Oral candidiasis in Chikungunya viral fever: a case report.

A 32 year old Indian male patient presented with chief complaints of a high fever, erythema on ear, severe polyarthritic joint pains & swelling, non pitting pedal oedema, facial puffiness and itching for past four days. He had no significant past medical and drug history and was serologically confirmed to have Chikungunya. Oral cavity inspection revealed whitish non erythematous pseudo membranous plaques on the hard palate, buccal surface of cheek and the floor of the mouth which was later microbiologically confirmed as Candidiasis. He tested negative for HIV and had leucopenia with severe CD4

A novel murine model of oral candidiasis with local symptoms characteristic of oral thrush.

A conventional and easy method to establish a murine oral candidiasis model, which has not only a stable yeast population in the oral cavity but also symptoms characteristic of oral thrush, was developed by using a sedative agent. Mice were immunosuppressed with prednisolone and were given tetracycline hydrochloride. They were orally infected with 10(6) viable cells of Candida albicans by means of a cotton swab and enough chlorpromazine chloride had been injected to keep them in a sedative state about for 3 hr after inoculation. From day 3 to day 7 post inoculation, 10(5)-10(6) colony forming

Comparative evaluation of fluconazole and clotrimazole in treatment of oral candidiasis.

CONTEXT: Oral candidiasis is the most common opportunistic infection affecting the oral mucosa. Most commonly, the lesions are caused by Candida albicans and other organisms isolated are Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis and Candida dubliniensis. As an opportunistic infection, it is seen affecting the young, old and debilitating people. This infection is seen to be enervative, exhausting and crippling; a few routinely employed antifungal agents are used in our study. AIMS: We aimed to compare the clinical and mycological effectiveness of topical fluconazole and clotrimazo

Effect of prolonged HAART on oral colonization with Candida and candidiasis.

BACKGROUND: Progressive cell-mediated immunodeficiency with decrease of CD4+ lymphocyte count to less than or equal to 200 cells/mm3 is a major risk factor for colonization with Candida species and development of candidiasis. Oropharyngeal candidiasis may occur in up to 90% of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients during the course of the disease. This study is to determine the effect of prolonged highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on oropharyngeal colonization with Candida species and oral candidiasis. METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal follow-up study in HIV-infec

Predictive value of oral candidiasis as a marker of progression to AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of oral candidiasis (OC) as a clinical marker of progression in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. STUDY DESIGN: In 1992, an oral examination was carried out on a group of 200 HIV-infected patients with a mean age of 36.8 +/- 7 years (range 25-46 years) to establish the diagnosis of OC. The following variables were recorded: age, sex, duration of the disease, risk behaviour, CD4 lymphocyte count, clinical stage and antiretroviral treatment. Of the 200 patients in the group evaluated, 157 did not fulfil the criteria for AIDS at the time o

Functions of oral candidiasis episodes that are highly prognostic for AIDS.

Although oral candidiasis lesions are widely recognized as markers for AIDS, the relative prognostic significance of functions of these episodes has not been examined. We compare the associations with time to AIDS of one fixed and six time-dependent metrics of oral candidiasis lesions, including proximity of a lesion to seroconversion, any candidiasis history, and recency of a lesion. We show in Cox regression models that two metrics are clinically and statistically far more significant than the others, alone or in combination: any history of candidiasis since HIV seroconversion, and recency o

The roles of salivary secretory IgA on the development of oral candidiasis.

Oral candidiasis, an opportunistic fungal infection mainly caused by Candida albicans, is highly prevalent in immunocompromised individuals. Saliva acts as the oral cavity's first line of defense, with secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) as its key specific immune component. In this review, we systematically clarify sIgA's multifaceted roles in oral immunity and its significance in the pathogenesis, progression, and management of oral candidiasis. We detail sIgA's biological characteristics (synthesis, secretion) and core mechanisms: immune exclusion (inhibiting fungal adhesion/invasion), virule

Clinical and Microbiological Profile of Oral Candidiasis: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Oral candidiasis is a common opportunistic fungal infection of the oral mucosa, most frequently caused by Candida albicans. Its development is influenced by local factors, such as denture use and oral hygiene, as well as systemic conditions including diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, and chronic inflammatory diseases. Accurate diagnosis requires both clinical evaluation and mycological testing. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze demographic characteristics, predisposing factors, and the species distribution of Candida isolates in patients diagnosed with oral can

Mechanisms of action of Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of oral candidiasis.

Candida albicans is often associated with oral candidiasis, and drug-resistance profiles have contributed to an increase in morbidity and mortality. It is known that Lactobacillus spp. acts by competing for adhesion to the epithelium, absorption of nutrients and modulation of the human microbiota. Therefore, they are important to assist in the host's microbiological balance and reduce the growth of Candida spp. Until now, there have been no reports in the literature of reviews correlating to the use of Lactobacillus spp. in the treatment of oral candidiasis. Thus, this review aims to highlight

Oral Candidiasis in Adult and Pediatric Patients with COVID-19.

Oral Candidiasis (OC) is an opportunistic fungal infection of the oral cavity, frequently reported under local and systemic predisposing circumstances. While the recurrence of OC HIV-infected subjects has been well described and reported, the association between oral candidiasis and the SARS-CoV-2 infection is a recent finding that still is worthy of further study. The present paper focuses on this novel association, reporting the incidence and prevalence of OC occurring during and after COVID-19 and the possible etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying the onset of OC in COVID-19 subjects. The wo

Ellagic Acid-Cyclodextrin Complexes for the Treatment of Oral Candidiasis.

The increase in the prevalence of fungal infections worldwide and the rise in the occurrence of antifungal resistance suggest that new research to discover antifungal molecules is needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of ellagic acid-cyclodextrin complexes (EA/HP-β-CD) for the treatment of oral candidiasis. First, the effect of EA/HP-β-CD on C. albicans planktonic cells and biofilms was evaluated. Then, the cytotoxicity of the effective concentration was studied to ensure safety of in vivo testing. Finally, the in vivo effectiveness was determined by using a murine mo
