo. We have here conducted the isolation and proteomic character
